I got an interview invite today, but I just now came to the realization that the school is out of my price range and won't be attending the interview... I know I just shouldnt have applied, but I did.
yup!.... so excited!.. i'm spending the whole weekend there before just to get a feel for it haha...

Set up my interview for Oct. 25th! They also said that they had not yet begun booking November interviews.
I just had my interview yesterday. I will let you know that you have ZERO to worry about. This was a very very conversational interview. My interviewer literally sat me down for 25 min and we just chatted. It was my first interview so I was nervous.. but he made it seem like no big deal.
I also have to mention that it seemed like all of the students there were constantly freaked out. We had lunch with two 4th year students and they couldn't wait to get the hell out of there.
After my interview at LECOM next week and then UMKC on the 15th I'll be a better judge though.

Do you mean that the 4th year students couldn't wait to leave lunch or the school? If the latter, did they speak negatively about their experiences?
I got that same vibe from some students at my interview at NYU. I think that every person will have a different experience in dental school, and what is really difficult for some people, won't be as hard for other people. And NYU is a large school so you have to go into it with a lot of independence and drive. I went to NYU for undergrad and I learned quickly that most of the time if you want to succeed, it's in your own hands.
Leave school. They were great during lunch. Super excited to talk to us and share their experiences. One was applying for Ped program and the other for residency. They actually said they can't wait to get out of there and that NYU is signifianclty harder than other schools.
I asked them if they thought they were ready and confident to go out and practice dentistry and they said "NO" emphatically.
I felt like NYU tries to differentiate itself with its large class size, research intensive background, and by being in The City.
I disagree about their class size being only a strength. It has its obvious weaknesses which I'll mention later. I agree that as a collective whole, having a larger class size is a benefit by bringing many diverse minds for unique research ideas and by bringing people in with diverse goals in community outreach and continued education programs. But individually, each student will have to fight for one of a limited number of open clinical chairs during certain times and will not be able to get to know every one of their classmates because of each class' sheer size. This may or may not be important to you.
It appears to be a very strong research school and has collaborative investigations with NYU's nursing school which I think is located within the same building. I thought this was interesting.
NYU's costs for instruments (rented) and books was raised from $4,985 to $6,010 to $12,131 for Class of 2012-2014, respectively. NYU is notorious for its total cost of attendance. This is probably important to most people.
Two of the dental students jokingly generalized that many (not all) students chose NYU because they were either reapplicants or had no other choice. These two dental students were also the ones who mentioned how it can be difficult finding an open clinical chair during certain peak hours. They were also harped by other interviewees about what they thought of NYU's tuition and they said they would prefer not thinking or talking about it. 😀
The positive things that they said was that they felt very clinical competent as fourth years because NYU required high quotas for certain procedures in order for them to graduate. They said they enjoy The City but one of them said that as a dental student you won't have much time to have fun outside of school if you're a normal student and plan on passing your classes. They also said NYU prepared them well for the boards, although I think this should rely more on the individual's responsibility rather than on the school's.
NYU also has international and nationwide outreach programs in addition to its immediate New York community outreach programs. But so do many other schools.
I think in order to be a good fit for this school, you'd have to love The City lifestyle, thrive in being one of hundreds of other students, be self-initiative because there's less intimacy between the staff, the students, and between student and student, be willing to bear a lot of debt after graduation, and enjoy the company of very diverse people.
I don't think you have to be research inclined although there are many opportunities for research and NYU does encourage their students to pursue research.
I don't like to mention facilities because this is one factor that really shouldn't bear much weight in the selection of a dental school. Having new facilities is nice in the way that old Catholic churches look nice. If there is no substance within the staff, the board's direction of the school, or curriculum, a beautiful facade is a meaningless investment. Everyone's opinion will vary about each school's philosophy and I don't think I'll share mine. 🙂

Got interviews at U. Kntucky, VCU, Boston U, NOVA. Not from my favorite school NYU
A lot of what you said is true but you can also argue it from the other side. Being in a large class really never bothered me. I was always able to get my questions answered and even got a lot of private attention from professors when needed. It just takes one email to make an appointment with whichever professor you want and they will make themselves available to you.
Also, all the students aren't together all the time. We only have around 15 or so students in each Anatomy lab and they even open the Anatomy lab after school for students who need more time with the specimens. As far as the bench lab goes, yea there are a lot of students in there but each row has about 3 instructors and I would say there are probably 15 students in each row.
And lectures aren't always packed either. A lot of the students don't really show up to class because all the lectures are on itunes.
To be quite honest, the class size has never been a problem for me and even though we're dental students (other students and myself included), we always found time to enjoy the city. A lot of the students get together and go out on Fridays and weekends. You can easily find time to enjoy yourself and be a good student at the same time.
As far as the cost goes, I think NYUCD is worth it. There are a lot of ways to pay back your loans. If you keep thinking about your loans, you will drive yourself crazy. They have so many options like Income based payment etc...so I don't think that it's something we should really stress too much about. I've never seen a dentist file for bankruptcy and if you know someone who has, it's probably because they didn't make good business decisions, not because they didn't have enough patients.
NYU also has had 100% of their students pass the boards the year before last year and only 1 student failed last year. I don't think that the responsibility to pass the boards should be but solely on the student's shoulders. It's up to the school to provide the education and provide in a way that will prepare the students for the boards. That is one huge advantage of going to NYU. They alter their curriculum every single year in accordance with the things that have changed on the boards. In fact, they even give their exams in same format as the boards and try to ask the same types of questions. This is what I was impressed by most.
I know NYU has some negative points too, but so does every other school. But overall, I have been very impressed by NYU and would highly recommend this school.

Finished my NYU interview today 🙂! Overall a pretty positive experience. It was very chill and nice. The tour was a little repetitive, but the facilities are really good and modern. Living costs may be high but its also NY so maybe that's worth it? Anyways, I left with a pretty positive impression. Good luck with your interviews everyone!

I don't see why we wouldn't hear from them by December 3rd...either acceptance rejection or waitlist. I think it would be strange if they just left us in limbo 🙂 and I would just call them and let them know but since you filled it out there, I'm sure they put it in the right file and everything.

So I had my interview on Oct. 25th...I was going to email my interviewer expressing my thanks...except I'm not sure how to get a hold of him...I believe his name was Dr. Ray (Sad part is I'm not positive on this anymore....=/) Does anyone know who I am talking about? And if I can't find out who exactly it was, should I just email the admissions department? Thanks!

Does anyone know how the area around NYU is? In terms of transportation, flooding, etc.. since the hurricane sandy hit and I have never been to new york, i wonder if the aftermath of sandy is gonna interfere with the interviews?

I interviewed there and LOVED it. The staff and students were really nice, the facilities were beautiful, and I got the sense that students enjoyed being there. I also reached out to dentists who have graduated from there recently (2010), and they told me a lot of positive things about their experiences. Everyone mentions that they have a strong focus on clinical preparation, which is very important to me. The only downside for me is the cost of living in NYC. It's not the tuition of the school that is so scary for me... cost of living is 🙁 Besides that, I think I'd be happy being a student there.
