  1. Resident [Any Field]
Hi all, been coming to these forums for a while, never posted before though... Today however, I couldn't resist posting on a very controversial topic as I recently got my hands on a list of where MGH/BWH residents most frequently apply for cardiology fellowships spots and thought I would share... I was surprised to not see Mayo or Northwestern... thoughts??
Program
Beth Israel
BU
BWH
Cedar's Sinai
U of Chicago
Cleveland Clinic
Columbia
Cornell
Duke
Emory
Johns Hopkins
MGH
Mt. Sinai
NEMC
NYU
Penn
Pittsburgh
Stanford
Texas Heart/Baylor
UCLA
UCSD
UCSF
UT Southwestern
Yale
Wash U

Its about as expected. As for not seeing mayo on the list, probably just has to do with the fact that people are reluctant to move to minnesota, even though mayo is an amazing place....

Sorry, but I'm not overly impressed with Harvard residents or where they're applying. The top places are the top places regardless who is applying. Would this list be any less significant if you had said that you recently found out where the LSU residents were applying? Mayo might still would have been omitted for the above mentioned reasons.

I posted this earlier in the year, it's the USN&WR rankings in Cards...I thought I'd post it again to compare:
1) Cleveland Clinic
2) Mayo Clinic
3) BWH
4) Johns Hopkins
5) MGH
6) Presbyterian Hospital NYC (Columbia/Cornell)
7) Texas Heart Institute St Luke's Episcopal
8) Duke
9) Stanford
10)Barnes Jewish (Wash Univ. St Louis)
11)UCLA
12)William Beaumont Hospital(Royal Oak, Mich.)
13)NYU
14)Cedars-Sinai
15)Lenox Hill Hosp., NY
16)Emory
17)Washington Hosp. (Wash. D.C.)
18)St Francis Hosp. (Roslyn, NY)
19)Univ. Pennsylvania
20)UCSF
21)Vandy
22)Univ. Michigan
23)Univ. Chicago
24)Christ Hospital, Cincinnati
26)Inova Fairfax Hosp., Falls Church, Va.
27)Robert Wood Johnson Univ. (New Brunswick, NJ)
28)Abbott Northwestern Hosp. (Minneapolis)
29)Univ. Arizona

BlackNDecker, the title of my post was probably incorrect as what I meant was most competitive or harder to get into than 'top'...

I agree with the fact that having harvard residents apply there doesn't necessarily make them the best, but I do think it makes them more difficult to interview/enter... as the lists of candidates from the other top east/west coast probably look about the same... with some exceptions based on location..

I gotta tell you that I've found the USNews World report rankings somewhat useless, as it looks like they probably reflect quality in terms of patient care and outcomes, but not necesarily in terms of research or fellow education (after the top 10-15 of course)... As someone who is applying into cards this year, I am trying to come up with a list based on where the best education is, not so much on where grandma will get better from her MI...
Overall and without considering location, I think I would rather match into BU, UPitt, Mt Sinai, Tufts-NEMC or UTSouthwestern (all of which are not listed in the US News World report rankings) versus Lenox Hill, St Francis, Robert Wood Johnson, etc... (no offense to people from there)...
To my knowledge no such list exists...

Hard to believe UTSW is not listed😕

UTSW and Emory take ALOT of their own...bonus if you're a current resident.

US News and World Report is basically useless. For Example:

UCSD (not on list) - top ten in cardiac NIH funding. Deputy Editor and Editor of JACC faculty at UCSD. Previous and current past presidents of AHFS.

UCLA - Harbor - Some of best imagers in country(not on list)

list goes on.

Exactly my point golytely... didn't mean to sound snobby before but with 600+ applicants for your average 6-8 spot univ program... I want to make sure I at least applied to the places that 'should be' in a top 20-30 list but are not... such as UCSD, UTSW... not that their interviews are easy to come by!! :scared:

The top places are the top places regardless who is applying.

It depends on who made the list and what the list was made for.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ignacio and golytely. The consideration of rankings (of anything for that matter) depends entirely upon the methodology. The US News and World Report hospital rankings are designed for the patient-consumer. Features that are desirable for the patient-consumer do not necessarily align well will desirable characteristics for a training program. I'll give you some examples of desirable features for training programs:
lots of autonomy for residents/fellows
lots of hands-on experience for residents/fellows
high acuity cases (usually translates into higher death rates)
good research (does not always translate into better patient-care)

Certainly, there are some universally good features for everyone:
a good physical plant
excellent nursing
access to cutting edge technology
