I wish I could have a total do-over of this semester. My grades suck. 🙁 It's looking like straight Bs, and with my GPA as low as it is already, that's not going to help out my case and it's going to ruin the awesome upward trend I've had.

I wish the schools I've interviewed at would get back to me already. Blaaaaah.

I wish finals week didn't exist.

I wish for lots and lots of extra time this Christmas break to catch up on all of my lost sleep.

...and I wish for mint chocolate-chip ice cream. I don't care if it makes me sick, damn it, it sounds amazing right now. :hungry:
 
I wish my 2 finals today would just take themselves so I could go back to sleep. 😴
 
I wish i could go to sleep and wake-up be a vet already.

I wish I could just sleep more than 5 hours every night.

I wish college was like kindergarten where naps were a part of your every day schedule.

I wish.... sleep, I just want sleep damn it.

Besides, you guys get weird parasites down there. I don't have the faintest clue how to treat that stuff. Can I just require all your owners to do lime-sulphur dips before bringing their pets in?

no. there are much better treatments than lime-sulphur and your nose will thank you for it. You could cushion it with vacation on either side? I will pay for you and your wife to go to a theme park?

Hm. Three days at a theme park, no appointments for fleas, and no griping about my use of hydromorph for surgery patients and we might be able to work something out. 🙂

Kind of a downer but.....I wish I had taken more time off and and more vacation in vet school and residency. Part of me even wishes I had taken a gap year somewhere (hypocrite that I am, I actually encourage all of my undergrads to take a gap year and go work or something, get away from school). I'm starting to get really tired and I think it is showing in my research and teaching.

It's so hard to stay enthusiastic when you're exhausted from going a million miles an hour for the last decade or so. I went straight through - 4 years college, 4 years vet school, 3 years residency, and am halfway through a 4-year PhD with no break. I worked or interned every single summer and winter break during school, worked part-time jobs all through school itself as well. I have had only two vacations (vacations as in taking a break for myself....not counting seeing family over the holidays, because lord knows that is no vacation) over the past 10 or so years. That's seriously no bueno and I'm starting to realize it.

It's all well and good when you're in the throes of school and trying to be amazing at everything.....but eventually you realize there are things that you have missed out on. The gung-ho attitude can and will hurt you in the end if you don't take breaks. When people ask me what my hobbies are, I quite literally have no answer other than video games and it's honestly a little embarrassing. Before this thing is done I really need to take some time to myself.

Are you going to/can you take time off after you finish your PhD?

I'll graduate with two degrees in May, after 5 years of undergrad. I want to get into vet school this year, of course, but if I don't . . . I'm realizing that a year off doesn't sound so bad. Actually, it sounds pretty good. I just don't want to go through the stress of the application process again.

I'm sorry WTF 🙁 but I'm glad you posted this. I have a hard time taking breaks because I feel like I should be doing something. I'm a busy body, I've always been doing internships or working or volunteering every break since high school. I have a month long break this Christmas and I've been desperately searching for an emergency vet to shadow because I feel like I should be doing more than relaxing. I really need to take the time while I can because I know I'm just going to get busier from here, but at the same time, I enjoy being in the field and learning more than doing other things because I don't really have any hobbies (unless working counts as a hobby). It's something I need to work on!

My friend (whom I envy) takes a trip once a year where she goes somewhere she's never been. She's in Ireland right now. Maybe that's something that might help? Give you something to look forward too? I know it's hard because traveling is expensive. And it's hard to find the time. When I have more $$$ this is something I'm going to force myself to do every year! I'm starting this summer with a backpacking trip through Europe. But after that I don't know when I'll find the time...

I have a few questions:
1) What the hell is this vacation thing you are talking about? I think I remember something about that from childhood. Something about sun and laying down instead of falling over...
2) Wait, you're supposed to do hobbies in your spare time? I thought hobbies were something you did when you were too wired or tired for sleep?

Seriously, DO IT! I have no idea when I'll ever get a vacation, but from what I've seen of others, it is my fondest wish...

I basically took this past summer off (my last summer break of vet school) on the advice of a few equine vets I worked for the year before. I spend the first month preparing for my wedding, got married, and spent the rest of the summer working on my house and yard, enjoying married life and playing with the dogs. I had some guilt and doubts here and there that I should have been doing more but I don't regret it. Who knows when I'll get a chance like that again.

I'm going to try to have at least a month or so in between finishing research and starting a new proper "big-girl" job (of course this all depend on job availability, so it may be more than a month, heh).

The only other time I had significant time off was 1) free block during 4th year and 2) between graduating vet school in mid-May and starting residency on July 1. I took a small vacation both times (places within driving distance), but for the latter period I spent most of it getting ready to move 1200 miles away from the only place I had ever lived with multiple animals in tow 😱 Now that I've done it once, though it won't be so bad second time around if I have to move. Although people know me and like me where I am right now, so if a position opens here I might consider that pretty heavily.
 
I think that I might join LIS in wishing for some time with no kids. I love them, but man do I miss doing what I wanted to do all the time.

And I wish my job would give me more opportunities for overtime. That time and a half pay is too great to pass up!
 
Vet school is GREAT for vacations, actually.

I worked for 15? 17? years in a regular job before that. I got vacation every year, sure, but NOTHING like vet school where you can (ok, year-round schools aside) get entire summers off..... a few weeks at xmas..... spring break.....

Vet school was awesome for me in that regard. Tons of family time as long as school wasn't in session.
 
obligatory I wish I had working joints or at least ones that didn't screw up as easily. I also wish that putting all my weight on my wrist when catching myself wouldn't result in the "Oh crap did I break it?" thought process.

Real wishes: vacation time not related to surgery or CE. that the business would consistently be profitable. That my husband would find a job that is closer or makes him happier.

Omg I laughed so loudly at this because this is exactly when I do my "hobbies" hahah too wired to sleep or because I decide I need a break from studying even though its the day before an exam :brb:

I wish ! But when I dream about school information it all gets jumbled up and when I wake up it almost feels like instead of sleeping I was just studying totally incorrect material hahah
