The University of Texas at Austin: Interview ROUND 3!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought everyone was really nice also. I interviewed with Dr. Combs and a 2nd yr student, they were both fairly informal and made it seem more like a conversation (although he did ask a couple of tough questions  ). I can't believe I forgot to ask when we would hear back

I'm scared too, as a nonresident. RachGator, were there any out of state students at your interview? I think there was one other person at mine in March.

Also, does anyone know if UT prefers students that are certified pharmacy technicians? After the interview I got a slip saying that all accepted students must be certified before matriculation. 😕
I don't remember that. Is it a long process to get certified, should i be freaking?

did they say when they are going to make their decisions by? i hope everyone here gets accepted!! i cant wait to meet my classmates for next year!
I think they will be meeting in early and late May. Lets hope for good things :luck: ! They seem to pick good people. The current students were nice and a lot of fun.

it is a pretty easy process. i studied for about 30 hours (over a week) and took the test. i ordered a book off of amazon--i will look for the name. 😀

Wow after seeing how many of the interviewees were certified techs, I'm kinda down, don't think I'll make the cut. UT seems like they stress tech. experience. 🙁

I was not a pharm tech when I applied. 👍

i'm not a pharm tech and i got accepted. and i don't think you're required to get your tech certificate. you can complete your 200 hours through internships right?

that is what i got from the little green sheet

Thanks vicky and utpharmdude, it's a bit reassuring know that ppl have gotten in without certification. 👍 These few weeks will take forever to go by, I can't imagine what it's like for the feb. and march groups that still have not heard back.

Hey Rach, I think i met you today 😉 Hope all goes well! 🙂
Who are you UTPharmDude? I am really curious. Were you one of the tour guides? Either way, the Saturday 2:20 tour was really informative. The student lounge people were cool too. Did they pay you guys? 🙂

hahaha that is sooo true!!!

All of the interviews are over, so now we just have to wait! How does everyone think they did this weekend? I had really nice interviewers, and it seemed to go well 🙂

I had a really good time as far as interviews go. I actually re-met a fellow interviewee when i went out to dinner Saturday night! I know no one in Austin and I ran into a person I met. If the people running the interview and the others interviewing were any indication, UT will have a great group of peole roaming the building next year. I hope I am one of them (and you guys too). I just can't let myself get toooooo excited 🙂 . Best to all!!!!

Even though I pretty much KNOW that I wont hear back from them until end of may or early april... i still anxiously check my email every morning 🙂

The countdown begins... :luck:

Do they inform us like they did with interviews (an e-mail followed by a letter)? Or just a letter?

I heard that they have already filled half of the slots. The other half will be left until the end. I heard that we should be hearing from them in about 3 weeks. That is a ridiculously long time. Im so tired of waiting

I think through email also, one of the earlier posts states how they were notified by email of their acceptance.

They e-mail u right away... and then u get a letter in the mail as well!

I know its really hard to wait ... but the postive thing is --- it will be over soon 😀

They've already filled half the slots and only 2 are on SDN?!

well 3 actually... 😀 but that is still REALLY few! i am thinking (i have nothing but my own thoughts and last year's stats) that a lot of the people that they accept are from ut so they probably arent on sdn.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE !!!! :luck:

3, sorry... 😀 I just can't believe half the class has been filled already! :scared:

Hey all, I have a tough decision (finacially) to make this week, and could use some advice. Best case scenario, I get into UT, move to Austin in early July and take genetics. If this doesn't happen, I need to take Calc 2 for UCSF. The thing is, I won't hear from Texas until May (as you all know 😕 ), and the teacher teaching calc 2 for the first summer session is great and the teacher teaching cacl the second summer session is not so great. Do I spend the 500 extra dollars to take Calc with the good teacher when I won't even need it if I become a Longhorn, OR do I save the money and time, wait and hear from Texas, and, if I don't get in, take the icky professor second summer session? Seems so trivial but, at this point, I am broke but want to do the right thing. I haven't had calc 1 in 9 years so I need a good person for calc 2. Help!
PS-I have to make this decision by the end of the week 😱 . The other option is to use UF as my back up school. I want Texas so bad. Choosing between UCSF and UF are great options I am really thankful for but i am not "feeling" either one.

I have a similar situation (somewhat). 😀 If I get into UT, I'll also need to take Genetics in the summer so I'd have to move to Austin in a few months. 😱 Can someone enlighten me as to how the summer sessions at UT work? How long are they and are there multiple sessions? Or can you take the class online or through independent study? I looked at the schedule of classes online and couldn't tell what the specific dates were, only that most of the sections meet everyday.

I might totally have been given the wrong info., but I called in late last year and was told that sci / math courses have to be completed by the end of spring sem. 😕 Maybe another case of misinformation being given out by staff.

i believe that you can finish up your classes by the end of summer.

however, registration for summer and fall classes were the past 2 weeks and i believe that in order to take summer school here at ut, you have to first apply as a ut student which i don't know if you are starsweet.

as far as classes go, it depends on the particular class if it's going to be the first session of summer, the second session, the whole session, or a 9 week course.

if you're planning on taking any school at ut in the summer, i could call admissions asap. i know a friend of mine that goes to ut and wanted to take summer school at a&m for transfer credit had to apply to a&m first and get accepted.

In my interview, I mentioned this situation and was told I could take Genetics this summer. They said they would put any outstanding prereq info in our letters. I told them I am will to move early.

just wondering but why dont yall just take genetics at whatever school you are at right now?

i am taking physics this summer at a&m

only half spots remaining! that is pretty bad!

We know half the spots go to UT students anyway. Besides, we're not even close to being certain how many spots remain.

Unfortunately, I live in a small town a few hours from the closest university. The gross majority of pharm pre-reqs I had left are lower division classes so I could take them at the community college (which was actually a great and inexpensive education source). Everything else I had from UF. Genetics, however, is an upper division class and has to be done at a universtiy. The cost of traveling all over the state and subleasing would be about what moving would cost. On the plus side, I could acclimate (my allergies and myself) to Austin and be comfortable with the place befor Pharm starts. I just have to get in 🙂 .
Luck to all :luck:

The closest university to me that offers genetics only offers it once a year in the spring. Because it is a requirement for Bio majors, the class fills up quickly and I had no priority since I already have a BS degree from another school. When I brought up my situation to the registrar's office, they said they couldn't overload me into the class because of the strict lab requirements (only a certain number of students are permitted in each lab section). So I figured I would just wait to take it in Austin, especially since taking it would be overkill if I didn't get into UT (UT was the only school I applied to that requires it). Also, the class here has a lab component which I don't think UT requires.

I took undergrad genetics at NC State as part of my masters degree in another area.

It is a great course, and has a lot of material about the mRNA and tRNA that you learned in basic biology with more detail.

It is not too bad, and rather fun! I have not taken o-chem but I bet the introductory undergrad course in genetics is much easier.

I heard the adcom should be meeting sometime next week to go over another round of applications, and then having their last meeting in late May to make final decisions. Even waiting for only a couple of weeks is going to seem like forever! I don't know how you people who interivewied in February can stand it 😱

Waiting is not fun thats for sure! But having UH as a backup helps A LOT! Both schools are great and I know I'll be happy at both places --- just waiting to finalize everything though *sigh*

I know that UT is where I really want to be because the stress-induced weird dreams about getting in or not have started. I wasn't nearly as nervous about anything else. I keep dreaming of Austin.

Does anyone know how the last two meetings get broken down? Do they save all the non-residents for last? I am hoping late next week brings good news :luck: .

Rach, do you think we will hear back so soon? I figured it would be atleast 3 weeks before I hear anything back. Although I did have a nightmare that I was accepted and accidently declined by checking the wrong box lol. 😱

I have no idea when they will get back to us but I think they are meeting early next week and then like 3 weeks later for the final time. I have no idea if this meeting is the we really liked you and you are in and if the final one is the go through everyone else meeting or if the committee just does half and half. All I know is my tummy hurts. I am out-of-state so it makes it all the more nerve wracking because the chances are smaller. GRRRR.

Man, my grammar is on the fast track to Suckville.

I know how it is....I'm waiting on UF. I probably have better chance of being struck by lightening than being accepted as out of state there.

Amith, As my dad says, "Keep the faith." UF has a large program because of all the satellite campus locations. I know a few people in state who haven't heard yet either. Besides, you may get Texas as well. If so, which would you choose? It sounds so strange but Austin reminded me so much of Gainesville, FL. It had a small town feel like G-ville but with the benefits of a city.

Like others in this group, I feel so blessed to have really great choices. I just was looking for a "feeling" of comfort in a place and Austin has felt the best. I made the mistake of letting money decide undergrad and don't want to go where I won't feel excited.

I hadn't even thought about choosing between UF and UT, have been mainly worrying about getting into just one of them  But I would most likely choose UT, it's close to dallas where I'm from, and it's by far the best place to live in tx!
