The Jobs List

Add to this the fact that subspecialists are fleeing that place like rats from a sinking ship (I have 3 IM sub friends who have left there in the past 2 years and one surgical subspecialty friend who gave a verbal OK and then backed out when the contract came) and you've also got limited sub-specialty backup.

Hi- I’m a long time lurker, (very) occasional poster. I’m about a year out of residency at my first attending job now - I’m looking for a change. Does anyone have leads in the Austin, Tx area? (I’ve heard its a tougher market and I’m having no luck with cold calls and emailing resume). Thanks

Austin is one of those "no jobs" areas, along with Denver, Bozeman, Missoula, Boise, Portland OR, Flagstaff, and Salt Lake. You will have to find a personal connection (maybe via residency?) or move there, offer to moonlight, and take your chances. There's no easy in.

Your pessimism is pervasive but not accurate. I know of new residency grads from a single program who got jobs in all of those cities except Missoula in the last three years. Were there connections? In some cases. But that's how the world works, not just in emergency medicine.

That's my point! There are jobs, but few, and the best way to work it is through connections.

Any thoughts on EM jobs in NYC? Places to avoid? Places to seek out? Any thoughts on Progressive Emergency Physicians/St John's, Flushing, Jamaica, Mount Sinai-BI, Montefiore? Advice? Thoughts?

Have you considered continuing to live in Austin and commuting to work? It's a fairly central location, and if you're willing to drive a few hours to get to work and spend some nights in a hotel the list of opportunities open to you (and your hourly rate) would increase quite a bit

Anyone ever practiced in Vegas? Just wondering what that type of practice environment/job front is like?

As noted in today's thread, 3-3.5 patients per hour. No way.

It seems to me that seeing 3-3.5 patients per hour means they're missing at least 1-1.5 good cases per hour.

anyone have any connections to the Tucson market? Hunting online, it looks like some CMG named Sound staffs one of the major hospitals, anyone have experience with them? PM's welcome/appreciated if you don't want to post publicly...

avoid sound like the plague. Their hospitalist are some of the worst, and give pushback on admissions like no other. I don't imagine their ED staffing to be much better.

Attention residents and medical students. Read that again and realize that you are the only guardian of your career. The beancounters who run your facility (or CMG) will beat you like a galley slave with no regard for your sanity or NPD report so long as the equation that ties accounts receivable, provider compensation, and malpractice payouts is maximized to their benefit.
