My pharm teachers suck, and so do their lectures, and their lecture notes, which include a full one page description for each drug's adverse effects!!!!!!!


Oh wait, I don't have to memorize those little tidbits, I should only focus on the "major concepts" 🙄

I soooooo feel your pain. Why can't they make drugs with interesting names at least?

I think I'm gonna make a song like McDonalds. Instead of "lettuce, pickle, onion, blah blah blah on a sesame seed bun", it'll sing "haldol, risperdol on a schizo for fun."

I totally feel your pain. Pharm is pretty tough.

Here's some things I did to get me though...

1. Make Charts!!! Tons and Tons of charts of all the drugs within the same class so you can compare the pharmicokinetics/ indications/contraindications/toxicodynamics/and routes of admin...It's much easier to study if all the related drugs are on the same piece of paper so you can compare and contrast them.

2. Memorize by EXCEPTION! The majority of drugs within the same class all have the same overall profile with a few differences. These differences are important.

3. Read Micro made Ridiculously Simple for your Anti-biotics/anti-malarial/anti-fungal, etc. drugs. This book is SO helpful! It gives get stories and ways to remember the different names of the drugs.

4. I thought Lippincott was helpful with giving an overview of what each class of drugs did and their effects/indications/etc. Get a picture of the general class before you start learning the individual drugs. If you have questions after the general reading of Lippincott, try Goodman and Gillman next. This is like the Bible of Pharm. It gives you everything you need to know - helpful for little details you want to grasp but don't use this to study from - you'll be too overwhelmed!

Board review books also break things down nicely.

Seems like rote memorization using flash cards might work for me. Very very time consuming, but like all of my comrades in pain, I just don't know what else to do!

Pharm Recall helped me a lot, especially for boards.

But can I join the "I Hate Pharm" club? The subject made my life miserable for two years, because I just couldn't get myself to study it.

That's my problem too. I just can't study it. I always put it off until last because all of the other lectures count for just as much and are easier to cram.

I hate pharm because I can't cram it. It's like trying to cram for a Chinese essay test when you don't speak Chinese.

Anyway, welcome to the club! I'm not only the president, I'm also a client! 🙂

Charts for pharm work well. ALso,try to learn pharm from a clinical perspective. Whenver you see a case presentation with a pt taking medicines, think about the mech/common side effects of each medicine and how it could be effecting the pt. Also, when you study diseases, think about the drugsthat youwould be using to suppress/treat symptoms. Remember, you should be treating symptoms,not the whole person. 😉
