The Official June 21, 2014 MCAT thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I felt great after PS, fairly confident after VR, and I literally cried in my car for like 20 minutes over BS. That orgo was death. The bio passages weren't TOO bad but the questions were so specific. I feel terrible

What!? No way. That's so weird. You must feel so stressed right now. Is there a number you can call or anything?

unfortunately all test centers are booked within Canada but I got lucky and found an open spot in another province for august 7th. I am soooo pissed right now.

PS was so easy. I was done with 15minutes left to review. A couple weird discretes, but otherwise I thought it was a really fair representation of past AAMCs. Although I think that they emphasized more on chem. Which I'm happy with 🙂
VR: Not bad at all, except that #6. I always have problems with those kinda passages and it was definitely tricky
BS: Not sure what to think about! The orgo was definitely time-consuming, but some of the questions weren't TOO bad. But the one or two that were took a considerable amount of time. Some of the BIO was weird too, and the discretes were harder... I finished this with 5 minutes to spare.

Hoping for a mid thirties score.. Kinda optimistic! But we shall see in 30-35 days.
NOW...... getting white-gurl-wasted.

That test was pretty rough.

PS: I thought there was more emphasis on GenChem, and I didn't feel confident about the section, but didn't feel too bad. My worst section is always PS, so I'm okay. I feel like some my problem was my fault just not being more well-rounded.

VR: The questions were along AAMC practice test difficulty, but I felt the passages were longer.

BS: I agree with everyone else. It was pretty rough. I felt like I was continuously being blindsided by some of those orgo and experimental passages. Really rough, hoping for a lenient scale.

Is it true that the AAMC said there was no longer going to be aromatic chemistry on the test? If so, how did that get put on there....?

All in all, sad, nervous for my score, and kinda upset. Way too unsure to try and predict my score...

Is any of you a May 8th re-taker?!!

I was a May 8th MCATer & you guys STOP complaining!!! This test was WAY EASIER than May 8th ... in ALL section it was easier ... although we had only 1 passage of combined bio + orgo on May 8th but it was experimental and it was really HARD .. the lowest score in ALL of my practice in BS was an 8 but on the real one it was a 6 .. taking into consideration bio is my strength area as I was a bio major ...... anyways this test was MUCH EASIER than May 8th ... I hope I'll get a good score this time & be done with MCAT for the rest of my life!
well this post is obnoxious, hope you feel the test was "much easier" when you check your scores next month. Don't think the word easy and this BS section should ever be put in the same sentence and this is coming from someone who got a SMP 4.0. Good luck.

edit: sorry if that sounded biting, I'm not in the greatest mood 🙁

UGH...i'm ****ing pissed. I have no idea how I did. as everyone said that bio section was tough. Much tougher than 11. Feel pretty good about PS and VR, but who knows.

Is it possible that some of these bio questions were experimental and won't be counted?

test wasn't too bad
PS straightforward but it depends on my guesses and if my calculations were correct 12-14
VR- Interesting passages but I forgot to fill in 2 guesses 9-11
BS- I felt bad at first but cruised afterwards . made my best guess on the organic passage but not horrible
11-13
This sounds mean but kinda sad everyone thought PS was easy cause that mean a bad curve and I didn't feel amazing on it
Overall I'd say anywhere from 32-38 but it all depends on the curve and my guesses.. And the wait begins

4.0 smp doesn't mean jack regarding mcat. Chill your ego brah lol.

It is certainly possible - no need to stress out.

I felt the same as everyone who posted above: PS and verbal were fine, but BS orgo was a killer. All we can do now is wait and hopefully enjoy the summer for a bit! What's everyone up to post-MCAT?

im seriously depressed at the thought of having to do this all over again...this is going to be a miserable month with an outcome I'm already semi-certain of.

Just relax man, we all feel crappy, let's live this month in freedom! And agonizing nervousness two days before scores release lol.

I was in this mood after May 8th test ... you have NO CLUE what we have seen in that test in the PS section .. if they tell me that May 8th test was a prank, I would totally believe it ... this test felt more reasonable on my opinion. Maybe because I have a strong orgo background & I was happy seeing orgo stuff! ... I find gen chem to be HARD when I compare it to orgo which is common sense to me, that may sound weird but I guess I'm one of the wired people on earth that love orgo!

My feelings are NOT a representative of my score in ALL of my practice + my previous real MCAT ... However, to be honest, this test felt like a real test not like May 8th test ,, that was a joke ... at least I haven't seen some questions that weren't normal such as Human retina & the moon (May 8th MCATers knows what I'm talking about)! Some questions may be difficult in this June 21st test but at least REALISTIC questions!

Those who feel the worse do the best ... go to May 8th page & see the 30+ scores .. read their comments before getting their scores! I hope I did well though .. didn't feel confident on everything but I felt much better than May 8th test!

Good Luck to all of us 🙂

So by orgo heavy... does it mean that even going through TBR books and preparing that way wouldn't have been helpful =/

Hey,

I remember reading your posts for May8th.. What did you end up doing differently to prepare for this exam?

🙂

I felt like an idiot.
PS: Great section. I was surprised. What I studied reflected what was asked.... I was so surprised that I became too cautious... I didn't want to make a stupid mistake (used to get about 3 per section wrong that would have push me into a solid 11 range - as in I look at the question when checking and ask myself 'really?!' and my stress level def increased my chances of overlooking something). And then I didn't realize that I was going too slow... and had to guess on about good 4 questions. At that point I was SO disappointed. Obviously I guessed on some weird qs...but in addition I guessed on random 4...which might have totaled up to -10 qs.

Verbal: Was fine... and ran quite parallel to the AAMC's. But towards the end I got stuck on the passage... and time slipped again and another 3 q's guessed. And since VR is always kind of up in the air for me.... I was really crapped out. At this point I talked to my mom and expressed how frustrated I was with timing and guessing. I wanted to see how bio was before walking out.

BIO: Actually I don't think bio content was hard. It was something to think about b/c it was just a little weird. AND omfg that long a** orgo passage. Are you serious?! Comparing all of that?! If I didn't have to compare so many things I wouldn't mind the length... but for that kind of a test... way too long. I should have left that for the end.

Point being: I didn't submit my test and felt so crappy about it b/c I actually knew what I was doing. Now I get what people say about not having confidence and already losing 1/2 the battle. (I didn't b/c I took the test before and I felt like I was the dumbest of the bunch) Without confidence you become too cautious which wastes time.

How to remedy this?: I was planning on taking the test July 2nd. I know it's soon.... but I can't wait anymore. Need to apply this cycle b/c I already took a year off and can't really go back for masters or post back b/c a bit too much money. :// My plan is, continue with hyperlearning books but cutting the time significantly. Maybe watching some videos on out there topics with wikipremed? (right? I heard that's a good video base).

What I found useful for the exam: I compiled 1 page study sheet for all 4 sciences. Memorize-ables. For ex phy: I wrote out mirror/lens equations. numeric values for angles for sin and cos, fractions and their decimal rep (like 1/7 or 7/8 or 5/6 you know stuff like that), common formulas, units. What this did for me was 1) Reassure me that I do know something (you know after a really hard passage you're like wtf I'm so dumb); 2) I didn't have to think twice about formulas, especially lengthy or tricky. I wrote this out when they give you that time for the 'tour' before the exam.

But yea I feel like I just made the hugest mistake b/c the test was good, but as the same time if I guessed on so many.... I don't want to be stuck with another meh score esp when my gpa is ... well... not that great.

So uhhh imma give my review:
I actually didn't think the test was that bad. I hesitate to say that in front of people like xXsynapse and catchmoresun, but I felt relieved after the test. I took 3/22 and I felt much worse after that one (because I really wasn't prepared)
PS: This was fair, one passage made me pretty frustrated, but overall an average PS section: Prediction: 10-11
VR:I actually really liked this VR. I enjoyed it and felt it like I leaned a lot, except for passage 6 🙁 Prediction: 9-11
BS: Yeah, it was difficult, and that one orgo passage seemed a bit too tough as well as a couple of the orgo discretes, but the bio passages were fair and mostly manageable. I feel there will be a generous curve for the orgo. Still feel pretty good about some parts, like I prepared the right way this time. Prediction: 9-11.
Overall: Predicted range: 27-33 Expected range: 28-30. I think I got either a 28, 29 or a 30. All in all, I liked the test as a whole, but that one orgo passage probably pushed it too far.

Hey,

I remember reading your posts for May8th.. What did you end up doing differently to prepare for this exam?

🙂

Nothing to be honest .... went to bed at 9pm ... woke up at 6am got ready & left home by 6:45am .... arrived at testing center at 7:15am FULLY AWAKE ... & that's it!! I asked people to pray for me & wish me luck ... I literally gave up on studying for this thing! I completely depended on my LUCK and PAYING ATTENTION to what I'm reading!

SpringButterfly I saw your posts too on that thread...so you got a 19 and didn't do anything to prepare for your next test? Did you just feel like that score was a fluke?

I'm actually mad at how straightforward PS was. I had a mini-freakout right in the beginning, so I wasted time, and yet again, had to rush through questions that were simple. No real telling how I did on it.

I ran out of time on verbal and basically guessed randomly for P6 so that I could spend time on the simpler passages. VR was definitely reasonable, but VR isn't my strength, so I still probably scored in the single-digits. :/

.... I didn't think the orgo was that bad actually. That one passage I'm sure we're all referring to was pretty time consuming to follow and track, though, so I did have to guess on a bio passage that probably would've been easy.

I'm not applying this cycle, so I'm not really stressing over possibly having to retake, though I'm obviously hoping it won't be necessary. This was a learning experience. I'm now more familiar with the procedures and the whole vibe surrounding it.

I did the trial out of curiosity. I liked it, as sociology and psychology meet many of my interests. I actually knew some things offhand, so mama might be taking a trip to Amazon.com some time soon. lol 😛

Overall impression: meh

I had a power outage in the middle of my exam. I was already pretty nervous and the outage kind of messed with my timing even more, so I ended up voiding. Does AAMC give refunds for minor power outages during the exam?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was difficult (mainly the Bio portion). I usually don't have trouble with orgo but this was pretty brutal. I couldn't even follow along with some of the Bio passages.

Would retaking the exam in August be too late if you want to apply this cycle?

If they don't, just do a charge back. Im in the same boat for the last mcat I was forced to void. AAMC can be absolutely ridiculous in accepting refunds for some reason when it is blatantly the testing centers fault or theirs.

I guarantee they won't. I'd do a charge back ^

August would be a bit late in my view.. Schools wouldn't get your score until September and by then, there aren't too many interview spots left. Although, wait until you get your score back, maybe it will be better than you think. Also, you can submit your AMCAS Application (if you haven't already) to one school for verification, and then add more once you get your score back (if you like it, and wish to apply OR if you don't like it, and choose to wait for the next cycle). This way you won't be considered a "re-applicant" to schools that you potentially would have applied to.

SpringButterfly I saw your posts too on that thread...so you got a 19 and didn't do anything to prepare for your next test? Did you just feel like that score was a fluke?

I studied for 3 months for this thing ... I'm doing a graduate medical sciences program at BU (GPA 3.93), so I'm not 100% ******ed but this test is driving me crazy!

Honestly I still believe you need 0 studying for the MCAT ... you need tons & tons of practice ... don't bother what tests you are taking, just take as many tests as possible to improve your test taking skills that's all you need ... nothing fancy but I'm not a good test taker! I don't know how I do well in my tests in school but maybe the idea of a standardized test freak me out! ... I had nothing left to do to prepare for this test .. I did everything already for the May 8th & used almost all of my studying material .. going over them again would be a waste of time!

Guess I'm in the minority--I had a hard time with PS but didn't think BS or VR were bad at all. It felt like PS tested the same concepts over and over, and one of those was a weak spot for me. Oh well!

First time examinee, thought the whole thing was less horrible than I imagined.

Good luck to all with the other elements of the app process. MCAT is just one piece. But I hope all who scored today get what they desire!

It's a possibility. I remember feeling quite awful after my first one and did decently in some of the sections.

But as the above said. That bio section wasn't something we could prepare for.

But honestly what pissed me off was the amount of aromatic chemistry on the exam. We were told out right that it's no longer on the exam and yet mysteriously two passages were all about it.

What gives?

To call it what it was, none of the "aromatic chemistry" actually required knowledge of aromatic chemistry. That's how ochem tricks you...complex looking molecules that freak the crap out of everyone, but it's about applying fundamentals.

In regards to the exam, I wrote in Canada and didn't get to start my 8AM exam until 1120AM. No joke. The registration was a gongshow. 1 by 1 people were registered at the rate of about 10 mins/person.

I thought PS was rough, based on a few questions of obscure memorization questions that I didn't put time into memorizing (ie. molecule names and the like). I know for sure I got 4 wrong. Let's hope the scale isn't that great...haha. Prediction: 10-12. Expected: 9-11

VR was VR. Other than (I think) passage 6, it seemed fair. Prediction: 10-12. Expected: 10

BS wasn't too bad. Definitely tough at some parts and it seemed like a lot more reading than the AAMCs. Also definitely tougher than AAMCs. Was stoked at how much organic there was, but the organic that was on there wasn't too straightforward, unlike the AAMCs. I was expecting to crush BS but guess that won't be happening unless the scale is as bad as people are saying. Prediction: 10-13. Expected: 12

Hope everybody's exam goes well. Go out and have some cold ones now!

THE PLACE WAS HOSTING THE MCAT FOR THE FIRST TIME. STARTED SIGNING PEOPLE IN AT 8 am. EACH PERSON TOOK THEM TEN MINUTES. I was supposed to start at 8...started my exam at 11:30. Got home at 5pm. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY RIGHT NOW.

Is it true we have to wait two days to register again?

Tough bio section eh? And yes, we have to wait two days.

So is anyone else signed u for a retake? Not feeling so confident in my bs score, particularly orgo. Probably will take a couple weeks off and do some light review in case the worst happens

Got a flat on my way to my test center city (night before the test).
Got about two hours less sleep than I anticipated.
Nevertheless,
PS - I know that I missed one. Everything else I was confident. 13-15 (AAMC average 14.4)
V - Seemed about the same as the AAMC tests, so I'll predict my average 11-12 (AAMC average 11.7)
BS - Skipped the passage everyone is talking about, finished with 15 min to spare and was able to take my time and fully understand the passage. Everything else was alright. Essentially guessed on one. Probably a little lower than my AAMC average, so 12-14 (AAMC average 14).
So 36-41 predicted. AAMC average was just over 40.

That's a pretty bold assumption lol

Yes, the orgo passages were insanely difficult. Much more challenging than any BR passage. But, from what I've seen, recent Mcat exams have one challenging section with generous curves so don't be dismayed if one section feels much harder than normal.

Tutoring Physics, Gen Chem, and O Chem for 2 years certainly helped 🙂

Haha I would say!
But any tips for physics? I actually haven't taken the mcat, but I struggle with physics so I need advice! Even equations you felt were absolutely necessary to know!
