Until last night, I was unaware of the curious case of one McArthur Wheeler, the man who inspired Dunning and Kruger to conduct the research that is now so near and dear to our hearts. Wikipedia, Google, and good old-fashioned curiosity are a potent combination, though, and my reading last night was most befuddling and delightful. If you don't know the story, you can read it here:

I reckon this is strongly correlated to imposter syndrome in medical school?

The DK effect is sort of the opposite of imposter syndrome. Going to the opposite side of mount stupid into the valley of self doubt is similar to imposter syndrome, but IS is the fear that you are a fraud and don’t actually belong or deserve an accomplishment.

So in med school, someone with IS would be convinced they don’t belong in med school and that it’s just a matter of time before everyone else realizes it. That valley on the DK curve is when you do have some knowledge of a subject but grossly underestimate your own competence.

So they can go hand in hand, but they aren’t quite the same thing.

And people who have no realistic ideas on why they’ve not been admitted, not matched, been dismissed from their school/residency program/job and therefore think it must be nefarious forces out to harm them for illegitimate malicious reasons.

It’s very true!

American physicians blow through more cash than any other nation for outcomes that pale in comparison to an embarrassing number of health systems, and DK is largely to blame!

I blame the gov'ment!

It’s related to midlevels and paragods thinking they know everything when they don’t.

Can't resist:
