Hello.

I have heard from many of my pre-dental friends, as well as from the dentists that I shadow, that there are many pre-dental summer programs. Programs can be geared towards academic enrichment, pre-dental clinical simulation, volunteer work in foreign countries, etc.

I was hoping to start an organized list of pre-dental summer programs so that if anyone is interested in doing something during the summer, they can refer to this list. Please include basic info., such as the name of the program, deadline, location (if possible), and the website where we can find more info.

So... If you are familiar with any pre-dental summer program, please contribute to this list!

Thanks :claps:

Im pretty sure theres one at VCU. My pre-health advisor sent a flyer about it to all the pre-dents.

Summer programs:

So there are a handful but most of the deadlines have probably passed for summer 2011. There is the one at University of the Pacific which is 2 days; there are all the ones for SMDEP which is six weeks in the summer across the country at various locations. There's one at UNLV, Midwestern, and Oklahoma, but those deadlines have passed too. Aside from the SMDEP ones, there is one for UMDNJ which has an application deadline of October 1st for the 2 weeks in January it focuses on. Good luck!!

Midwestern Arizona:

Dear Pre-Dental & Pre-Health Students, Organizations & Advisors,
We are the Midwestern University Chapter of the American Student Dental Association. Midwestern University is one of the country’s newest dental schools and our campus houses one of the most technologically advanced Dental Simulation Clinic in the nation! It is with great excitement that we would like to invite any students interested in dentistry to visit Midwestern University’s College of Dental Medicine to participate in the MWU ASDA CLINICAL SIMULATION COURSE.
The two-day sessions will be offered June 10-11, 2011 or June 17-18, 2011 from approximately 8am-4pm each day. Both weekends will be exactly the same, and will offer attendees the opportunity to experience and utilize our state-of-the art facility’s technology and gain some hands-on dental experiences! In addition, students will receive educational seminars on topics for first year dental students.
Valuable first-hand experiences will include:
• Seminars on preparing for dental school, dental techniques and other topics
• Alginate impressions
• Pouring and trimming stone models
• Cavity preparations with electric hand pieces
• Exploring dental anatomy with the 3D computer program used by MWU students
• Using state-of-the-art CAD-CAM technology
• Waxing proper tooth anatomy
• Placing a composite restoration
Seats are limited and the course fills quickly. We are currently taking applications on a first-come, first-served basis. The application for the course can be found at the following website:

From all of us at ASDA, we look forward to working with you in June!

I did the UNC SEP Program and highly recommend it. It was fairly intense but fun and well worth it. We shadowed all the specialties, took 4 science classes, attended seminars on interesting science breakthroughs amongst other things.

UNC also has the MED Program, which is awesome as well and crazy intense (mocks the first semester of d-school). I was accepted this summer but unfortunately turned it down for another summer program- the Uconn medical/dental preparatory program. I REALLY wanted to do MED but I felt Uconn was focused on more of what I needed this summer, so maybe next summer I will have the chance to do MED. Uconn's program is supposed to be really good as well. I think for the most part you can't go wrong.

A little different because it's public health/hospital based:

I think the program only takes 2 applicants for their dental branch. You will work 35 hours per week in the hospital clinics alongside dental residents (residency cycles start in June; so do you!). You will take operating room cases with the residents, attend lectures with them (they will be over your head but interesting), and learn from the attending doctors with them. You also do a research project and present it at a conference.

You see all the specialities and work in a public health setting a.k.a. the patients beg for the bargain treatment. Definetely different from private practice.

If you know you want to do a GPR, this would be for you. If you love the cases where somebody on warfarin comes in with 8 teeth that need to be extracted but you can't treat them so they go crazy and security has to be called, this is for you 😛
