hello ,

I am a foreign medical student who plan to join a residency program in the united states, here in my country they prefer any physician who is certified from the american board despite the training program itself, so .. is there big difference in the quality of training between these programs?

I mean, don't all these programs have the requirements that the american board ensures every american's board certified physician must meet these requirements ?

I am asking this question because there are programs out there where it is easy for me as an international student to join them, rather than other programs that strictly for USA citizens , and I am afraid that IMGs friendly programs wouldn't care much about the quality of training.

While some programs may be stronger than others, I really think that most peds programs train good pediatricians here in the U.S. Part of the outcome of course is your responsibility and your own motivation to learn, but in general there are a number of fantastic programs 'off the radar.'

I try to stress this fact to any medical student: be willing to look where you'll be happy, not just the 'top' rated places.

I agree with Stitch. There are many Pediatrics residency programs that are quite good. Remember that all accredited Pediatrics residency programs must fulfill requirements imposed by the Residency Review Committee. "Quality measures" are hard to define. One could look at the American Board of Pediatrics exam pass rates for their trainees, but this might reflect the test-taking abilities of their residents (or even their prior knowledge) and not necessarily the quality of training they received during residency. But I would look very carefully at programs that have unusually low pass rates, since you ultimately want to be Board-certified and should try to optimize your chances.

If your main objective is to go back home as a US board certified pediatrician, then any ACGME-approved pediatric residency should do the trick.

Granted, some people judge residency programs based on the number of foreign medical graduates they take, but not all foreign medical programs are the same.

A lot of people focus on board pass rates, but it's really up to the individual.
