so is it safe to assume if we haven't gotten an e-mail all hope is lost for UMD?

Absolutely not! Both of my student interviewers interviewed prior to December 1 but didn't get an acceptance until mid January. They were both OOS. Plus, there are many of us who have multiple offers and we can only go to one school. So once some people decline the admission offer in favor for another school they feel is a better fit, then more emails should go out.

okay, thank you! Also, I'm in state.

Like other responders have already said, don't give up hope! Many of the students getting offers are also entertaining offers from other schools so it is not possible for everyone to accept. Remember you were selected for an early interview meaning that UMD feels you have what it takes to complete their program. Both of the Docs I shadowed went to UMD and neither of them got accepted until February.

I applied to UMD and didn't even get an interview, so remember you are already on their "good" list! Try to stay positive!!

Does anyone know how easy it is to get in-state after your first year?

Is there already a Maryland Facebook group out there?!?!

Thanks for starting a page. It Won't allow me to join.

Do some people have a list of all the clinical requirements? Any 3rd or 4th year dental students

Third year student dentist here at the University of Maryland DDS program. Third year is half (maybe 2/3) treating patients and half (or 1/3) academic. There are minimum clinical experiences needed to graduate, and there are also benchmarks that need to be passed to get through third year.

I can only give a rough estimation of clinical requirements because if you get a good grade on a denture, you get more points than if you got an "ok" grade. Also, to get As takes more points than Cs. These are total experiences done over the last 2 years or 6 semesters.

Filling about 45 cavities.
Periodontal cases: 6 (Patient with gum disease who you treat for several months and verify that it gets better).
Partial or full dentures: 5 arches (top and bottom denture would be 2).
Crowns and bridges: about 13 units (Crown is 1 unit, a bridge that sits on 2 teeth and replaces 1 missing tooth is 3 units).
Root canals: 2.
Extractions: 14.

There are a bunch of other smaller clinical requirements like 4 oral hygiene instruction "Clinical Skills Assessment" where somebody watches you teach somebody how to floss, or a crown you do on a plastic tooth and get it checked off.

This is stuff is irrelevant for the first two years though. First year is 80% academic 20% working in on plastic teeth. Second year is 60% academic 40% working on plastic teeth.

Some of the best students in our class got acceptance letters as late as mid July.

It's hit and miss. My friends that got it after first year said it was easy. My friends that still don't have in state tuition say it's hard. Having a big Maryland paper trail helps. Some things that come to mind:

- Maryland voting
- Maryland job.
- Living in Maryland before school.
- Maryland car.
- Maryland taxes.
- Maryland volunteer position.
- Maryland bills.
- Maryland drivers licence.
- Maryland military record.

I had my Maryland status challenged because I did undergrad in Idaho, but when I had paperwork showing I lived in Maryland when I entered the military, it was a golden ticket. Sorry I can't give a simple, "if you do this, you will get in state" type of answer.

Was anyone able to fix the link to the Maryland Facebook page???

Does Maryland require a background check through Certiphi? I couldn't find anything in their acceptance packet.

Is all hope lost if you haven't received an II from Maryland yet?

OOS, I'm asking for a friend...(I'm a med school applicant, shhh! 😛)

I believe her stats are: 3.3 science/3.4 overall; masters degree in microbiology; 2 publications; currently working as a research coordinator at a Big 10 school.

DAT is bio 18 gen chem 21 orgo 22 read 25 pat 21 math 18
Academic avg: 21

She seems to be a pretty competitive applicant. Her GPA is a tad low and so is her bio DAT score considering she has a masters in microbiology. Let it ride and let time work it's magic.

Thanks for your insight! I don't know much about this whole dental app process and I don't know how to be comforting when I don't even know what the stats are on these post-dec interviews.

I really want to ask some current maryland students some questions through facebook. Since we don't have a fb group, can someone post some friendly names of people who are willing to answer some of my questions. Thank you!
