I know that medical schools generally favor instate residents, some do more than others.
I know that New York has an obscene amount of medical schools, however I'm not sure as to how many give a considerable amount of advantage to instate students. I've heard that many NY schools give little to no advantage to instates in comparison to other applicants, which would give NY residents no real advantage in the application process.

Are NY students better off than other residents? And how large is this gap?

Public = favors instate

Private = does not seem to make a difference where you are from

I don't know where you heard this. NY schools have in-state acceptance rates close to other states', if not higher. SUNY Upstate, Downstate and Albany have around 65% for instance.

SUNY Albany doesn't have a med school

Albany medical college is a private med school

might as well answer OP's question while i'm here....

NY has 4 state schools: upstate (in syracuse), downstate (in brooklyn), buffalo and stony brook. they are all solid well-regarded schools in unfortunate locations and mid-level average stats. Each of these schools gives preference to NY residents. While this preference might not be as extreme in some other (less desirable) states it can be very helpful.

NY also has 8 private schools and those in manhattan have the luxury of being extremely picky due to their location and as a result they have pretty high average stats. On the other hand other NY private schools have quite the opposite reputation (Albany and NYMC). None of these schools give preference to NY state residents though they might have a disproportionate number of students coming from NY because they get more applications from NY residents

Upstate and Downstate do not have acceptance rates anywhere close to 65%. I don't have an MSAR in front of me, but it's something like 30-35% of applicants get interviewed and then probably 1/3-1/2 of those get in...still higher than OOS, but hardly the advantage you get at many other states.

These numbers are old, but in 2008, Upstate had 63% instate and Downstate had 67%... Buffalo was about 80% and stonybrook 98% (for stonybrook this is the percentage of matriculating students... I don't have the stats of accepted students)

woah! hold on there. what are you talking about?? your post seems to imply that these schools accept 67-98% of in-state applicants. ummm...absolutely not!!

from the latest MSAR:
SCHOOL - % of in state applicants interviewed - % of class that is in state
Downstate - 34 - 82
Upstate - 32 - 85
Stony Brook - 24 - 85
Buffalo - 20 - 71

there is either alot of misinformation going around or you guys are not articulating your points well

no, I'm definatley not saying that schools accept that percentage of instate applicants. I'm saying that about 67% of accepted applicants are from NYS, which is just isn't that much of an advantage considering the population of students that apply...

sorry if I'm confusing people! 😕
