Very nice. 🙂

I have nothing new to share with the forum. The ATF is taking its sweet time as they always do, but I'll post pics when the goods are out of Form 4 purgatory. The checks cleared 3/11 so I'm thinking July ...

Nice one, not much of a revolver fan myself, but certainly a sexy gun...

Pgg, what did you send in your $200 for?

Friend of mine brought (another) 44 mag revolver to the range on Sunday ... he loves them ... don't recall the model, but it was tiny. My hand hurt about 10 minutes after I emptied its 5 shots.

I'm eyeballing a Ruger single six myself but have other toys on the list first.

Pgg, what did you send in your $200 for?

Form 4 pending - Surefire FA762K suppressor
Form 4 pending - Silencerco SS Sparrow 22lr suppressor
Form 3 d-to-d pending (still! those jerks! 😡) Silencerco Osprey .45acp suppressor
Form 1s for a pair of SBRs should be going off soon, looking at 5.56, 6.8, and .300 blackout uppers for those.

Just installed the Surefire brake / QD mount for the FA762K on one of my AR10s, and it's kind of a nice recoil reducer, but oh god does it suck to be standing next to someone else firing it. I think we upset our neighbors at the next bench over on Sunday.

/end hijack, sorry pod

With that many forms pending, I wouldn't be surprised to find out the ATF wants to meet you in person...

The Python is a relatively heavy wheelgun and IMHO felt recoil is pretty minimal even with fairly stout loads, but then again I have never been particularly bothered by the recoil of the 44 mag Rugers either. I have yet to try out the 500 S&W, but hopefully will get a chance before the year is over.

For plinking, you can always load the 357 with 38 special rounds and then recoil is like a 22 LR.

Now to see if my brother in law will make a single piece ivory grip for it like the one he made for this gun.

CUSTOM FREEDOM ARMS .44 SPECIAL by Bowen Classic Arms. One-piece ivory grips by Paul Persinger, El Paso, TX.

and then get the action tuned by Grant Cunningham if he ever opens his waiting list up.

HA, when I opened this thread I totally expected to see a picture of a baby! What was I thinking? 🙂

Very nice little pea shooter, by the way.

Funny, I initially thought baby too, then was thinking of posting how I wished it had been a gun or car.

To my relief, it was a gun.

That is gorgeous.

Not to brag on him or anything, but here is his magnum opus.

From a single piece of (legal) ivory

That is inSANE. What's the price tag on something like that?

Some say he purposely uses misleading titles for his threads. Some say he just laughs when he knows that the people who would really enjoy his thread probably aren't even going to open it. All we know is he is called...

Well, that's not the whole story, though - just ballpark. I mean, I can't even find real ivory save for about 4 on Google - one is $30K, the other 3 are $1200, and none are pistol or rifle handles.

Are we talking $10K? 20?

(The reason I mention this is that my 2nd next new pair of boots - after hippo - are elephant, because, in a few years, importation of elephant leather will be prohibited; ivory has been verboten for 20 years now, I believe - yeah, 1988.)

Not trying to be a d*** or anything, but really if you want to know what Paul charges just contact him. He is a hell of a nice guy and IMHO charges way less than he could/ should for the product that he produces. I do not know what his current waiting list length is or if he has any openings on his list. I would guess that, with the economic downturn, wait list times are substantially less than they were a few years ago.

As far as I am aware, he has never published anything akin to a price list on the internet and if that is his desire then I will respect that. He used to have a paper flyer that he would send to potential clients that gave a rough idea of cost. My copy predates medical school times and I don't know whether or not he has an updated copy.

Lovely pistols, pod.

But where on this Green Earth do you legally find ivory the size to do a rifle stock nowadays? I thought I was lucky that I got the last of the ivory tips for a violin bow that I have.

I'm a fan of function over form and no unnecessary frills, but that lever action is BEAUTIFUL.

Any of you guys have a preban full auto?

👍👍 Congrats! Do you have any other kids or are those your first?

Thanks! These boys are number 2 and 3. I also have a 3 year old girl at home. Needless to say she is ecstatic about being a big sister!

Sorry for the hijack, POD...

You're an MS 1, with newborn twins at home? God bless your wife and you. I hope they have synchronized sleeping schedules.

Thank you, Trinity... it has been... an adventure! 🙂

Sleep schedules? Well, we've had 2 nights of decent sleep (a few 1-3 hour blocks), but regressed to the ~30min intervals again last night. We are hoping that it gets better soon!

Congrats on the twins, my twin girls are 9, I promise you will survive 🙂

Thank you for the words of encouragement... there are nights where I don't think that's true!

Cherish the moment when you can hold both of them asleep on your chest, I miss those moments the most..

/end sappy

holy crap, periopdoc, you move to MT and this is what happens? ;-).

Hey guys, sorry to crash your thread but I had a quick gun question.

So a put bull rescue moved in across the street from my parents (out in rural CA) and the crazy lady who owns the joint has about 90 dogs and no idea what shes doing. Some of the dogs are rescued from dog fighting rings, which is great for them, but not for neighbors.

I am moving out of the area (for med school, hell yeah!), and I want to get my parents something to protect themselves and our horses from the pitbulls. Just something simple for self defense or to scare them away if they get into our ranch.

Do you have any suggestions on a good/easy to use/not to hardcore handgun for my parents? They are super liberal and have never fired a gun before, let alone owned one.

Thanks for the advice, sorry to crash the thread. Also, those ivory handles look amazing.

These days it seems you are more likely to get sued for harming an animal than you are for harming a human being, self defense or not. I see ads for these subsonic noise makers that are supposed to halt dogs in there tracks. I would look into those.

I'll probably get criticized for saying it, but I would not get someone a handgun unless I knew I could get them of the mindset where they would be willing to use it. If you think you can get them on board with firearms training and practice and help them develop that mindset, probably any self defense handgun would do. If they are not willing to use it, I'd be more concerned about the gun being a liability for them than something useful.

Don't know how you guys upload pictures. I found one on the web. Hitting copy image in one tab and then paste into this box didn't seem to work. So I saved the image and clicked the attachment button. Hopefully it shows up.

It's supposed to be a picture of a cute looking pitbull that will probably be displayed in court if the last poster's parents shoot it. A lawyer will probably say something along the lines of "Pitbulls aren't the problem. Could this animal harm anyone? He doesn't know what a gun means." There will probably be PETA protesters outside the court house. Humans can be very easily swayed by their emotions.

I'm taking them to a few NRA firearms classes prior to purchasing anything, thats a definite. I really value the input.

One of her dogs got out a few months ago and ate some of another neighbors live stock. He shot the dog and the lady who owned the rescue made a big stink but didn't sue. And I would much rather have my parents sued for killing a pit bull then eaten by one. But you do have a valid point, and its crazy that people would value the life of a violent dog over a human.

It depends on your purpose. You need to consider then answer the following.

Do you want to dispatch the pests without alerting the neighbors at all?

Do you want to dispatch the pests and you don't care if the neighbors hear?

Do you want a personal defense gun in case one of those pests is headed for you or your loved ones?

Do you really just want to scare them away?

Do you want something to carry all the time or just something that is reasonably close by and can be grabbed if needed?

How many acres is the ranch? How big are the properties around you?

You also need to consider that you are in the People's Republic of California and not all options in other states are options there.

Shooting a marauding pit bull isn't the black & white issue it should be ...

Check with local law enforcement and state law. Discharging a firearm within city limits in a non life-or-death situation is legally risky; discharging a firearm anywhere to protect property has the potential to get you in a lot of trouble (except in Texas, I guess). Your own pets and livestock are "property" so the police may or may not take a very dim view if you protect Fifi from that attacking pit bull with a gun. I think it's just a misdemeanor, but people lose their carry permits all the time for this sort of thing.

If the pit bull is attacking you or another person it's open season ... subject to the obviously huge risks of firing a gun at a target inches from you or another person.

There's civil liability and risk associated with destroying another person's property (the pit bull) even if justified. There may be time, stress, lost wages, court and attorney fees that aren't likely to be recovered from the kind of ******* deadbeat ******s who let their pit bulls roam the neighborhood.

There's neighborhood drama associated with shooting a neighbor's dog.

Pepper spray or bear spray might be a better plan A.

Pepper spray or bear spray might be a better plan A.

👍👍

Some states, it is a justified shoot if imminent life threat exists to your pet as well, I believe, but look it up.

How about a taser?

They're pretty expensive and local/state laws vary about carrying them. I haven't touched one in a long time but for the one I test-fired years ago during a self-defense class, aiming and accuracy were just OK. I think most models you get one shot. Past these issues I guess maybe one would be fine for defense vs belligerent canines, but I don't know. Thick clothing (and presumably fur) can be a problem.

Related to that, I have mixed feelings about carrying less-lethal devices for self defense vs people. I have trouble thinking of a threatening incident that I couldn't get away from, yet had the time and standoff distance to make a non-lethal use of force a safe first step. If someone is inside ~20 feet and clearly intends to harm me, he is getting shot until he stops, even if there's pepper spray in my pocket. Things happen too quickly at short range to start conservatively.

Cops who use Tasers usually have more cops with Glocks, shotguns, or AR15s right behind them so their calculus is different.

I have pepper spray in my car but in truth it generally stays there and doesn't get carried anywhere. I don't see myself ever buying a Taser.

Wow, thats for all of the great advice!

The gun would be a last ditch defense. We keep a can of bear spray near the horses right now, in case the dogs get in. Don't get me wrong, I would not shoot the dog if they are just in the yard. The gun would be used as a last ditch defense only.

And I live out in the boondocks of CA. People in my neighborhood shoot skeet in their backyards sometimes, and coyotes are commonly shot when on someones property. We are probably the only family in the area that does not own a firearm.

Again, thanks for the advice. I am going to look into a police quality taser and the laws about defending pets before I make a decision.
