Hello there people.🙂 I am wondering. I have heard that a grad from ROSS or ST.Georges, to find a residency in, lets say, ER or Radiology, or Anesthesia, etc… , any of the “good” residencies, is basically to far off for them to reach. I have heard that you need to be top 96th percentile in step 1 to even be considered. Please tell me this is not so, especially in ER. What do you guys think which residency is the hardest to get into and if not hard to get into, what scores would I need to get for the mentioned residencies?Thanks for the info.

as a caribbean grad, you need to have a competitive application to get ER, but you do NOT need a 96th percentile on step 1. anesthesiology is easier to get than ER, due to the sheer number of anesthesiology residency positions; plus there are many scramble positions in anesthesiology each year. Radiology is very difficult to get for a caribbean grad, even with a 96th percentile on step 1 and 2. connections are extremely important for a caribbean grad to get radiology.

Well (MYTH!!!!) No you do not need 96th percentile, in fact I found out that ER can be a FP specialty LOL, so FP is one of the easiest to get into right now.

You do need good scores but so high, it is harder to match in those residencies so you may have to match at a less sought after Hospital but really it's not too bad, Heck a grad in 06 matched at Cook County Hosp Ill. from my school, and one in Radiology so anything is possible (SJSM).

In the latest match about 50% of applying IMGs matched into EM residencies. 80% of the total spots were filled by US seniors. So what this says is that it is certainly harder to match in EM if you are an IMG but not impossible. You have to do quite well on your boards (but certainly not 96th percentaile) and excel in coursework and on your rotations. Regardless of the field you want to pursue it takes an organized solid effort to obtain a desired residency. Do your research, seek good advice and work hard and you should succeed. Best of luck.
