I recently stumbled upon this link:http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_career_is_most_respected

Some quotes: "They [doctors] think they're smarter than all their patients (and they aren't). Although they are smarter than average, their professor doesn't require too much real thinking or problem solving"

"The average engineer is MUCH smarter than the average doctor"

"I personally respect veterinarians a lot more. It's harder to become a vet (more competitive) and they make a LOT less money. Even nurses hold a higher position in my mind. They may not be quite as academically gifted, but while doctors are sitting around stroking each other's egos, a nurse is saving the patient's life."

....

this is wikianswers...

it's kind of like being offended by an article written in the national inquirer..

I can almost assure you that guy got rejected from med school or had a bad experience with a doctor and now feels the profession as a whole is House.

Last time I checked, majoring in MechE was a hell of a lot harder than majoring in psychology/sociology/neuroscience/biology/whatever the latest pre-medical trend it.

Even though I think that there are many quality doctors out there, I do understand what the writer is talking about. They are not disrespecting doctors, but disrespecting the attitude that most doctors have after going through the med school/residency process. Just because we will strive and persevere though one of the most brutal career trainings, it does not by any means that we are in fact smarter than patients.

Many people do not respect doctors because a lot of times, doctors don't respect patients. Of course this attitude is a product a soul draining training and the American healthcare system (herd patients like cattle, $$$$). We just have to work harder to not let these things jade just when we are physicians.

Yeah, but compare a 4 (or even 5) year engineering degree (which can get you a job after done) versus Premed PLUS medical school (which won't even get you a job except residency) and then you've got a discussion.

Or, compare it to engineering graduate school. 4-6 years of busting your ass 60 hours a week, only to MAYBE get a post-doctoral job that pays $50,000 a year, then fighting for a tenured professorship.

The entire premise of this thread is dumb. vokey, congratulations at being another self-conscious pre-med that's only interested in medicine to impress other people. H...H...HOW DARE THEY! HOW DARE THEY DISRESPECT THE NOBLEST OF NOBLE PROFESSIONS - MEDICINE (PEACE BE UPON IT).

Nobody is liked by everyone. Their will be loud mouths that spread negative propaganda about every profession. Doctors, as of late, have simply gotten a lot more than they used to get. Part of that is that people can now more freely (anonymously) express their opinion via the internet.

Where does that put us engineers-turned-medical students? We must be super-geniuses!

I haven't trusted any online answer sites since they got the wrong answer to "how is babby formed".

What % of engineers want to become tenured professors?

So you're saying getting a Ph. D. is harder than getting an MD?

You think MD's don't look for post-doctoral jobs and tenured professorships?

most MD PhDs will tell you that the sense of accomplishment after finishing their PhD is greater than that when they finish their MD.

As far as the whole engineering thing goes I think you're comparing apples to oranges. To get a more fair comparison I think you would have to compare the difficulty of an undergraduate engineering degree vs med school. Since pre-med is exactly that, "pre", which doesn't mean ****.

Oh and these "answer" sites crack me up anyway, this is one of my faves:

honestly - who cares?

People badmouthing a profession on the Internet?

ROFL ... have your vet and your engineer take care of your heart attack then jackasses.

this person makes a great point, md's only treat people, whereas a vet might have to treat a horse, cat, and dog all in one day!

No, nurses aren't as academically gifted, and yes, I am academically gifted. 😀

Uh, actually, doctors are among the most respected profession, both here in the US (where they are just behind firefighters):

And in the UK, where they are #1 (although this one is from 2002):

Way to fail, wikianswers.

Not to knock firefighters, but thats obviously due to 911. IMHO, there isn't a more important profession than the physician. Whether or not that correlates to prestige, I couldn't care less.....okay yes I could, but still.

Farmers are more important.

Does every patient maintain a healthy weight, excercise 3-5X a week, eat the dietary suggestions only, refrain from alcohol, tobacco, or other vices, take supplements, relieve stress positively, etc? No.

You have different patients which require different care modalities.

I thought he was just being sarcastic 😉

hahahahaha! This man speaks the truth! And I like it.

Honestly if you are going into medicine for repect pick a different field. Im not saying people in general dont respect the training and career, but certainly medicine as a whole isn't viewed ( at least in the US) as the most noble profession.

You've obviously never seen Fat Pets on Animal Planet! 🙂

Hahaha, we all suck. Me included for actually reading through this thread.

Point taken, but conceivably, almost everyone has the capacity to grow their own food if they absolutely needed to. That is certainly not true for being a physician...

Exactly. You need teachers to become physicians.

Wait a minute...

Asians hold doctors to the highest esteem... and then some.

Ok, then I raise you pre-med, plus medical school, plus neurosurgery residency (6-7 years) busting your ass for "80" hours a week for equal pay, while trying to get some meaningful research so you can have a position in academia. But this is just getting silly and stupid

And I agree with the sentiment in the second half of the post. Patients don't like doctors? Screw 'em. I don't do this for their approval.

Wa wa. So what if not everyone respects doctors? Yeah, I'll have worked hard to get to wherever I end up, but it doesn't mean that everyone needs to bow down to me when I walk into a room. We're not that special, we're not entitled to the love/praise/respect of every other human being just because we chose a difficult career path.

Meh.

i don't know... you ever meet an alcoholic horse? (insert family guy style scene)
