The doctor shortage has nothing to do with AMG over IMGs.

IMGs (new-age FMGs) are not even able to look at most programs AMGs can look at, and they accept that fact.

Even the ones with 250+ are going to sub-par programs filled with IMGs already, and some times even the attendings and PDs are IMGs themselves. They'll probably fit in great. And "superior patient care", that's a joke, its all the same in primary care fields.

Theres no point in debating a false dichotomy; there are more than enough patients for both AMG and IMG, any resident can attest to that. The reality is that hospital greed/profit and the desire to keep residents subdued as slaves to the hospital program is keeping the number of positions artificially low. We all know how overworked hospital residents are in terms of admitting and seeing patients as well as how long it takes for patients to get f/u appts after d/c. If patient health were the priority all residency positions would be doubled immediatly to lighten the load on residents and to benefit patients. IMO any doctor who has passed all the exams and jumped through all the hoops is qualified and should have the guaranteed opportunity to gain a residency spot to see patients.

A little late to the party here, but I have some info regarding how I and my classmates are doing in SOAP.

I applied GSurg, obvs didn't match, then applied to 30 surg prelim. I had my 1st phone interview at 11:45 am monday, 2nd one that afternoon. This am I heard from program #3, who then called me again this evening saying they "might" offer me a spot tomorrow.

There are 14 of us from my school in SOAP. Chatting w/ the dean of students this afternoon, out of us 14, I have heard from the most programs with 3 phone calls. 8 people have heard nothing. We have a mix of specialties represented (GSurg x2, OBGYN, ERx2, Psych, IM, Rads, Derm, PM&Rx2, Neuro, Anesthesia...not sure the rest of them).

Basically, the school is worried. The dean has talked to other deans. They are worried. Word is it was just a BAD year. Way way way too many ppl for spots. And since this is only the 2nd time SOAP has existed there is still a ton of problems. Like ERAS crashing nationwide on Monday am (if some of you were wondering why programs hadn't downloaded you until late, THAT is why).

Either way, I am disappointed, hurt, angry, etc. I just want any ****ing surgery prelim spot. I have only heard from CA programs. MY OWN INSTITUTION HAS NOT PHONED ME FOR AN INTERVIEW (yet gave me a categorical interview???), YET they phoned the other GSurg applicant in my class. So my own home institution has given me a huge **** YOU middle finger. 😡

Hopefully we all get jobs. Or figure out what the **** to do next year.
 
Hey. I am applying next year. Can someone post how many surgical spots (GS, Ortho, ENT, Ophto) were available for SOAP. I am not a stellar applicant and would like to know what my options are if I have to SOAP. Thank you!!

how did you get an interview monday at 11:45? we didn't even get to apply until 1 or know we didn't match until 12.

It is against the rules for anyone to tell you at this time, be patient and the results will be made public in August, or someone will tell you on friday. All i can say, is your chances in the soap would be slim to none in all of the above if you feel you are not a strong candidate.

Also, I believe Ophtho has it's own match earlier, with urology

It was at 12 pm EST, so he was most likely in the pacific or mountain time zone.

1) I did match but feel terrible for my classmates who didn't

2) I am glad you posted this because you have probably unified us all now. Those who matched and those who didn't.... those who think the match should be AMG only and those who think it should be open to the world.... in spite of our differences we can all agree.... you are a real ***hole for coming onto the SOAP thread and telling people they deserved not to match. So strong work for that!

3) May you match into prison gynecology in rural Arkansas.

Funny, but you may have just insulted "rural gynecology" and Arkansas 😛 there are nice people in the south and they could do MUCH better than the above poster 😛

don't see why not, you have 10 to apply to whether you apply at noon or at 3 makes no difference to the system.
 
PS: Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren won... watching the new universal soldier....seemed brainless enough.

Yep, you should be able to. I was thinking the same thing actually. That's what I did in the first round. I didn't even apply to all 30 at once. I picked about 8 places, and applied to them immediately, then kept on adding my apps until I reached 30.

Couldnt sleep, the Carlsburg in my fridge looked too tasty, and I needed to chill after this long day. Im there with ya, but hope has left the building on this round when I went 0/30.

Sorry to hear, I still believe programs will contact people in the AM, too many people haven't heard anything all day!

Assuming that you did end up in X school like your tag line suggests-you may want to edit the above out as your home institution will def. know who you are, and knowing X school they probably won't be likely to offer you anything next round either. Or, maybe you are hoping they see it since they didn't give you a shot, just though I should give you a heads up!👍

Seriously I don't give a **** about my home institution. Surgery is a malignant ****-pile there anyways.
 
Man, I don't even know what to wait for.

PS: I'm having spells of numbness and not being worried at all as though everything is hunky dory. These spells are starting to worry me. And then also of wanting to bawl my lungs out.

Feeling physically sick. I know this is not going to work for me. There is no plan B.
 
I started in one specialty but went through ( or attempted to!) the match (as an independent applicant) this year to switch into another one.

I will say that the number of programs unfilled this year, especially in the areas that we'd normally expect to see a bunch of unfilled programs, is significantly less than in past years. I was shocked. Don't ask me for details, I'm not allowed to say.

I knew from reading about last year's soap that each program would get hundreds to thousands of applications per position. So I guess it's not surprising that there is a lot of radio silence.

Does make you wonder if the whole system should be revamped, though...
