Hey Everyone-

I'm getting a little upset seeing all of these "if you're confirmed in August you're LATE" replies in reading people's responses to "what are my chances" questions.

The fact of the matter is, people have been taking the MCAT and applying to medical school during the same summer for YEARS...there can't be THAT many people who are SO AHEAD of the game. My plan is to have all of my secondaries done by the time my committee letter/MCAT scores are available in mid-September. There is absolutely NO WAY that my situation could have been any different without taking a year off, and I'm certain that there are those of you out there who are JUST LIKE ME.

So here's to everyone out there who can't stand hearing that they "missed the boat" and is holding out hope for an acceptance THIS YEAR!

Post with good news.

quite honestly medical schools have the ENTIRE YEAR to review your application. They spend the ENTIRE year picking their classes. I'm sorry, but I'm not so convinced that having you application complete in August versus September makes that much of a difference. At the end, it mainly comes down to your CREDENTIALS.

It would be a different story if you completed you application in November or December, but even then you'll still have a shot if you have the credentials.

Considering that apps. are electronic now, and schools can filter the best applicants to review first, I think a complete date sometime in September is normal for all non-SDN pre-meds. (LizzyM hinted at this a month or so ago...she said being complete mid-August at her school puts you among the first to be reviewed) Now there are gunners everywhere, but SDN seems to be a collaboration of the greatest neurotic minds, the upper echelon of anxiety driven individuals (I am not saying this is bad, just scary).

My pre-med committee does not send out letters until September, and no, that's not a lie or exaggeration. There was literally nothing else that could be done with my application, unless I sent individual letters, at which point I would have to address why I skipped the committee on various secondaries.

That said, is it better to be complete early? Obviously. The normal applicants will most probably be viewed on a first-come, first-serve basis after the super competitive applicants are reviewed. Any way to get around this? Doubt it. But I cannot believe that SDN represents the majority of applicants. (i.e. My friend submitted AMCAS June 3 this year, verified June 6. He received secondaries and has not done any of them, thinking that you were not allowed to send them in until MCAT scores were back in hand. He is a typical applicant.)

All my friends in med. schools now told me to close my SDN account because you will go insane by the end of the cycle, but I'm a bad listener, and here I am. Another member will discredit all these examples in a latter post, saying July/August complete or wait til next cycle, but there are 45000 applicants to med school each year, and at least 90% of them are not on SDN. I'll check back to see how quickly I'm discredited. (But good luck to everyone applying, early or late)

Edit: (I believe about 50% of a class is generally filled by December, so if you are interviewing after that, then chances are reduced, but not gone)

I agree. This place drives me CRAZY.

Christ. I love the people on here who say "OMG I just submitted the last of my 30 secondaries today, and I'm a 35/3.8! Do I stand a chance at all?"

We premeds have a bad rep for a reason. Everyone's so goddamned neurotic. September's ok by me.

Is John's hopkins rolling or non-rolling...i would guess non-rolling? In that case lateness isn't nearly as important....

ksmi was one of the first ones verified on this forum and she has a 4.0/40. 😱

I will also be having everything complete BY mid-September. The way I have everything planned is that my MCAT scores will be available at the beginning of September, my last two letters will be sent mid-August, and my AMCAS will be verified beginning to mid-September. Honestly, I think my timing is perfect. Granted, it's not super early, but really, it's not late either.

And one more thing... I have come to believe that the whole medical school application process is one big MIND GAME - the MCAT is a test of mental endurance and ability to handle stress, the AMCAS and secondaries also test your endurance and willingness to follow through. It takes patience and strength to just make it through the process, whether you actually make it into medical school or not. And on top of all this, we premeds are playing mind games with each other, especially here on SDN. I love this website as a resource, but some people on here can really psych you out and make you question yourself.

This is my new favorite thread 🙂

I submitted July 24th and am still waiting to be verified. I thought I was fine until I started reading everyone on here being all 'OMG if you're not already verified and getting interview offers, don't bother'... I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Good luck everybody! I'm freaking out! 😱

Haha I love this thread 🙂 I submitted on July 24th as well and was starting to get a bit worried....plus, if *everyone* submits in June, doesn't that negate the effects of being early?? 😛

Good luck everyone!

I submitted the first week of August. The last person to submit could be top of the pile depending on how they stack applications at your school of choice! I'm not concerned. Even if it takes 6 weeks to verify I'll still be in close to a month before the deadlines.

I'm planning on submitting by the end of August- I hope you guys are right about late submissions not being such a big deal

SDNers have been making me super anxious about my application cycle! I have even considered delaying sending my app for next years cycle...

I took the MCAT on Aug 6th so I expect to be complete at the end of Sept...we'll see how it goes

This thread gives me hope after spending the last couple of months wandering through SDN and concluding that applying in August = damnation and failure.

I would really like it if you guys post some more examples of people you know that applied later in the cycle and still got in.
