Good grief! That will be fun to try and digest if you have the kind of shift where you get to sleep an hour or two.

Problem with my hospital is the cafeteria closes so you either bring something from home (which guarantees it will be crappy, at least for me) or eat out.
Yeah it's not that much because I work out twice a day but it wasn't nutritious.

What are good late night places to get some food? When I'm on a shift I find myself ordering a large order around 8PM because I know we won't get to go eat out again in the night.

That really depends on your geo location. Obviously if you're working in a city you should be able to find something reasonable. I usually try to hit a 24/7 grocery store to buy prepped food but you may not have that in your area. If you're open to cliff bars, they will definitely keep you sustained.

I bought cliff bars one time for everyone, during the day they ignored them, but in the night when everything was closed and it was call after call, cliff bars were the best food ever. lol
:soexcited::corny:
We do have some Krogers that are open 24/7, though. I'm too lazy to make my own meal usually when I do a shift it is cheat day for me and I could only cook boring old healthy food.

I had Quiznos for the first time today (had the Black Angus), it was good, but I think it was loaded with sodium. Usually I know this because I get thirsty like a mofo.

Pretty much everytime I have Subway I experience that. I think it's crazy that some people can eat that food w/ a soda and NOT drink water. You know those people, "I don't like water." Crazy stuff right there lol!

I run a night shift on Mondays for my ambulance service and it is usually very quiet. Basically just a different bed to sleep in. When we do get calls they're seldom of disastrous nature

Yeah, grocery stores will often be open late, but unfortunately they don't often provide the pre-made goodness I'm looking for when I have late night hunger pangs.. Many McDonald's and Taco Bell will be open 24 hrs a day.

It always bugs me when I crave something specific during the night and the places that have that particular product are never open.

Soda is the worst for the salty stuff. I always end up drinking a ton of water trying to compensate and then have to pee the rest of the freaking night.

You guys tried firehouse subs? They're not open late so you need to get it before 10 pm, but if you're on duty as a first responder they give you a free drink and their subs are WAY BETTER than subway/quiznos IMO. Way more meat in particular.

I wake up to pee every single night because I drink a lot of water; I've memorized the walk to my bathroom in pitch black.

Yeah, Firehouse is the truth. I din't know that bit about the first responders. That's good to know.

I try to stay away from places that will give me the runs. TMI here: I tend to just go to the bathroom once in a 24 hour shift. I'm gonna start a thread over there on EMTLIFE and ask what are good and easy meals to make during a shift.

Gotta be careful when you're new! These jobs are hard to get in the first place. Sometimes there are like 5 or 6 premeds waiting to take your spot. :p
I'm getting it. I'm having the most trouble typing lol. I've been practicing how to properly typing so in a bout two weeks I'll be much faster.

Typing gets so fast the more you do it. If it's a big part of your job you'll definitely get fast.

Lol, wasn't sure I should say it or not.. But yes, I wanted to imply that the only places that are open late seem to be the ones that pile drive your insides.

I work on a psych unit as a 1:1 patient attendant, basically spending the night with a patient that can't be left alone. A few nights ago I was with an elderly lady sitting in the lounge. This patient who is 19-20 and the SEXIEST girl I've ever seen comes up and sits next to me, asking about my job and what exactly I do. Before I answer the old lady chimes in "I follow him around and he tells me what to do". The girl starts rubbing my thigh and says "I'd love for you to tell me what to do to you all day" before like 5 nurses intercept her

Always an exciting night lol

I love the night shifts at my place of business. Heck, last night I was at work from 1am to 6am removing a donors corneas at the coroners office.

If anything those jobs are always open and nobody wants them. :p The pay is extra, though (depending on your location).

I get time and a half for my night shifts, it's pretty nice.

The other day we worked all the way through the night since the OR kept on getting patients. One patient comes to us in recovery having undergone a lap surgery for ovarian torsion, but one of her incisions kept bleeding. I sat there holding pressure on the wound (which kept bleeding through) before the doctors decided they needed to take her back to the OR and investigate. I went back with them and got to watch the whole surgery, which ended up being an exploratory laparotomy. They found out that there were bleeding ovarian cysts. The surgeons let me get pretty close to the field so I could watch.

Not a funny story but it was really cool to basically do some OR shadowing on the job (and get paid for it).
