I don't think premeds are considered qualified to use surgical equipment.
 
In addition to the burn mark on the skin I can see a bunch of keratin signal on the bovie screen:laugh:

I'm assuming that's including the actual mass spec? That's in the ballpark I would have figured (was thinking anywhere 200k-1m). Seems like it wouldn't be hard to justify the cost though if it removed the need to do frozen sections
 
i remember pre-med i was in this lab that we burned water to analyze it. Spectrography. It was pretty awsome, it gaves a curve of all the basic elements absorption, we just had to integrate it to have the concentration. I am yet to figure out what is the parameter to differentiate cancer from non cancer, especially after being burnt. I recon this could be effective in very well differentiate cancers that produce a specific substance.
But i think a probe kind of device would be better than a knife, to check ressection borders, or even to pre plan ressection.

I was wondering this too - seems like it would require pretreatment with isotope uptake by the neoplastic cells, but maybe they've got something else worked out
