I have used the search button so please--no comments on that.

My question is this:

What is the threshold on the criminal background check done by companies that a medical school can not only revoke your admission---or even merely rescind it, but have it expunged? I am very curious about the crimes that people do that do not get them where they need to be. An additional question of mine is whether misdemeanors have any significance when reports are done.

What do you mean?

I mean that i would like to conduct a criminal background check on myself. Is that possible, by hiring the company or "buying" into their service?

I had a tousle with the authorities...

aSagacious will regale you with the tale of how I ran for the border...

Nothing actually happened, but I still freaked out and got the criminal background check... alllll clear.

Hmm, well after a cursory glance at their homepage I wasn't able to find a link, but I know that 'Certiphi' is the company that AMCAS uses, so maybe you can shoot them an email.

The biggest threshold is lying. If you say you don't have a misdemeanor and you do have a misdemeanor, you are fuxxored. In some states, excessive speeding = reckless driving = misdemeanor. Be very careful with this one.

The next biggest threshold is felony convictions. If you have a felony, you can't even be an EMT. Fuggetabout medicine.

Somebody else will have to comment on the significance of misdemeanors. If you admit to a misdemeanor on your applications and yup there is a misdemeanor on your record, well at least you didn't lie about it. I have no idea how that affects your admissions chances though. It can't be good.

Finally, most medical schools use Certiphi to do background checks. Ordinarily you can't run a Certiphi check on yourself. But after you submit your primary, AMCAS gives you a secret personal access code and URL link that you can use to run an optional Certiphi check on yourself and see the results, before the medical schools do the same thing to you post-acceptance. It costs a little less than $100.

Great!! I just wasted 40 bucks on a People Smart result that could not find any information on me. By the way, you cannot have a criminal record if you were not arrested or given a citation, right??

I was freaking out about my personal situation. Don't lie, and if your meant to get in, you will. Just ask LizzyM. Depends how severe it is though obviously. They understand people make mistakes, it how you deal with it that will effect your life

Oh, since you're here (and I'm being lazy) do you remember where you ordered the screening?

As you were notified in the AMCAS application, you have applied to at least one medical school that is participating in an AMCAS-facilitated national background check service, through which Certiphi Screening, Inc. (a Vertical Screen(R) Company) will procure a background report on early decision program applicants at the point of acceptance and all other applicants at the point of acceptance after January 1st.

Upon your conditional acceptance by a participating medical school for EDP accepted applicants and all other applicants after January 1st, or upon request by a participating medical school that adds you to its alternate list, Certiphi Screening, Inc. will send an email with additional information to your preferred email address. To ensure that you meet this requirement, please:

* Ensure that your preferred email address is up to date at all times
* Add [email protected] as a trusted email sender

Should you choose to do so, for a fee, you may procure your own report from Certiphi Screening, Inc. in advance of the AMCAS-facilitated report by going to https://www.applicationstation.com/home/cal.asp?rc=CERTAP2012. Please note that this is not required, and that this optional report will not take the place of the report to be procured at the time of conditional acceptance or upon request by a participating medical school that adds you to its alternate list.

For additional information, including details regarding the consumer report to be procured, go to Certiphi's web site at http://www.applicationstation.com.

If it is expunged, you don't need to disclose it for MD applications. They cannot disqualify you if they see an expunged record.

/thread.

MIP/MIC, Shoplifting, driving infractions = they aren't going to give a f***

DUI, Drug charges, misdemeanor assault = you've got a lot of explaining to do

Child abuse, sex crimes, felony assault (really most felonies) = don't bother applying

Whether a felony or misdemeanor, anything involving sex, drugs, victimizing a child or elder, or violence is going to be a problem. Alcohol, noise violations, speeding, pissing in public not a big deal.

Wait, you are worried about your record, yet you have never been arrested or given a citation of any kind? Stop being paranoid, you are fine. 😀
