As if changing the NBDE wasn't enough! In August 2011 the GRE is adopting a completely new format. Does anyone know much about this? How will this affect ppl applying to residencies that require the GRE e.g. ortho or OS?

I myself am wondering if I should rush to take the old GRE before August or wait it out for the new one...which will supposedly be significantly improved for the test taker.

Or does it even matter? Do residencies really place any consideration on applicants' GRE scores or is it just a formality?

Per the ortho chair at my school, yes, schools do take seriousely your GRE school. Many of the applicants felt the same. Maybe not weighed as heavy as Part I but still important to do well...

GRE is not required for OS at is not a Master's program.

Old vs. new? Who knows... Of course they claim the test will be "improved" whatever that means. Just study and take it when you're ready and don't spend too much time trying to stategize when to take.

Best regards!

no one can tell but i am sure they are going to make quantitative part more competitive since the percentile of ppl taking 800 or full mark is more than 80

so do it before august and you will have a chance to redo it if the new version is somehow better

Hopefully they will change it to pass/fail. That would be awesome. The final step will be for PASS to no longer accept CVs, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. It's simply unfair to let people submit all of this stuff and be compared to one another.
