After reading over the threads on how psych courses will be classified, there seems to be some consensus on a few courses and then disagreement on others. Because I am using this information to determine my course schedule for next year, I am hoping to get a reasonably accurate sense of what people have experienced regarding a few courses I am considering taking next year (and a few I have already taken to see how many more courses I might need to take to boost my science GPA). It seems to me that there are a few courses that some people have success and others don't when trying to include them in their science gpa (the same course- I am not sure why there would be this variance?).
I called AMCAS to ask whether or not specific courses would count (if they are not explicitly listed on their main list) and they said that they will refer to the course bulletin when making the final decision-but I don't want to take the chance of taking ones that wont count! . Although I'd like to feel completely confident in my assessment, because I want to make the best use of my time next year, I want to double check, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!
1) 3120 Brain and Behavior. Cr. 3
Prereq: PSY 1010 or 1020. No credit after PSY 5050. Introduction to the brain and its influence over behavior. Structure and function of the nervous system, neural communication, and neural mechanisms of higher nervous system functions and dysfunctions. Topics include: biological basis of sleep, sex, learning, memory, language, schizophrenia, and depression. (T)
- my suspicions are yes for this one.
2)
3310 Abnormal Psychology. Cr. 4
Prereq: PSY 1010 or 1020. Nature and causes of various forms of abnormal behavior, including schizophrenia, depression, and neurosis, viewed from psychological, biological, cultural, developmental and historical perspectives. Diagnosis and treatment of pathological behavior. (T)
- I initially didn't think this would count, but a few people said it did for them? Any one else have experiences regarding this course?
3) 4020 Research in Psychology. Cr. 3
Prereq: PSY 1010 or 1020. Primarily for students interested in future graduate studies in planning and evaluation of psychological research. Critical evaluation of scientific literature and the planning and development of psychological research proposals. The range of research methods and areas in psychology. (Y)
I have no idea for this one.
4) 5050 Physiological Psychology. Cr. 3
Prereq: PSY 1010 or 1020. Physiological mechanisms underlying behavior and mental processes: sensory-motor mechanisms; integrative action of the nervous system; neuro-physiological mechanisms involved in emotional behavior, learning and memory; influences of hormones on behavior. (F,W)
I think this one is a yes
5) 3010 Statistical Methods in Psychology. Cr. 4 Prereq: PSY 1010 or 1020 or consent of instructor for non-psychology majors. Primarily for psychology majors. Principles and computational methods that apply to quantitative aspects of psychological procedure; elementary correlation theory and prediction, sampling problems, tests of hypotheses, elementary test theory, interpretation of results. (T)
- have everyone's psychology stats courses been counted, or is there a specific criteria that they need to meet- ie, they cover a certain number of math based stats concepts?
- I think this one is yes.
6) 3060 Psychology of Learning and Memory: Fundamental
Processes. Cr. 3
Prereq: PSY 1010 or equiv. Fundamental theories, concepts, and empirical findings in field of learning. (Y)
3070 Laboratory in Learning and Memory. Cr. 2
Prereq: PSY 1010 and 3010; prereq. or coreq: 3060. Laboratory investigations of basic learning processes, including sensory and motor learning and complex learning processes. This course will satisfy the Writing Intensive (WI) requirement when elected with coreq. PSY 5993. Material Fee as indicated in the Schedule of Classes (Y)
----------- this is one course (course plus lab)
7) 3080 Cognitive Psychology: Fundamental Processes.
(LIN 3080) Cr. 3
Prereq: PSY 1010 or equiv. Fundamental theories, concepts, and empirical findings in study of human cognition. Topics include: thinking, problem solving, language comprehension and production, memory and attention. (Y)
3090 Laboratory in Cognitive Psychology. Cr. 2
Prereq: PSY 1010 and 3010; prereq. or coreq: 3080. Laboratory investigations of cognitive processes, including attention, memory, language processing and problem solving. This course will satisfy the Writing Intensive (WI) requirement when elected with coreq. PSY 5993. Material Fee as indicated in the Schedule of Classes (Y)
------this is one course (course plus lab)
8) ALSO this is a biomedical engineering course- Although it looks like AMCAS doesn't usually count BME courses towards the science gpa, if the basis of this course is to get biomed engineering students informed on basic cell bio and physiology before moving on in the program and therefore all the material is the fundamentals of bio and not bioengineering per se, would this most likely count?
5005 Introduction to Cell Biology and Physiology for Engineers. Cr. 2= this is a BME course offered in the biomed engineering dept
Undergrad. prereq: senior standing. For any class designated as Web, contact online: (http://www.classschedule.wayne.edu). Basic understanding of fundamental human physiology for engineering students; emphasis on body function.
9) all all astronomy courses counted? I know it says astronomy, but this course seems to be more relaxed because its "descriptive astrononmy."
AST 2010 (PS) Descriptive Astronomy
Course Description: Lecture course that introduces the concepts and methods of modern astronomy, the solar system, stars, galaxies, and cosmology; recent discoveries about planets, moons, the sun, pulsars, quasars, and black holes.
Also, for the courses on this list that can reasonably be assumed to count towards my science gpa, would I be able to get a letter of rec from these profs (I have received conflicting feedback on this?!
10) Lastly, if I am doing a directed study and the topic is science related, ie. my project is based on clinical neuroscience research, would it count towards my sciene gpa? - it is offered as PSY 4990. - Would I have to provide a description of the project because a generic course description does not exist?
Thanks 🙂
