I think we are all bitching a bit too much about working conditions and the dropping salaries. Isn't the profession of law saturated? Don't lawyers come out of school with a ton of debt? But then again, don't lawyers also end up makeing 100 - 200K a year later on in the profession?

The days of earning 150K with a sign on bonus are certainly over but their are opportunies on the horizen that will allow us to do more like possible prescribing medications. Maybe when Lipitor goes OTC, maybe it will be the start of a class of medications that you will have to go to the pharmacist for a prescription. Obviously, you neet LFTs when on Lipitor, will this lead to us being able to write orders for lab work? I certainly believe so.

Their will be more opportunities for us soon. Stay strong my friends.

I just cant see the FDA approving a statin as OTC. Unless of course a lot of money changes hands. However, I could see Viagra as a possibility.

Therefore, I will remain pessimistic in my view of the future of pharmacy🙂

The biggest hope that I see for saving retail (in the future) is therapeutic interchange. Something that we are uniquely trained for and proves our value. Also, it something that the big chains might actually push for since generics=more profit. But I can't see MDs giving that away so easily.

I think you are dreaming if you think this will be done in retail pharmacy.

Hence, my pessimistic outlook.

Somehow they let people other than MDs prescribe yet a pharmacist isnt qualified to do anything more than give out flu shots.

I don't see Viagra going OTC anytime soon. And I agree about statins as OTC just doesn't make sense, you need the doctor to diagnose you and monitor your lipids. It is not a medication you can use to self treat, not even close. Viagra maybe, but with all the contraindications, I just don't see it personally.

Oh to be a new grad again. Two weeks on the job and he is an expert....funny chit!

Fantasy land is not a good place to be, come back to reality...chain retail pharmacy as a profession is over, there is nothing remotely professional about it.

Dream on, pal....this will never happen as long as AMA is around.

I can't stand all the whiny pharmacists in this forum. I know once I'm a pharmacist I would never visit sdn again and I often wonder why all these debbie downer pharmacists still come on here. Could it be that misery loves company? I see it in all the forums. When I was in highschool the level of obnoxiousness on these forums were WAAAY less than they are now. Yes a huge recession hit EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING HARD, but at least working a pharmacist job brings home a livable wage. Some of these pharmacists need to go get 30k a year jobs like most americans and find out what real problems are. I don't care if you went to pharmacy school or took out a ton of student loan debt. No one deserves anything better than anyone else. Get off your high horses pharmacists! And after you do that maybe you should put in some more effort at work, because me and a ton of future graduates are coming for your jobs! And we're going to TAKE THEM! We're like the langoliers, you're hearing the buzz we're coming and we're getting closer and closer! 2014-2015 it's on! munch munch munch

Lipitor will fail in its OTC bid just like Pravastatin and Lovastatin. The FDA is not going to approve OTC status for statins because the average person cannot self treat with it.

Alternatively, you can make positive posts to balance the negativity. 🙂

A statin is OTC, cough*redyeastrice*cough :meanie:

I thought that was pulled? Cool joke though 👍

The product that was pulled was a specific adulterated product which actually had a Chinese pharma statin added to it to enhance potency. The natural RYR still exists at every pharmacy I've worked at, and still contains I think lovastatin (not sure) that actually was synthesized by the organism.

At least, this is what we were taught

edit: ah. heh the joke went over my head as always, i figured he was being legit >.< XD

Simmer down noob. You have no idea what you are talking about.

No one deserves anything better than anyone else.

You got it Castro, uhh I mean Mr. Marx, or should I just go ahead and call you Karl?

Another brilliant sub-new-grad... probably going to D'Youville or whatever the f--- that school name was...

👍 The kid most likely will not understand the insult but still....well played.

will the profession turn around?

i guess it depends how you define it

to me, talking to various people in the industry, there will be other avenues opening up for pharmacists, but this will be more for experienced rph and not sure if a new grad will be able to get these type of positions

personally, all I can say is that my email still has numerous offers from various areas, but they require clinical training (something I dont even have)...so i still think in the next couple years, if you can move, finding a job will be OK, but I dont know after that

I can't wait till you lose your job to a D'Youville graduate. Both of you.

I doubt any of them are going to be taking my inpatient clinical pharmacist position. I feel pretty darn secure in my position and absolutely love the variety and challenges the job offers!😍

So again, simmer down noob.:meanie:

wow, clinical pharmacy, what a holy grail you got there... do you do MTM too...

Also not worried about losing my clinical specialist position to a new D'Youville grad....

I don't know. If a new grad is willing to be paid 40 dollars an hour to remove double Tylenol orders you might have some trouble on your hands. 😍

I'd do it for 30 at this point, just ta get my foot in the door. Hell the 20s are starting to look good.

Are you geographically limited?

No. Am in the process of trying to get to another state by licensing. Have you ever done that? It takes a lot a time and alot of money. Just to get your license verified for another state in Florida takes 2 ta 4 weeks the lady told me. Last time they said 7 days. Not to mention that you have to wait for your ATTs from the other states, which is any where from 6 weeks ta god knows. And, lets not forget the study materials, cause heaven forbid you fail the test and have to wait another month.

You have to pay 3 different organizations when you apply for a license. It's like legal rape. The board of pharmacy wants your money-there are different fees for each state, the testing center wants your money and the organization that puts it all together, nabp wants your money, not to mention additional fees such as the $25.00 fee for your freakn license ta be verified.

Then of course when you get an interview anywhere these days YOU have ta pay for all of that (gas, motel, etc). Because since there are so many pharmacists, the employers can take there time hiring who they like at your expense. I haven't even gotten into moving expenses yet, or the deposit someone would like on a room or an apartment. Any suggestions?

getting different licenses is a huge expense....one cost me around 1 grand after all fees and stuff were factored in

its a long process with lots of paperwork, mailing stuff, and waiting on govt employees to get back to you (which takes 6 weeks)

just be patient and continue to look

nothing wrong with taking a low paying job, but just make sure there is some opportunity to move up (in other words NETWORK with people)

dont want to get in a situation where you get stuck

keep fantasizing. pharmacists are not prescribers nor will they be. their scope is limited. do you know all the rare genetic diseases or anything that can affect the liver? that will also open pharmacists up to liability. i.e. giving a medication to a patient who shouldnt be on it.

woman pregnant on lipitor doesnt tell her dr she got it from the pharmacy.... baby is all messed up..... think about it.

will pharmacists be prescribing lipitor to help protect from alzheimers as well? will pharmacists be running tests to see what A.L.P. the patient has to determine if lipitor is right in that case? maybe in the most simple case MAYBE....

but given that you have CVS minute clinics with a nurse practitioner in them, i dont think you will see a pharmacist prescribe anything, in fact they would prefer the pt sees the minute clinic bc then there are additional charges to the patient to see the nurse practitioner as well as pharmacist to dispense. double charge.

walgreens and cvs wont let you get that

I absolutely love students. they always seem to have everyhting figured out. I find it most amusing to see the new grads who have it all figured out and are going to climb the ladder get a dose of reality in the real world. especially once they start working retail. You start seeing the deer in the headlights look. Takes a few months before reality sets in and they realize what the job is like and what the next 40 years will be.

Fortunately for me, the horrible reality set in and I realized that retail may totally suck, but working for my current boss (not a retail setting) was the worst thing I could do for my career. Now I am happily applying for jobs I never thought I would want and anxiously awaiting getting paid money to talk to insurance companies!

If anyone knows a new grad or student that needs a quick dose of reality, I know of a job that will be opening very soon...
