Does anyone know if you have to be registered for the DO match in order to scrammble later into a DO rotating intern year? I am told the DO match comes out on Feb. 12 but they do not hold their scramble until after the MD match, March 12. So I was looking at possibly needing to scrammble for a DO Rotating year but was not going to register with the match because I may not need to, but will not know until after the MD match. If this is confusing sorry but sometimes I think everything about the Osteopathic world is confusing, just makes us sharper I guess.

Iso, I think I was in the same situation you are in. I "scrambled for my osteopathic internship" because I wanted to keep my options open for my allopathic anesthesia residency. If you want more info, send me a private message

What do you guys mean by "scramble for osteopathic internship"?

Hmmm, good question... I am pretty sure the actual scrambling begins immediately with the results for the AOA match; however, you raise an interesting question... in the event a program doesn't fill in the next month until after the NRMP match, it would theoretically be possible to obtain a position... BUT you run a big risk of not having many to choose from. BUT you do need to be registered for the AOA match at least, otherwise programs won't have your info for the scramble (ie. you won't appear on the list of "unmatched candidates." I think the deadline for registration is passed though?

Right...we become masters of vague exam questions and highly complex ranking schemes.

🙄

Surely these skills will make us better docs...

I know for a fact that they wait until after the MD match, had a freind that scrammbled into DO position after not matching MD and they opened their (the DO scrammble) same time as MD scrammble. They play the game too and know a ton of people are waiting for the MD match and they would rather see what they can scramble for when all applicants know if they available.

anyone heard of/planning on ranking a program you didn't apply to/interview at for the osteopathic match, simply so you end up in the "unmatched candidates list" and also receive the list of unfilled programs? would be much nicer to just certify a blank rank list, but the system won't let you do that.

i'm thinking of doing this... will it help me scramble to classified as an unmatched candidate (e.g, won't have to send CV/letters/scores/etc. via fax or snail mail), or can anyone think of any negatives?

Seems like a reasonable strategy to me. cant see any negatives except paying the fee to register. Im going to rank one program i never applied to. Would love to hear others feedback as well.

This is incorrect. The DO Scramble begins at 12 noon EST on February 12, 2007 (AOA Match Day).

Re: Ranking programs you haven't interviewed at/applied to: I *think* you can only rank programs at which you've interviewed. Try it out though- rank lists are due this Friday for osteopaths, so you may want to hurry just in case you need a plan "B".

A plan "B", by the way, would be to become friends with someone participating in the AOA Match. I *think* even matched applicants would have access to the open positions.

Thank you for clearing this up!!

Not true, can rank any program regardless of whether you applied or interviewed.

Excellent...so the only negative to this plan is if it is in violation of the Applicant Registration/Match Agreement that you sign. The "small print" tends to bite.

i read the agreement very thoroughly - didn't see anything about this strategy being a violation of the match agreement. nothing is mentioned about only being able to rank programs that you interviewed at.

anyone else have any thoughts?

Sorry to drag this on, but I wasn't able to access the AOA Match Agreement last night.

I did this morning, and actually, the agreement that you sign when you register for the AOA Match explicitly prohibits this plan of action.

Check out page 4 of the Match agreement, item 4:
"If I accept a position at a program that is not participating in the Match, or decide not to participate in the Match for any other reason, then I will submit a withdrawl from the Match and will NOT submit a Rank Order List of choice(s) for the Match."

So, proceed with caution- good luck.

thing is, i wouldn't call that so explicit. would you, really? i AM participating in the match, so how could I be deciding NOT to participate in the match (simultaneously)?

the whole problem with this is that it IS a gray area - if it was black or white, i wouldn't be having an issue. it is sure getting close to the deadline, but any more thoughts? there HAS to be a bunch of people reading this that are going through the same thing.

Yes, I really would call it explicit.

If you're ranking programs that you haven't applied to/interviewed at, you know you won't match. You're making a choice not to participate in the match.

Particularly because, on the same page of the match agreement, it is articulated that the Rank Order List should reflect your preference of programs to which you've applied (as opposed to programs to which you haven't applied).

If you're purposefully throwing your match results to not match, you are considered a non-participant. Of course, people can rationalize ultimately doing what they want to do, but there's no wiggle room on this plan in the match agreement.
