is how much time they give you to study for Step 1. There are some schools who give like 4 weeks and that is not nearly enough time. It doesn't matter if the classes you had right before that is supposedly the most high yield. That's b*ll****. The most important thing is to actually be on a computer doing whatever the best question bank is nowadays or reading first aid.
 
um what is the first two important things?
 
Isn't there a study out there saying giving over four or five weeks doesn't increase scores? Not saying that is true for everyone, but...

those were my guesses too. although i'm not sure having more than six weeks really helps most people. i haven't taken it yet, but a lot of people both here and IRL have told me that they were merely treading water past that point.

So how long do you recommend for step 1 studying?

One of the schools I interviewed at gives 8 weeks off, but a lot of the students study for 4 weeks, take the test, and then have a 4 week vacation
 
I also don't think it necessarily helps to have more time off to study for step. My school gives MS2's about 3 weeks of exams/finals, and then we are expected to take step within 4-6 weeks. It sounds terrifying but our averages have been really high for the last couple of years so I'm hoping that will hold true for my class as well (and that I don't end up being a low-scoring outlier).

Exactly the type of quote that I said you shouldn't believe.

1. Location. Where you train is where you will have your best shot at residency which is where you will have your best shot at fellowship which is where you will have the contacts to help you get the best job you can.

1a. Women. Totally blew that one. People get about 20-30% hotter if they work in your hospital. Think of the possibilities.

2. Reputation. Helps a ton.

You don't know what it does for my ego that I am big time on a random internet message board that is aimed at people who should be about ten years younger than me.

I'm like the college junior who comes back to high school to visit his teachers once a month.

Or the second year medical student who still goes to his college frat parties.
 
What can I substitute for 1a? I already have my SO.

Funny, I'm just about to do this for the first time since my HS graduation.
 
4 weeks is plenty of time to study for step 1 if you have been keeping up with your schools curriculum. In my opinion anything more than 4 weeks would be a bit excessive.

USC had a 225 the class before mine which got about 4 weeks to study for boards. My class had a new curriculum and we got about 8 weeks. We got 244.
