I am applying this cycle. Turned in my primary already. The plan is to have all secondaries in by the time the MCAT score comes out. So that my application will be complete September 20th. Not "early" anymore but still in the game!

Is anyone else applying this cycle with this exam date?

8/19 here, doing the same thing! I'll be researching and banging out secondary essay questions in the month that I wait for my MCAT score to come out.👍 I need to finish my PS and get verified still.

I'm kind of worried about my verbal score cause it's around an 8-9. Luckily there is a month left to improve. I think I may take 2 tests a week starting next week cause I need to get more practice. Especially with the essay. I don't wanna blow it off completely and get boned by it just cause I didn't practice.

At least my science scores are coming along decently. If I can maintain/improve science and bring my verbal into the double digits, I think I'll be set.
Could I ask what materials you are using to practice verbal?
I've been trying to do one or two EK101 timed passages each day and I seem to be seeing some improvement, but I haven't tried a full 60 minute verbal section yet.
I guess I'll be writing here even though my MCAT date is 8/18. I didn't see any 8/18 threads here but I don't feel like making one ._. Anyway hope you guys are doing well with the studying -- only about one month to go!
Hoping to take mine on 8/18 too!

MCAT is ruining my summer right now, but verbal is just killing me. I get so tired and sleepy reading those passages trying to decipher what the hell they're trying to say and half the time I don't fully understand it-- especially in arts and literature.

Any advice?

I just opened an EK book. I'm using that right now. I am seeing a few improvements so that's good. I just want to bring my score to the 12/13 area at least, though that's gonna be really damn tough. I think I can do it if I put my mind to it.

And the TPR practice passages in the science workbook are agonizing. I'm in the hormone section and my mind is literally melting. I freaking hate hormones cause they're so complicated since everything seems to be doing the same thing. (you know what I mean) Plus it doesn't help that the passages they give are about as long as a verbal passage and have like 7-10 questions.

Honestly with EK verbal there are usually at most 1 or 2 questions that cannot be answered by simply main idea alone, everything else is pretty simple as long as you grasp the main idea. What I try and do is read for the main idea while summarizing each paragraph in my own head, noting the places that I didnt quite understand completely (there are usually a few) but not stopping to study them in detail. I find summarizing makes it easier to recall exactly where I can find support or lack of support for answers when I have to make the tough call between two choices.

My passage times are pretty good, I dont have a lot of verbal material or a lot of time, so I'm basically just doing 2-3 verbal passages a day in my spare time. I'm annoyed at myself because I was killing EK101 test 4 and then took the last passage with a major lack of caffeine headache, and plowed through it just eager to finish. Got 3 wrong out of 7 and it dropped me from a 13 to a 11... ugh.

I both love and hate VR, and I dont think thats going change pre, during, or post MCAT (unless I get a 15.)

I just want to quit working and just study but I still got like 3 weeks left...I can't believe I'm saying this but I'd rather study than get paid right now.

I'm in the same damn situation man. Are you in an internship too? I am just waiting for August 5th, so I can go at it with studying for 2 hardcore weeks before the exam.

What are you guys currently hitting on your practice tests? I'm hitting 27's on TPR tests I am taking.

I got a 33 on my past 2 TPR tests that I've taken. I'm hoping to bump that up to around a 35 this weekend. I can't wait for content review to be done come August so I can attempt an AAMC test to see how I fare.

Did you guys have to pay for all the TPR materials to take those tests or can you buy those separately? Are they CBTs?

You can buy them separately, in a way. I was originally enrolled in Princeton Review, but my course was under enrolled and consequently cancelled. They refunded me and never asked for their materials back. All of their materials gave me access to their full library of CBTs.

However, you can also purchase these materials in any bookstore or on Amazon. Every Princeton Review book has codes for online materials, including their full-lengths and practice sections. Cracking the MCAT gives you 4. Their subject review books give 2 each.

I'm also taking it on the 18th! Im freaking out actually since my VR scores on EK 101 haven't been that great... so many 7's recently... wtf!

I've been taking the Kaplan course so far and it's kind of a waste of time I feel. They simplify the class way too much. I also get confused with what I actually have to know for the exam because their books are really detailed and then their classes are so general.

I'm pretty much on the same boat with a handful of people here with verbal - it's the section im most worried about at this point.

AHhh I totally know how you feel about Kaplan...I almost wish I had gone with just ExamKrackers. However I'm the kind of person that likes to go a little overboard, so the extra details is sort of nice. I'm reading through the review notes and taking notes trying to learn as much as I can. Hopefully once I do some AAMC tests, I'll have an idea what details to go back and really learn and what I could just keep as background or ignore.
Just a month left...time is too short. :meanie:

:/ Yeah, I just realized today is the 1-monthe-left mark. I'm suddenly starting to feel the pressure.

How many FL exams have you taken so far? And how many more? I've only taken the Kaplan FL #1 so far.. and I just ordered the AAMC 7,9,11!

I haven't taken any! The day after tomorrow is my last day of review. Then I go on a quick weekend trip and take AAMC 3-11 starting next tuesday over a ~23 day span up until the day of our test!

I can't wait to see how I do! Hoping for a 34+ on the real deal but I'd be happy with a 32 or 33.

I'm pretty much in the same position. I've taken Kaplan FL1 and FL2 so far. I plan to take FL3 by this weekend for my Kaplan class.

Hoping I can manage Kaplan FL4 next week, FL 5 the week after and then I'm going to spend the two weeks before the test just doing AAMC tests. I really hope I can go through the AAMC tests in two weeks, ideally I want to do 7-11, maybe AAMC 7 and 8 the first week. AAMC 9 and 10 the week after and just squeeze in AAMC 11 a day or two before the test to get a final idea of where I'm at.
I'm still in content review and won't be officially finished till next week, so there's a lot to finish in a short bit of time. :xf:

Geez...I didn't realize there was only a month left. Now I feel :scared: again...My study schedule has been pretty concentrated since the summer began. I did some content review through June and finished all the Kaplan FLs just last week. Now I've moved onto TPR FLs...I have like 6 of those left. Then, I have all the AAMC practice tests to take. Some might say the amount of testing I'm doing is excessive, but I spent a minimal amount of time with content review and the tests have really, really helped me. My average right now is at like 37+, but I am pushing to get that up to 40+ by the time I get to the AAMC practice tests. I know it's ridiculous to strive for a 40+, but I need it to offset my GPA (my school is one of the rare colleges that knowingly practices grade deflation). Yeah, sorry I'm whining, but I needed to get that out. With a month I know I can finish all my exams, but I just hope I don't get burnt out come 8/19...

Yeah, I'm shooting for high 30's, but for that I really need to just finish my content review. But overall, seems like you have a good plan ahead!

You're definitely just like me just a FL exam ahead I guess haha.

Wow, you're really going for the top... Those practice exam scores are awesome! With the time left I'm sure you can get to the 40+ if you keep at it the same way.

I'm just freaking out right now because I'm not really at a level in verbal that I want to be... its really frustrating. I'm pretty sure my science sections will be okay though.

My science scores are decently high which is good, but verbal is really hit or miss for me. I have a 2002 EK book, but I think I may just stop using it and use the most recent one I can find. I just suck at verbal. I think I would be set if I could consistantly hit 10/11 on verbal.

Hi guys . I just got my scores back from the june 16 test and it looks like im taking this test date because I am not happy with my verbal. Do any of you have any suggestions of what I should do as far as studying for verbal? I am thinking I might just review for a few days, then just flat out take a fl everyday until test time.

Wow you guys are doing really well on those FL! I know that I'm really behind in content review, but my scores are nowhere near the range 🙁

I signed up for 8/18 for a retake as well, in anticipation to bad score from my 7/6 test...
I'm gonna give myself 4 weeks to study. 1 week to review all content. 3 weeks to do more FL's and passages... Wish us luck!!!

I heard the newer version is basically the same thing with less passages... and they reuse 2002 passages.

How were you doing in your practice FL before? Were they representative with the score you got from 7/16 MCAT?

Damn it... Well thanks for the heads up. I appreciate it. I really could use more practice though. I'll probably end up going through the TPR book again because I had no idea what the hell I was doing for the first 15ish or so passages. I guess I gotta be more strategic when doing these EK passages so I can get the most benefit out of them.

I still haven't signed up for the test on the 18th yet. Perhaps I'm procrastinating due the money or because I don't know if I'll be ready. I too am getting slaughtered by EK 1001. I was getting 7s and 8s, but the last two, 10 and 11 I've gotten 5s. I don't know whats been going wrong. I think I'm going to take a practice test my next day. I feel that re-skimming the chapters, doing EK 1001 and doing the last set of passages will solidify everything that I'm missing. Good luck everyone. 😀

ok. here's the plan. I'm going to try to get TBR and TPR before next week if at all possible. Then scatter those FLs around my EK 101 passages. I hope this works (cross fingers) . I was part of the 6/16 verbal slaughter group.

I'm in the same damn situation man. Are you in an internship too? I am just waiting for August 5th, so I can go at it with studying for 2 hardcore weeks before the exam.

Nah, I'm not in an internship but just doing regular research. But all of a sudden I'm piled up with so much work...perfect timing. I guess some MCAT god must really hate me...lol

Haha my verbal score dropped 3 points to a 7on the practice test I just took... I ****ing hate verbal so much. For some reason, I went really slow this time, so I think that's why I ended up missing a few at the end.

yeah I've learned that you have to be crazy focused while reading the passage very quickly. Stuff tends to stick with me better that way

I asked a friend what her older brother did to score >40, and she said he did a lot of practice tests, and for verbal, he said he read a lot of articles and made sure he phrased the question in his own words so it wasn't so confusing. Hearing it come from someone I know (sort of) made me decide to change my strategy. I think I'll hit up the economist now and read a few articles a day just for practice.

Practically done with content review.......... actually have a lot of holes to fill in terms of concept understanding. Kaplan FL #2 tomorrow!

Hope everyone's studying is going well! 👍

If AAMC #3 was easy compared to the real thing, then I should just find another career choice or something 🙁🙁

I've been hearing that it's been one of the easier AAMCs... but I think it's a little early to give up? You still have a month left!

If you haven't done content review, you should definitely get on top of it. If you have, find what's keeping you from getting the grades you want. Maybe you don't have enough knowledge of the sciences or maybe you just haven't gotten used to the exam yet.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you do? Was it your first time taking a full-length exam?

Don't give up! It's too early! We're all in it together 🙂

16 PS: 7 VR: 5 BS: 4

It was my first FL. Clearly I dont understand anything and Im not used to the test. Im so embarrassed. Its like I havent been doing anything for the past months. I think I'll do another one tomorrow. I didnt really want to do it today but i just did. I know there were some areas I needed to work one, but I didnt think I would do that bad. Oh well.

Yo, I'm pretty much on the same boat. Except I started with FL AAMC 10 (bad choice) and was completely aghast by the fact that someone could score that low. I mean, all I see is people getting at least 30+ on SDN :eyebrow:

But yeah, I'm gonna try to do content review as much as I could before I start doing all the FLs because I definitely haven't kept up with the material (plus not a very good long term memory...ugh). We'll see...I still got a few weeks 'till the cancellation date.+pity+

Let's not give up!:luck:

Yea, I was just really bummed. I gotta crank it up a few notches. I have ALWAYS hated reading on computers so that makes it difficult as well. Perhaps the fact that I hadn't eaten came into play. There were some questions I knew, but I thought it was a trick so I picked the wrong answer. Tomorrow is grind time. I still haven't registered but there are plenty of open seats. I might just push my test date back if I don't do better in a couple weeks. My gpa is <3.0 and will be around a 3.0 (2.97 ish) by the time I apply so I gotta do really well.

I ABHOR reading on the computer also. I love the feel of paper. I wish they just had the passages on paper (also making it a scratch paper) while having the multiple choice form online. But I guess that just makes the administration of the exam a little more hectic/error prone..

I think it might be a good thing that you've done an exam though. I'm sure its a huge factor in providing a strong push/motivation for you to start studying... don't let go of the feeling, or you'll just stop and later find out that you're a lot more behind than you think, resulting in you delaying your exam date more.

I would advise you not to take another exam tomorrow given that you know you haven't done any content review. I know you have the immediate urge to redeem yourself by consequence of your first score, but save that practice for later and really focus on content. Exams don't really mean much unless you take it after you feel ready for it (unless you're going for getting the feel of it/gauge your performance). I think you'll get the most out of it once you have the foundation knowledge and the exams are more to just figure out your weakness/fill in the gaps of your knowledge.

Verbal passages on the other hand, I think think would be a good idea to start practicing right away. Good luck!

gunito, are you sure there are any seats left for 8/19? Last time I checked for my area, only the last September ones were opened.

Hey, for those of you who took Kaplan FL's, did you guys notice any big differences between Kaplan and AAMC? I took AAMC #3 as my first FL and got a 31. Then, I decided to take a couple of Kaplan tests that I had from a book I bought before and pretty much bombed them! 😱 I mean, I know AAMC #3 is one of the easier exams, but this was ridiculous. The timing for the Kaplan exams were really weird, and the calculations required seemed way too long. I also noticed a few typos in the exams, one of which led me to pick the wrong answer. 😡 Can anyone else confirm their experiences with Kaplan vs. AAMC exams?

So far:

TPR FL average: around 30

AAMC 3: 34 PS:11 V:13 B:10
AAMC 4 (just took): 39! PS: 14 V:12 B: 13

woo 6 more to go 😳

Well from what I've been hearing AAMC 3 and 4 are on the easier side. However, those are good scores! Good job!

As for the Kaplan vs AAMC... there are other threads out there that address this topic. I've only taken Kaplan FL #1 and 2, but none of the AAMCs. I'm only planning on taking 7-11 because that's what most people on SDN have been suggesting.

I heard generally the Kaplan questions are harder and that their verbal style is not that reflective of the AAMC style, which might be the reason why you havent scored as well as you did on the AAMC #3.

I took the Kaplan FL #2 today:
PS/VR/BS
FL 1: 11/8/10 = 29
FL 2: 14/8/13 = 35

My verbal sucks!!! I actually gave up in the middle of the second one because I was so discouraged that I didn't really get the first passage.... I feel like I'm almost burning out on practicing VR. Also is it just me, or it takes a lot of effort to transition your reading styles from the PS to the VR sections. After the PS section I'm always droned to read it more lightly without paying attention to the real content, which is why i struggle with the VR section on the FL exams. Someone help?

I def feel you on verbal. What works for me is reading the last paragraph of a passage first. This helps me in two ways. 1) I am exposed to the author's stance on the passage right away, as opposed to reading multiple paragraphs and attempting to piece together the author's various arguments, and 2) As I read the passage, things start to pop out at me more since I now know what is eventually going to happen; in essence I've already read the spoiler alert. The purpose behind the author's examples and arguments are clearer and easier to understand. Imagine buying a novel, and reading the last chapter first. Now, as you go through the book, you understand why certain events occur and why characters do certain things because you understand their relationship to the ending. In other words, mundane and pointless actions and dialogues now have a whole new meaning, as you have gained perspective of the purpose behind these seemingly arbitrary events.

I know this way of reading a passage may seem quite unorthodox, but this strategy really helps me keep focused. I'm not waiting for the punchline as a I read a passage, because I've already read it! As I read a passage, I simply try to figure out the reasoning which led the author to his conclusion in the first place.

I've found that this seemingly counter-productive strategy actually saves me both time and energy (two valuable commodities on the mcat), since I don't have to read the passage as actively as before; I already know where the passage is ultimately going. Anyway I'm done blabbering. Let me know if this helps, since im curious to know if this works for other people

That's really interesting. It actually might work for me and makes a lot of sense. However, some passages just don't have the stereotypical "last paragraph" so what do you do do then? The reason why I say this might work for me is because I often catch myself rereading earlier paragraphs the further I get into the passage to make sure I'm understanding the passage. This might essentially be your strategy, just more efficient.

Also after you read the last paragraph, and the intro/body, do you take time to read the last paragraph again for clarity?

Are you taking the 8/18 or 8/19 test also? How have you been scoring because I really want to be in the 11/12 range.. 15 in my dreams. LOL but that's not likely.

Thanks for taking your time to share! 👍

Hey guys, quick question. Have any of you been taking the TPR full-lengths? I just took TPR Online Diagnostic 4 and got a 45. Obviously, this made me incredibly ecstatic and blew my mind, but how much is that really worth? Can anyone else with experience on this test assess its difficulty? Thanks!

That is REALLY impressive. I got an 11/6/10 on TPR #4. It wasn't that easy. Okay so now stop studying so the rest of us can catch up 😀

That's really good. I got a 31 on TPR 4. Take TPR 8 if you want a bit of a challenge. That one requires you to think a bit. BTW, what is your strategy for verbal, if you don't mind me asking. That is definitely my weakest section, so I could use all the help I can get.
