I felt this thread needed to be made, because all the other threads concerning SMDEP do not necessarily answer any of the many questions that were stated there. Instead, we have been (I believe) relentlessly PMing our very own SMDEP ambassador (krystalized) with the same tired questions. So I decided to make a thread for past and future SMDEP members.

Future SMDEP members, if you received acceptances/rejections let us know your stats (date applied, GPA, PS, #LORS). The sites you were accepted or rejected from--And if you were accepted which site did you chose to attend and why.

Past SMDEP members, I think everybody is dying to hear a detailed summary of your experience. Where did you go, what did you like, what did you dislike. Was it more like summer camp or academic camp? Thing you wish you had done differently. The stipend amount.

Besides that when you applied, and your stats than would been greatly appreciated.

Those who are not SMDEP members, but feel like your input could be beneficial, the website is below. I would love to hear what you all believe is the best site for a freshmen or sophomore to attend.

Sorry, is there a thread somewhere that lists all the summer programs? I know I saw it somewhere.

I'm applying to SMDEP this year also. From what I understood, you do not have to have your LORs in to get an acceptance/rejection from the sites. I've been having some problems with my school's record department so I've been having to call SMDEP frequently, and they told me that most transcripts do not start coming in until after the MLK Holiday (Jan 21st). So most applications are not completed and ready for the sites to look at until the end of January.

I too was wondering about the rest of your questions.

i'm having trouble with the application. when i finish completing the other demographic information part and i click next it leads to an error page. can anyone help? thanks

grrr so its been nearly 2 weeks since i turned in my application online. 2/3 lors have been sent a week ago and same with transcrptis. their website still says they havent received anything. r they gonna wait for the 3rd lor to come in to update my page???

i wanna know!

Yes, they will wait intill all LORS you signed up for them to receive arrive.

does anyone know why that error webpage occurs after i submit my "other demographic information"? thanks

Good luck to everyone is applying this year!!!! You will definitely have an amazing experience!!!

Rice-Baylor MMEP Summer 2003 Alum (yeah it was a long time ago...when it was still called MMEP...LOL)

Can anyone that went to the program please post their stats?

And ucsd2011, you might be having the same problem I had. I kept getting an error page because I was using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. If you are doing the same thing, try switching and see if that works.

That's the same boat I've been in! I turned my application in on Dec. 17. My transcript was sent out last week. Nothing has changed on my status. But I think part of the problem is the lazy clerks at my school's admissions & records department.

Yes, they will wait intill all LORS you signed up for them to receive arrive.

Do you mean to process the application? I emailed them and they said the sites start processing once they have your transcript. LORs can come later.

I mean if you sent one LOR and have two that will be sent in. That one wont appear intill both are turned in

So finally my status has been changed. for my transcrpits it says reiceved and approaved. for my LOR's it just says recieved for all 3. Whats really funny is i havent even sent the 3rd one in yet.
since my file looks complete is there a good chance my decision will be posted in the next few days?

Well, where did you apply?

uwas, yale, and columbia

Uwas- offered me accepatance quite quickly (day at the most)
Yale- I've heard a week, very quick response as well.
Columbia- less than a week for me.

I hope everything goes well, which one is your top choice. Yale is quite nice!

Anyone know how long it takes Nebraska? I really want to go there...if I get in.

Nebraksa is real sluggish, it seems. But a wonderful program nonetheless.

I guess they're going to use up all 10 business days. Congrads on getting in, techmed!

I don't think its very competitive, though they do lean more towards minorities.

Washington- 1/3/08 *accepted
Columbia- 1/7/08 *accepted
Nebraska- 1/16/08 *accepted

Washington, I decided against, because their focus is on diversity in the health profession, something that is important, but I believe should be addressed differently. Washington, is a program it seems to help students catch up rather than put them ahead. This may be a false assumption. On the plus side this program I believe is the most experienced. And has the highest ranked medical school according to Newsweek.

Nebraska was my first choice, for many reasons (closer to home etc, etc,). Nonetheless, before I made my decision I realized that we would be interacting with the Medical students and in according to Newsweek Nebraska is lower in rank, than most of the schools on the list. However, one must remember to find the program that is right for you, so at times you may have to disregard this kind of information. Nebraska offer the most stipend $1,000 and I believe to compete with the top name schools may have created the best program.

Columbia, why I decided on attending this site is because that offer a academic enrichment in biology (all sites I applied to contain some sort of biology enrichment) something I will be taking the subsequent year. The staff here seems very professional but aloof, they only can be contacted via email, and have no website. So I am going in blind, however krytalized assured me that experience is worthwhile!

[FONT='Calibri','sans-serif']The program overall, has changed a great deal since its conception and I believe has become more competitive in the recent years. One person I know has been rejected from a site due to the classes he/her has not taken. So apply to sites that will help put you ahead, and read the curriculum and make sure the classes offered are not to beyond what you have taken..

i am applying to case, duke and either louisville or nebraska i can't decide, help?

I really like Nebraska just because it seems like it has more clinical opportunities. *fingers crossed* We'll see what happens. They just approved my transcript today. So does that mean that I should know within 10 days?

yea i think so i think i may go ahead and pick nebraska but i heard they take a while to get back to you

and no one has said anything about case?

I got into Houston...anyone know how much their stipend is?

when were u complete direct?

so supposedly uwash is supposed to respond in a day..but its been 2 days now, does this mean they hate me?

I was complete today, and Houston responded today.

They don't hate you, just give them some time. I think some sites use up a good amount of the ten days that they have.

are you guys on semester schedule..cause i'm on quarter and because of that my choices are extremely limited to like only three/four places.

I know a lot of people down cleveland, but case was a good experience. PM me if you have any questions.

Why would it matter if you were on quarter or semester? As long as you have a transcript with your grades...

Congrats on your acceptances! What were you stats (classes you took, gpa, when your LORS and transcript were verified, etc.) if you don't mind me asking?

i think it would matter if you are on a quarter or whole semester because you would only have a limited space of time you could participate in smdep and only be limited to those sites that fit in to that time.

That makes sense, red88.

Anyone know how much Houston's stipend is?! I have to make a decision before the end of the month, but I want to know the info up front. Its annoying that they don't tell you the details until after you say yes. Anyone know?

BTW...techmed, how long did it take Nebraska to respond for you?

Too bad I didn't apply this year. It would've been great to meet some of you guys. Just wondering, what do you guys think are the most competitive sites? And the least? I noticed that TechMed put the Columbia site acceptance rate at 8%--where did you get that piece of info, Tech? I don't want to doom myself next year by applying to only the most competitive sites, lol. 🙂

I know a lot of people down cleveland, but case was a good experience. PM me if you have any questions.

Yes, Case has a top 3 program.

You can check out the typical schedule here

Were I not from Ohio I would have went to their site.

When I called the SMDEP office with some questions about why my transcript wasn't there yet, they said that all of the sites that I was applying to were not even half filled...as in 40 people hadn't applied yet. (This was early this year). I applied to Texas, Nebraska, and Virginia. So they may not be as competitive...

maybe i should try that and i keep going back and forth between louisville and nebraska, how long ago did you call?

what do you guys mean when u say verified?
under my status for transcripts it says...recieved and accepted

under my lors it just says recieved. does this mean they haven't been verified?

Last Year the sites to fill up the quickest were, I saw on a website when I was surfing by were

Duke, Yale, Columbia

The acceptance rate came from a statement on the last year Columbia facebook group. 1 out of 12 got accepted that year.

Verified means that the have posted it to your application that they have received your application requirements. I say verified because the time they actually receive it differs than the time when they actually verify it on your application.

All your materials have been verified.

example.

"I sent my transcript last week to SMDEP but on application it still says pending."

"Oh don't worry it takes a least 2 weeks for it to posted to your application or verified"

is washington a popular site?..i checked their typical schedule and they dont seem to have much clinical exposure compared to case. i wish i could apply to case but i can't since i'm on quarter schedule.

Thanks, UVA's program site appeals to me the most actually because of their "cutting edge lecture series" as they call it. Only thing I dislike about their site is that they expect you to provide your own meals. My cooking skills are fine, but I can easily see how it would be bothersome to cook for every meal; also, a significant portion of your stipend would have to go to the meals that they don't provide! That alone makes me want to reconsider another site.
