I applied last summer and am still waiting for interviews, but have received none. I got secondaries for everything but got rejected by pretty much everything also except for a few schools that are taking forever. I've pretty much given up hope for this year, so I've applied to some SMP programs (georgetown and loyola). I'm sure some people are also in my situation, so for reapplicants, should they just start a new amcas app for 2010 while waiting on everything for the previous year to come in and the SMP letters?

my stats are in profile. thanks in advance for any input

I've heard that some schools like seeing someone try again (shows dedication for medicine) so even if not that much about you has changed it might be worth trying again at the schools you think you have the best shot at getting into.

Did you apply to alot of schools that you think you have a reasonable shot at? (ie not stanford/harvard/duke/yale/hopkins/etc?)

Did you try places like Tulane, North Dakota, Marshall, Michigan State?

i usually worry about people who apply in successive cycles (unless your flaw was applying late) because it doesn't give you a chance to really improve your application. you essentially end up applying with the same app.

your gpa is quite low and that's what did you in. do yourself a favor and bring it up before you spend money on another app cycle.

Unless you are going to add DO medical schools to the mix or get a much higher MCAT score, I see no point in reapplying with the same application. If you are committed to MD schools only, I think completing a year of an SMP is the way to go before you reapply. Every secondary application I completed asked, "How have you improved your application since you last applied?" Be sure you have an excellent answer to that question that goes beyond improving your stats.

OP, your MCAT score is fine (no need to retake) if you are just looking to get into any medical school and not vying for top-tier schools. Even if you retake the MCAT and score a 35+, schools will still think twice before giving you a interview bc of your below avg GPA. Your cGPA and sGPA is what's really hurting your application. Your best bet is to take at least a year off to boost your application with more clinical experience, research, and ECs but I don't recommend the SMP program for 2 reasons - one is that it is very expensive, and two, some SMP programs put you in science classes alongside with med students to see if you can handle the work, and if you can't, it will make your app look bad. Another alternative is to consider getting a masters degree on whatever major you studied in during undergrad years. Good luck.
