The Official June 2015 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just finished the fl practice exam and got PS-85%, CARS -87%, BS-86% and Psyc- 86%. I feel like this corresponds well to some of the scores for the old aamc MCAT. However, there was not a single question on electrochemistry which I was surprised about.

I like to think that whatever's not on the sample will be on the actual test 😉

Seeing the May thread makes me just want to be done with this whole process. Especially seeing people who scored well (or better) than I getting <80% scores.

Ughghghg

Back to studying

Seeing the May taker's scores is getting me nervous yet excited..

😀, the thing is that some of the people on this site are complete gunners. The type of people "who audit lectures the year before they take the course and sabotage labs in the hopes of scrambling up the Almighty Curve over the bodies of fallen brethren." Comparing ones self isn't worth the ensuing downfall of self esteem. But the excitement is a good thing.

Haha yeah definitely a s**t show over there right now. Get pumped!

Anyway, I'm with you there Caf, can't wait to get this thing over with. And I hope you're saving that conversion table for when we get our results back as well.

Judging from the May thread, there seems to be a wild relationship between the practice AAMC scores and the actual exam scores. Honestly looks like it's a crapshoot I guess

^^ I think good practice for the content. I'm not so sure about how representative they are too the actual exam. I think they helped to understand where I needed help tho.

Haha, that is true. The excitement is crazy this cycle. Yay for us?

I really don't think excitement the word to use haha

Hahaha, I was trying to be optimistic. But yea, I prefer scary, nerve-racking and just plain obnoxious. I feel that we all are a great bunch of guys/gals and we deserve to kill this beast and get into our respective dream schools 🙂

Amen! we've all been working so hard. Except for me, I have no clue what I'm doing 😵.

The radius of the aorta is about 1 centimeterand blood passes through it at a velocity of 30 centimeters per secondA typical capillary has a radius of about 4 × 10–4 cm with blood passing through at a velocity of 5 times 10 to the negative 2 centimeters per secondUsing this data, what is the approximate number of capillaries in a human body?
A. 1 × 104
B. 2 × 107
C. 4 × 109
D. 7 × 1012

Anyone solve this for me? And do we need to convert to meters?

You need to equate the volumetric flow rates. So you can keep them both in cm since all that matters is that they have the same units.

Volumetric flow rate through aorta = (pi*radius^2)*velocity= (pi*1^2)*30
Volumetric flow rate through capillaries = (pi*radius^2)*velocity=(pi*(4e-4)^2)*5e-2

Volumetric flow rate thru aorta ÷ Volumetric flow rate through capillaries

will give you the number of capillaries.

So

[(pi*1^2)*30]/[(pi*(4e-4)^2)*5e-2]

canceling out the pi and evaluating the exponent & multiplication in the denominator we get..

30/[(16e-8)*(5e-2)]

30/(8e-9)

=3.75*10^9 which is closest to choice C.

According to NS, 73% correct on CARS is only 50th percentile...do you guys think this will be true of the actual exam? I was hoping the scale would be more forgiving as my average for CARS is ~75%

Don't get discouraged guys. Remember a lot of those 90-100th percentile can be translated to 500-510. The pool is too young still.

It seems like if you did well on the AAMC exam, then you'll do more than fine on the actual exam. I think I remember you posting some good scores, so I wouldn't be too concerned!

Lol it takes me hours to fall asleep these days b/c I keep mentally running down the aamc outline involuntarily and panic when I feel weak or blank on a topic. Can't wait for this to be over

Dude. I just finished the first year of med school as a SMP masters program, and my life has been studying 10 hours a day, every day, every week, for 9 months. And because of that, every single night I would fall asleep thinking about all the god damned material I'd been covering. And when I finally found solace in sleep, I started effing DREAMING what I was studying... It actually got to the point where I was reviewing anatomy structures during exam week. Kinda helpful I guess, but there was never a reprieve!

Just to add fuel to ya'lls fire!
Around 500 on all the Kaplan FL and some Mcgraw hill tests.
Studied off and on for a month or so, spent the last month doing just practice problems, also working full-time and doing research.

AAMC Fl:
C/P: 52%
Cars: 97%
Bio: 89%
Psych: 85%

Actual:
Chem/Phys: 74-89
CARS: 65-80
Bio: 62-77
Psych/Soc: 85-100
Comp: 74-84

Thanks for the motivation! And congrats on your score 🙂

What's the percentile everyone's shooting for? I just wanna get a good enough score to not kill my app ahah

Yeah, I'd just like to apologize in advance for my future stress posts! The closer we get, the more nervous I get! :help:

I'm getting nervous too! But then I tell myself I have to be confident and I'm gonna do great, and I'm reaaaaaallly looking forward to having quite a few drinks afterwards haha

Not doing too well on the 30 min. biology EK tests. When I read the passage, I don't understand what's going on. I read the passage multiple times and I still don't understand the passage or the data tables. Please help. Getting a 14/23.

Im in FL! And yes we should definitely make this thread less stressful and more fun haha

I haven't done the EK stuff. What don't you understand? Terms/definitions? Research focuses/purposes, results? Which passage specifically, I can look at it when I get home.

Im also in NY, how many more full lengths are you guys planning to do this week? Im getting very nervous and Im scared Im going to blank out on sat....
two more, then back to work for me. burned up all my PTO. Grand total of 11 TPR 4 Kaplan 8 old AAMC and 1 New AAMC

So i finally did the official AAMC practice test...

Chem/Phys: 71%
CARS: 81%
Bio/Biochem: 59% 🙁
Psych: Soc: 64%

Time got the better of me on the C/P and Bio sections (which hasn't happened before) so I did around 15 questions in 4 minutes and let's just say my guessing wasn't good haha. I'm going to review my mistakes and re-do the passages i had to skip. Any advice what to do about my Bio section? Are the AAMC question packs worth it? I feel like my bio knowledge is decent, but some of those passages on the practice exam killed me.

Drinks of juice or soda I presume, or perhaps judging by your name COFFEE! Actually nvm, now that I'm thinking about it, you'd want to sleep after the test.

I'm beginning to like this little June thread we've got going here. It's nice to talk to people in the same boat as me.. any NY residents here?

In NY as well.

EK biology 2 book, the first passage of the 30 min exam of Ch. 1. How do you attack a passage like this? All of my answers were wrong when I did questions 1-8 for passage 1.

Doing EK2 tomorrow. Potentially would do half a full length each day Tuesday/Wednesday depending on where I am in memorization. Only bc I've run out of passages pretty much, and would want to keep up timing but without getting exhausted.

I will actually be doing 2 Kap and 2 PR, ik ik it's nuts, but as I've said before, I have no clue what I'm doing.

I took EK 2 today and CARS bent me over and gave it to me good. Idk what happened. 🙁 Lol

I improved on Psych though, which I am happy about since I spent the last two days studying just that.

I know that's what I've been hearing. I've been stinking up CARS recently in TPR/EK even when my AAMC percentages have been great, so I want to avoid being demoralized even more lol. But Between EK and TPR tests, I just don't know which to do.
