The “right” to healthcare

If there is a right to healthcare there is a right to housing, food and clothing. Nothing that costs other people time and money can be a “right”.

By that definition, nothing can be considered a right. Clean air also costs people time and money.

I'm not saying healthcare is a right, just that that particular argument is weak.

This has come up repeatedly over the decades. Sure, people who have no idea what they're talking about speak of a "right to healthcare" without actually defining what they mean. They are probably thinking it means a right to government paid healthcare, or government regulations guaranteeing availability of "affordable" health insurance.

The conservative wing of SDN translates this into "enslaved doctors". Has anyone in a real position of power advocated for a law that forces an individual physician to work for free because the patient demands it?

There is a reason Republican held Congress and Presidency didn't repeal Obamacare. Despite the rhetoric, government funded healthcare is viewed as a necessity on both sides of the aisle

I agree with this.

No one is forcing a doctor to work for free. That's not a thing. But there should be a mechanism that someone in extremis can be seen, whether that is through good will or government sponsored care.

Not having clean air is generally incompatible with life. I guess not so polluted air is debatable....

We need this. Not for all.

I think calling it a "right" is a poor choice of words. Rights exist regardless of the state of the nation. Freedom of speech, the press, etc. can exist even if the country is in economic ruin. I think it should be framed as infrastructure. As in, the greatest nation on the planet should be able to provide healthcare for it's citizens. Same vein as a strong military, roads and bridges, police and firefighters, public education, etc.
