Has anyone heard anything back after accepting yet? Like background check, etc?

I can tell you exactly why the students I spoke to suggested I choose another school. This is summarizing a few points made by current students:

Many of the professors are ex-military and have arrogant and “I’m better than you” demeanors. They do not care about how you are doing in the class.

The school is focused on research. Personally, I enjoy research, but I was looking for a strong clinical school rather than a research school. Students told me they receive very little guidance in lab, so they never know what is expected. They could spend a whole day on a project and then turn it in just to find out they did it all wrong. I get that learning from your mistakes can be a good thing, but I value clear guidelines and quality teaching.

If you want to teach yourself the majority of dentistry, go to San Antonio. With the new curriculum, DS1 and DS2 are getting less lab time because of the new schedule.

This one is the worst: I was told some professors will sign off on projects done incorrectly instead of actually giving valuable feedback. So, your “success” depends on who is grading your assignment rather than actual skills and performance. Subjectivity will be everywhere, but again I value feedback and constructive criticism.

These are honest things I was told by students at San Antonio, and of course if somebody can refute these statements, please do! I think it’s important to gather facts before making such a big decision. I asked the same questions to students in Dallas, and received much more comforting responses about how they do things in Dallas compared to San Antonio.

Smaller things I personally didn’t like about San Antonio:
The school and clinic are far away from each other as opposed to in the same building. The atmosphere was clearly very competitive and it seemed like the students didn’t really like each other. The person giving the tour said San Antonio was not her first choice, but it was the only school that accepted her. You have to purchase a new computer from the school (even if you have a brand new computer). I just didn’t get a good, genuine vibe here.

As for your friends getting grilled, it all depends on the student and faculty you are interviewing with, so I guess be prepared for anything! My faculty interviewer didn't smile at all throughout the interview, but I stayed calm and answered the questions with my great big smile, full of enthusiasm.

Hello! Thanks for sharing what was said. I'm a current DS4, so I know how the school, its ideology, and its expectations really well. I'm also a student interviewer and am really surprised they (probably a DS3, we'll get to that later) told you that stuff. We'll go through everything you've listed.

Q1. "Many of the professors are ex-military and have arrogant and “I’m better than you” demeanors. They do not care about how you are doing in the class."
A1: Yes, many of the faculty are ex-military and they may have a particular way of teaching, but they absolutely care about how you're doing. I'm by no means top of the class, and if it wasn't for some of the military faculty that teach the right way and expect work out of you, I wouldn't be attending a top AEGD this summer. I get this question a lot, and honestly this school takes a heavy lean towards doing dentistry the right way, and making sure you know what you're doing and following the rules.

Q2: "The school is focused on research. Personally, I enjoy research, but I was looking for a strong clinical school rather than a research school. Students told me they receive very little guidance in lab, so they never know what is expected. They could spend a whole day on a project and then turn it in just to find out they did it all wrong. I get that learning from your mistakes can be a good thing, but I value clear guidelines and quality teaching."
A2: Yes, we are interested in research but its not debilitating. You can participate if you want, but you don't have to. I didnt. The best part is that we are at the front of the pack when it comes to Evidence Based Approach to clinic. As soon as a new paper is released, we implement it in clinic and it's really great. If you look at the clinical requirements for DS3 and DS4, which is clearly more than what some AEGD residents are getting experience in, you'd see that we are overwhelmingly a clinical school. On top of that, the opportunities that are provided to broaden your scope are great. you can do implant placement, molar endo, pre-prosthetic surgery, and all the rotations are clearly clinic oriented. Guidance in lab is enough to give you the idea of what's going on and there are at least 3 faculty in each section of the lab all the time to answer any questions you may have. Being independent in professional school is being confused with no guidance. It's there, just ask for it. Guidelines are clear: there's a lecture before every lab session going over exactly what is expected and how to do it.

Q3: "With the new curriculum, DS1 and DS2 are getting less lab time because of the new schedule."
A3: Absolutely not true. With the new curriculum first years are in the lab for restorative starting in the spring. When I was in pre-clinicals we didnt do a restorative prep until Fall DS2. More practice!

Q4: "I was told some professors will sign off on projects done incorrectly instead of actually giving valuable feedback. So, your “success” depends on who is grading your assignment rather than actual skills and performance. Subjectivity will be everywhere, but again I value feedback and constructive criticism."
A4: This is somewhat true, but for a different reason. You're setting teeth in dentures according to a mannequin. How accurate will it be? Not very. So they sign off on it. A lot of what you do in pre-clin is so different from treating patients that the overall goal is to give you an idea. In other pre-clin courses, like operative, the faculty are much more strict. Class 2 preps are overall harder on a plastic tooth than on a person, and they grade you hard too. So when you get to clinic, you're ready.

Q5: "The school and clinic are far away from each other as opposed to in the same building. The atmosphere was clearly very competitive and it seemed like the students didn’t really like each other. The person giving the tour said San Antonio was not her first choice, but it was the only school that accepted her. You have to purchase a new computer from the school (even if you have a brand new computer). I just didn’t get a good, genuine vibe here."
A5: Yea that kinda sucks, but having a new building is great! You must have been talking to a DS3, they are like that. Our class is really cool and we all help each other out. Honestly, its not the AdComs fault, its really fate that brings a class together and it really depends on everyone's class. If its one thing that I do agree with its the computer thing. Its really expensive and kinda a drag, but I still have it so there's that.

Now my two cents:

While I was in pre-clin and at certain times in clinic I've really REALLY STRONGLY disliked being here. All of the work, and the studying, and the late nights, and and the constant criticism. And there are a lot of days that made me feel like a champ. All the cool stuff I get to do, CAD/CAM, implants, a lot of surgeries, its all worth it. I love this school, and its given me so many opportunities because all of my faculty and professors were invested in my success. I've learned so much, and I really wish I was there with you on your interview day. I tell my group every time that I wouldn't think twice if I were accepted here again. The requirements made me a better clinician and I'm grateful for everything this school has provided. If anyone has any questions, please let me know!

Supposedly it came out February 2nd already. I was the last interview group (Jan 29) and considering they take a week to make a decision on your application after your interview, I didn't expect to hear back that soon anyways

@KingOfTheNorth How are you sure that they sent out acceptances 02/02? It makes sense if they did, but I find it kind of strange that we're hearing about this two weeks after they sent them out.

Do you have any clue as to when they will send the next round? I spoke with admissions and was told around every two weeks but it has been three now.

Again, I can only disclose some information. I also need to remain anon. As I find out, and given the green light to post, then I will

Patience is a skill I wish I had. It’s been a month already since the last round went out I believe.

I was wondering since the most recent round has been sent out, are there still seats available?

Yup! Joining the 2022 class!
Im having trouble finding the FB page though

I'm not allowed to post a link, so try searching UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry Class of 2022 in the FB search bar.

So is it pretty safe to say I’ll be receiving a rejection soon? I haven’t heard anything and I’m pretty sure they’ve basically filled their class. Have they sent out a larger round of acceptances like UTSD did early this month or is that still to come?

I did. It seems beneficial if you want to get a head start in the didactics. Don't think I'll be doing it though, trying to milk the most out of this summer break as possible before classes start.

Okay, I don’t need a summer break since I’ve been outta school for awhile. Let me know if you decide to do it! I haven’t heard anyone else getting an invite yet...

I haven’t received an email on that either... I’d be interested in it though.
