Can MDs apply to osteopathic residencies this time around? I noticed eras opened for DOs in July but not for MDs til September. I was under the impression MDs could apply to DO residencies this year but its not showing up in eras.

As a DO student, my first question is: why would you want to?

On a serious note, I don't think they are open to MD students yet. Probably due to still not knowing how to handle your OMM training.

I am applying ACGME only though, so I haven't exactly stayed on top of this, so I may be mistaken.

Not open to MD students yet. There also will be requirements as stated above. My guess would be that it's still years off before everything is hashed out. The requirements haven't even been decided on and there are still two matches. If you match AOA you are automatically removed from the ACGME which occurs later. That's not something you want.

Why would you even consider this

For those looking to do derm/ortho/ent/plastics/radonc....etc. Most will go wherever they can get in, especially if its favorable geographically. If I'm trying to match ortho and a DO program has likable people and a good location, then I don't care whether its DO or not....afterall, i still get to keep my MD at then end of it all.

There are no DO plastics or radonc residencies. Additionally there are very few derm, of which the majority have little to no funding. There are only 40 or so ENT spots, most being in the same geographical area. Someone mentioned Psych above, but the DO programs are notorious for being at small community sweatshops.

There may be reasons to go Ortho, but then again, you'll have to do some arbitrary OMM requirement and be going against the top DO students. Mediocre MD students aren't going to be grabbing these spots. You might as well put all your eggs in traditional ACGME baskets.

One of our admins is on the merger board and has stated that it's moving far faster than anyone originally predicted. So fast that they're actually expecting a single match in 2018, even 2017 is starting to seem more likely (current 3rd years, get ready). I agree though that it will take a bit more time than that to hash out all the little details, what that might actually entail I don't know.

With the inherent bias that many MDs and ACGME residency programs have had against DOs I'm not sure how we've 'had it good' for too long. Just look at how few DOs match into certain specialties in a given year and the stats a DO has to have compared to an equal MD counterpart. It's pretty obvious that DOs have been at a disadvantage, not 'had it good'.

OP I would say you will not be able to match in a DO residency. Maybe in 5+years
