I'm beginning to seriously hate biochemistry 😡

Okay, I don't mind memorizing pathways.. I don't mind them at all in fact. But when we start getting tested on what the docking amino acid is on PLP or how many amino acids X shares with Y.. I feel the urge to kill someone.

Word. Anatomy was really so much better than this. My school does this weird thing with biochem too...metabolic pathways are later in the curriculum, but now we're studying the insane protein crap along with histology in an integrated "cell and tissue physiology" course. And we have an exam Tuesday morning...

well i'm no fan of biochem, probably my least favorite M1 class (although histo gives it a run for its money), but I think the clotting cascade is one of the more useful things you can learn in biochem...

I LOVED BIOCHEM!I MEAN ALL THE INTRICATE CODES OF PROTEINS AND THE WAY THEY FOLD.EVEN IF THIS HAS NO MEANING AT ALL OR NO CLINICAL IMPORTANCE.WHAT OF KREBS CYCLE?ARENT U AMAZED THAT IT PRODUCES 38 ATP!38 ATP AND NO LESS!WHAT IF ONE WERE LESS OR ONE WERE MORE?IT WOULD STOP THESE BIOCHEMISTS IN THEIR TRACK!ANYONE GAVE A THOUGHT TO THAT?

I think the clotting cascade is actually pretty important in medicine in general. Well I was a biochem major so i'm not complaining...

You know it's important when more than one class touches on the subject (path, pharm, etc). What's sad is that, other than coag cascades and the pathways related to certain common biochemical diseases, most of biochem is never seen or heard from again. Kind of like 95% of neuroscience.

also we've been told several times that half (or more) of what we learn in biochem will be flat out wrong in 10 years. yay!

once again, not a biochem fan, but if i'm not mistaken the Krebs cycle doesn't produce 38 ATP and no less. It produces reduced coenzymes which help produce the proton gradient that drives the production of ATP, and it produces on average 2.5 ATP per NADH and 1.5 per FADH2. So the number of ATP produced by the cycle does vary slightly. Also, I thought it was ~30 ATP/glucose in oxidative phosphorylation, including the ATP and NADH produced in glycolysis, so the ATP produced by the Krebs cycle alone would be less than that.... Sorry, I want to bash biochem too, i just want our jokes to be biochemically sound...

Just wondering, why does the brain do alpha-oxydation. There's no production of ATP through this, so what's the use?

The thing that depresses me is that it's probably one of the most relevant courses we'll take. I mean, I know they're all relevant, blah de blah blah, but from what I gather it's really necessary to understand the likes of Pharmacology, etc. later on.

It wouldn't be that bad, but when they pump out questions asking exactly how many NAD's or whatever are used at X spot or what amino acid is used with Y coenzyme, you wanna hurt someone. Hurt them bad.

I just hate the fact that biochem is its own course. It's so much easier to remember with pharm and path because they highlight why biochem principles are important but just memorizing a million different pathways without all the clinical implications was pretty useless.

How could you hate Biochem.. its easier than ochem and starts to incorporate elements of basic biology. Its a straight step down in difficulty from orgo.

Let me clarify. Some biochemistry elements are actually relevant like intracellular signaling/etc. but that gets taught it so many places that I wouldn't necessarily call it Biochemistry. When I think Biochemistry, I think more of the pathways and memorization of concepts like protein folding and some chemistry stuff that I was really good at in high school and college that I haven't use in forever.
