Do you think that an hour in the gym 3-4 times week is just as beneficial as spending those 3-4 hours in a book? In undergrad the more time I spent in the gym the less time I had to spend studying. Now that I have avoided the gym (not by choice) to study it seems that my memory is begining to suffer. What do you think? 😕

I think I haven't seen a spleen that big since breakfast

I heard of a study one time that showed an increase in memory and intelligence in people who exercised regularly. Besides that it helps you to relax and clear your head. Sometimes having an hour to clear your head can be worth 2 hours of studying. Also you really want to stay well rounded or you will be miserable when you get to med school. Is getting good grades really worth being unhealthy.

For a second that spleen looked like my dead brother.

I'm in med school that is why I have not had time to work out.

Nah, being in med school is not an excuse to not work out. I'm a med2 and I worked out an average of 3 times a week for one hour all of med1 and this year I'm managing 2 or 3 times per week. Most of my classmates also find some time to exercise either through intramural sports or running or going to a gym. The only people who failed or are repeating a year were not people who worked out a lot...or they are the people who became pregnant and had a baby so obvioulsy we all managed to get passing grades and continue exercising.

I work out in the gym 1hr, six days a week, and run in the ams before rotations (was classes) for 30min-1hr 4-5 days a week. I was able to do this and still maintain decent grades. In fact, I found those days when I took a day off, I was off, couldnt function well and couldnt study well. Sure I wasnt able to maintain a bodybuilding competition diet (those last 2 weeks make you a true meat head) ,but I maintained my BF% between 8-11%( ok I may have hit close to 13 during the holidays)
Its easy. Dont give me the "Im in med school" crap. Do you think it gets any easier during a residency? How about as an attending? Factor in spouse/kids, etc?
If you cant do it now....YOULL NEVER DO IT.

Agreed. I'm a med student with spouse/kids. Still work out and play b-ball every week.... even during block weeks.....ESPECIALLY DURING BLOCK WEEKS!!! I am twice as effective when exercised and well rested. Lack of physical activity can also lead to depression which will certianly do nothing good for your grades.

go to the gym!!!! i've found that the more i exercise, the better i study, the better i sleep, and i'm just generally a better person to be around. i've made it a point to go to the gym at least 3 times a week this year (even if it is only for 30-45 mins) and my grades have improved so much over first year. there's more to studying than just spending time with your head in a book; if you're so distracted/spaced out/stressed that you can't remember what you just read then you're just wasting time. i went crazy last year when it seemed like all i did was study; this year i'm exercising, i'm cooking (i love to cook...and my friends love to eat so it works out), and i'm hanging out with my friends and my dog more. i'm happier, and i'm studying better instead of longer.

go to the gym. you'll feel better. if you're having "i'm not studying" guilt, then take some notecards with you, but whatever you do just get off your butt for an hour and go to the gym! the books will be waiting for you when you get back. 😉
