Someone told me that the old pope didn't actually want the job, but they basically forced him to do it. That is crazy. Probably crazier than the fact that I'm a doctor that isn't a doctor. Nothing at 3PM.

Anyone have an answer to my previous question?

Based on the last round. You can 't get offers until the next round. Not 100% sure though

Well now you have time to alter one for surg. FM should be ok for IM
 
And to everyone who hasnt sent in their 10 applications for today... I would wait until 5 pm. As already mentioned, you dont want to waste those apps on places that have filled.

At this time I would revise whatever PS's you have and edit them accordingly. Remember, they have 1000s of apps to move through in a short amount of time... make it concise to the point.
 
completely and utterly distraught...at least there's no day gap until the next disappointing round... 0/39...

So after 5 pm EST today is when round 3 starts and we can apply to our final 5 SOAP programs? Do I have this correct?

My soap screen says next round of offers is 9am tomorrow.

nope - final 5 you can apply to starting at noon thursday.

round 2 ends at 5 - they update their list and then you pray for calls/emails to end the night/tomorrow morning.

its all laid out as to when you can send apps on the eras dashboard

Anyone know what the peds/child neuro situation is? [Its what I was initially going for, shocked at how few peds positions there were in round 1]
I got an FM position after a day of alternating vomiting and crying. I really hope everyone out there gets things to work out in the end, either through SOAP or something else. This is truly a draining process. Everyone is in my thoughts and prayers. I just trolled these boards all day since I did not want to talk to any of my classmates really.
Besides the interim period of America-bashing in between, it was really a source of reassurance [maybe solidarity is a better word?]
 
Can we reapply to programs in Round 2 that we already reapplied to in Round 1? I am not able to do so. I am only able to apply to the ones I didn't apply to before. But the programs from Round 1 still has unfilled positions.

The unfilled positions list hasn't been updated yet, so I wouldn't do anything until you know for sure.

No, you can't reapply to any program that you've already applied to during SOAP. So, you'll have to pick different programs.
 
I truly wish everybody here the best on their future careers. This has been a grueling process. I got nauseated and cried on my bathroom wall like everyone else did, but ultimately I'm kind of gestalt about this. If it didn't work out, then there is a reason for it even though I don't know why yet.

The following few years of my next career are probably going to be terrible and I know it. I'm going to be even poorer than I currently am. I already sold almost everything I own to stay alive and pay for Step 3. Starting over at an entry level job and trying to explain my reasons why I am not practicing clinical medicine, it's not going to be fun.

But you know, it's all going to be ok. I don't know why and I don't know how - but it will. I'm still alive, young and healthy. I have years ahead of me and a head on my shoulders. Eventually some hiring manager is going to realize that.

Amen and hallelujah. 🙂 At least, we will get to choose where we want to work and truly get to pick. I kinda wouldn't mind doing something super fun and mindless for a job, but of course .....flippin residencies wouldn't like it next year. jeez.

Question: With so many G-Surg Prelim positions open could any qualified candidate apply if they don't fill them after the SOAP and if not then what happens to all those open spots? Do they just stay unfilled?

At this point any spot is better than no spot at all.
 
Did you submit the one you accepted originally in the first thirty

or did you actually spend some of the first ten on that space in between 12-2 pm and get that prelim?
 
meaning they downloaded it and read it in that hour??

applying med and prelim

considering adding family at 2 pm, but was scared to spend some of the 10 apps until 5 pm when list changed again

anybody else have input on whether it was possible to match into second set of 10 at 3 pm?

I think it blows that 1 mistake, regardless of whose fault it is, seems to have gotten you blackballed as a doctor. Have you considered practicing in another country?

I have, but frankly I value my marriage and my family too much to do it.

Yea, you can apply regardless of your app. I don't think its completely unselective, nobody wants to work with a debbie downer, whiner, or lazy ass. And some can be opportunities for someone really motivated to be accepted as a categorical either there or elsewhere. I'm not sure about how well its looked at for specialties besides surgery though.

All these American medical grads who are saying they had super high board scores and didnt match into IM or FM....this makes no sense. The only thing I can come up with is they applied to way too many prestigious programs and no safety programs.

I'm an AMG who left my former residency prog (I had a PD tell me yesterday that was all that I did "wrong"). I had good grades and good scores on my steps, first try. Graduated in 4 years like it was no big deal. Had good letters. I applied only to low-tier programs in low-tier residency types (no offense meant). And here I am looking at jobs a high school kid could do, for Monday.

I am curious as to the reason(s) that prompt you to leave your first residency? I think a PD may care more abt why it happened more than it simply happened.

Wow, you must be my doppleganger cause me and you are the same. The sad thing is that in all reality patients are the ones who will suffer because as a qualified bilingual doctor I could have done a lot of good for a lot of people but instead I will be working a regular 9-5 worrying about whos gonna make the playoffs instead of what I can do to better my patients health.
 
Just as an FYI for guys who unfortunately don't match in SOAP, my understanding is that there is a system for hiring residents outside of the match. There are off-cycle positions (most certainly in IM) that are not advertised. Bronx-Lebanon hospital ctr in NYC hires ~1 IM resident/month off-cycle. Due to being off-cycle, these guys can't apply for fellowships, but hospitalist gigs are very much open to them. These positions are usually taken up by IMGs, but there is no reason why a PD would not choose an AMG over an IMG for an off-cycle spot. I only know about Bronx-Lebanon and know someone there that was recruited off-cycle after not finding a position in the scramble two years ago, but I am sure that there are programs, esp in NYC, that have a considerable number of off-cycle positions. While some of these places are not ideal - training wise, they do give you the opportunity to to sit for boards at the end of the day. I don't really know how to find the positions (i.e. what is the off-cycle alternative to FREIDA), but If I were you, I would email a lot of PCs in large, community hospital programs right after the match and ask about off-cycle positions. Hope this helps a bit.

I appreciate your concern, but my experience tells me that PDs don't care. They don't want a liability. If you have a red flag of any kind = game over, no matter who you are.

Very important and interesting info. Thank you for sharing. I know someone from last year's class who did not get anything in SOAP but got something in may as an off-cycle prelim surgery.

Also for those who are looking at what can be done after SOAP. FREIDA (and the NRMP database itself) has programs that are not part of NRMP/SOAP and they can be contacted after SOAP is over to see if there are any spots open.

Best of luck to all and remember to never, ever give up. We all came too far to give up now. 👍

You can apply for fellowship, you just need something to fill the time between when you finish residency and the fellowship. There's thousands of residents that go 'off cycle' every year as well, like for maternity leave.
 
Actually most of the programs listed as not participating in NRMP/ERAS on frieda partcipate in ERAS/NRMP. You will find discrepancies when you go to the website....I hate to blow anyone bubble but if you dont get a spot now the chances of getting an offcycle is slim...everyone talks about residencyswap which you pay for but when the positions are advetised late on this website......so please try to get a spot here if not work on improving your application and pls be realistic

I just received an interview for a prelim gen surg spot... I had two phone interviews on SOAP day 1 but no luck thus far. One of the places filled up and the other has one spot left. The interview I just received was from the pool of 10 apps I sent out today.

I got 1 offer for prelim surg at round 1 and took it. Wasn't exactly top of my list for spots but 1 bird in hand is worth more than 2 in the bush or however the saying goes.

Anyone receive an offer from an anesthesiology program and did not have a phone interview before?
 
I'm wondering if this is a sign that programs are less likely to want people who change specialties? I left the residency of my original specialty on good terms- turns out I didn't like it as much as I thought I would and it was becoming clear that it wasn't a great fit. I wasn't kicked out and all my evals were average or better. I took some time to work some moonlighting gigs, pay down some debt, save some $ and make sure I picked right the second time around. I never thought taking the time out, or making the change would be a big deal. I know a number of residents at my old institution who changed specialties and some took some time in between to moonlight. They didn't seem to have any problem.

Now, having learned that programs would rather go unfilled than have me in their midst puts a really bad taste in my mouth. Are we all supposed to know exactly what we want to do in our 20's and stay on that path without change no matter how miserable we are?

The number of spots left in my new specialty after 2 rounds of SOAP are less than the amount of digits on a normal human being. Which means I have no chance.
 
@themoreyouknow and warbux, did you guys apply for gen surg in the main match...also are you amgs or imgs

This may have been answered previously, but programs listed as 'not participating in SOAP' with empty spots, are they just committed to leaving those spots open? Or can we contact these programs after Friday?
