so optimism can be misprescribed/abused...

it can also be the key to survival... a positive delusion.

Ever read Viktor Frankl's "Man Search for Meaning?"

What is that "optimism"?
I am not really sure .....

I see delusional optimism and the ability to find purpose in dire situations fairly different.

yeah, but I don't really know why I ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD

i think that this is becoming a discussion in semantics. And perhaps I was the one who took it in that direction.

Survival without a meaning is nothing.
BTW - after you posted I got the book. A great one IMO.
Thank you

I've never tried to be an optimist, or a pessimist. I've always tried to be a realist.

Sometimes things are going to suck. Sometimes they're going to be great. It makes most sense to analyze what the situation IS and not want I want it to be (optimist) or fear the worst case scenario (pessimist).

Simple, but has worked for me.

This speech was mostly bad because of its attack on positive thinking. She often tries to create false dichotomies to win her arguments.

Either positive thinking can change your entire world or it can't. It obviously can't. Poor people are poor just because they have bad attitude. They obviously aren't. We can attract wealth with only our thoughts. Obviously not.

The clowns seemed to fit appropriately, the video was silly.

Positive thinking isn't magic but it does change things. Have you ever walked into a store and spoke with a positive employee? A person who was happy to be there, did their work with all their heart, and showed respect and courtesy. You are impressed when leaving a place like this. Compare that with your last trip to the DMV or Post Office, which may have had an employee who didn't care if you were there and didn't care about being of service. We complain about these visits.

Attitude is a game changer. No it won't make you rich, but if you have the skills for a good job with an excellent attitute, you will be promoted in front of the guy with the so so attitude. It's funny she discredited corporations with "positive attitudes" and then somehow linked the word corporation with the entire financial collapse. Last time I checked, corporations could be companies like Google, IBM, and Bershire Hathaway. Do you know how much money these companies have made for their investors? Do you know how much value they have brought to the marketplace? America is a thriving nation because we gave capitalism a shot and created this marketplace. Demonizing an entire type of business based upon the greed of a few select indiviudals is no different than demonizing all physicians because of a few negligent malpractice errors.

One thing I've found throughout life, is the less choice the consumer has, the poorer the attitudes in that field. In some medical and government positions, I've seen this entitlement attitude more prevalent than in the corporate world.

Attitude is not magic but it does make a huge difference in our lives. And having a good attitude is certainly better than a poor one.
