The Waiting Game

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good luck to all of you waiting to hear back.👍👍 I applied to SM in global health and population and heard back Friday. This was my last one and was quite agonizing to wait. I was sleep deprived for sometime 😴

But beleive me, although it is thrilling at first, the real agony starts after you hear from them becuase you have to choose between schools.
For me it comes down to JHU, Columbia and Harvard..
Compared to others Harvard is pretty expensive and being an internationl student with limited funding, it is NOT an easy decision to make,😕 no matter how much I'd like to go there 🙁

Anyways good luck y'all! Relax and take a deep breath!!!

Congrats Geeran! I have applied for the SM2 in Global Health as well and I am still waiting. Actually your post on Friday is the one that made me nervous haha.

Would you mind telling me when was your application mailed by SOPHAS?

I was accepted by JHU (MPH program) and Columbia as well. But I think Harvard is my number 1 choice. Well we'll see. I have seen people discuss in others posts here how the Global Health department is not that strong compared to other schools but from what I have seen on their website it seems pretty fine to me.
Good luck on making a decision!

Congrats Geeran,
I think JHU MPH program is more expensive than Harvard's the last time I checked out, and by about 11,000 for tuition fees. (JHU 51,000 while Harvard 39,000 approx). I didnt check for Columbia because I didn't apply there.
Am also an international prospetive student accepted at JHU but anxiously waiting for Harvard.
Btw, harvard is the only school I understand that gives loan funding to international students without requiring a co-signer, which I really hope to get.
Goodluck on your final decision!

Thanks totful and good luck on Harvard to you! I hope you'll hear back soon!!!

I think, like me the first time, you have misread the JHU tuition statement.🙂 It says 10, 344 per term and for a 5 term course, it is 52, 000 approx. So the total tuition for 2 years comes to 52, 000 ( I think). Whereas in Harvard it is 38,000 per year and the total for a 2-year course adds up to 76,000 approx🙁 You can correct me if I am wrong. I got the same idea about JHU first until my father pointed it out to me

True that about Harvard giving loans without a co-signer. I am just scared about taking a lot of loans and being in debt for a long time. Have to make a decision soon though 🙂

Oh,,OOPS!! Sorry if I made you nervous! Didn't mean to, I thought it'll help people who are anxiously waiting becuase I know how it felt like to wait..hahaha

My application was mailed by SOPHAS around Nov 9th but did not get a login to myfinaid until 16th Dec. Well, people have differant opinions on HSPH GH department. Most, if not all of them are NOT in the program so they can say anything.haha
But I have been in contact with 2 current students and also attended the Info session last fall. All I got was positive feedback from the students. And also something I noticed was the very informal, relaxed prof-student relationships. Which I really liked. It did not feel like a tensed, necessarily competitive envioronment. Most students were very friendly and helpful.

I hope this helps! and..if you got into both JHU n Columbia, I'd like to think that you have a very high probability of getting in! Good luck!!! 🙂🙂🙂

Hi Geeran,
I think the Harvard and JHU MPH programs are one year each. Or were you admitted into other programs?
http://www.jhsph.edu/student_affairs/financial/tuition/index.html (JHU) and

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/student-life/student-billing/tuition-and-fees-for-2010-2011/ (harvard).

Goodluck on your decision!

Thank you so much! You actually made me feel better. Now let's see what happens on Friday.

JHU's program is a one-year, five-term program of 89 credits. Each term is 8 weeks, and the first term begins in the summer. So, to get an MPH from JHU you pay $52,000.

http://www.jhsph.edu/bin/c/o/SampleScheduleFT.pdf

Harvard only requires 42.5 credits and is a 9-month program that costs $37,230:

UNC has been really slow, so I wouldn't worry. I didn't find out until a few weeks ago and I applied early.

Best of luck!

Hey guys,

Did anyone of you apply for Fall 2011 for MPH? Any luck so far ?

👍

Hey thanks for the clarification! I actually applied for the 2-year Master's of science (80 credit) program at both universities, Not MPH.

According to the JHU statement the total for MSPH ( 4 terms) is $42,000. But at Harvard it is around that amount for one year plus the relatively high living expenses. ( you can still correct me if I am wrong)
So I think we confused each other becuase we were referring to two differant programs. Sorry!! 🙂
Anyways thanks for the information!! I still have not decided :/ Uggh!!

For those waiting on HSPH, the dreaded Thursday night has arrived (on my time zone)! Ugh let the stress begin.
PS: I actually called and I know a decision has been made in my file. But apparently the lady who answered the phone said that my answer needs to be processed and they will have all answers out within the next two weeks. Mmm does it take two weeks to process my letter. Hopefully not lol. I didn't have a good feeling about her tone of voice. She sounded like she was thinking "you should probably be hoping that your answer comes later than sooner, only if you knew". Geez, now I am analyzing the tone of voices. I think I have become crazy.

At least a decision has been made! I emailed HSPH and was told "your application is under review and you will know in the next two weeks" Perhaps I should have called for more detailed information, but I'm not holding out hope about hearing from them tomorrow. I am not sure how much I should read into a one-sentence email but I feel if a decision had been made they would have told me.

I would hug you if I could. 🙂

When did you email them? Because your application can be under review today and a decision can be ready the next day. For example, mine was under review last Friday and today the status has changed. So you never know.
I wish they would tell people over the phone. Why are schools so secretive about admission decisions? If I find out via phone or email, I will be sad/ happy either way. Maybe they don't want people crying over the phone lol.

Hey I have an anecdote for you: So back in January I contacted Johns Hopkins to see if they had received my school transcripts because it was missing from their website. Anyways, the lady had the most somber tone and I felt for sure I must have been rejected judging from the way she sounded. It turns out the exact opposite was true, I was notified of my acceptance 1 day after the final submission deadline! So moral of the story is admissions office ladies just have naturally somber voices. Don't let it get you thinking about your own admission status 😛

I emailed them earlier this week. I'm not optimistic considering the past two Fridays I've been disappointed. Oh well, I've gotten into some great schools, so I shouldn't be disappointed if it doesn't work out.

Hugs all around!

Hey Ambicious..
ditto what Intlhealth2010 said! and I have a very close experience with HSPH. Last Thursday I got so impatient, I decided to call admissions office. They asked for my name put me on hold for 1-2 mnts and checked. And the guy said "You will be hearing next week" and I was soo anxious I politely asked "should I have hope?" The guy who answered said in the most dissapointing tone and a slight tongue click, " Ummm..I don't know, I am not allowed to tell you that" and my heart just broke into pieces. From his tone all I understood was rejection.

But hey..the next morning by the time I woke up and showered..the decision was in my inbox and it was good news after all! and did not take a week either!!
So keep your fingers crossed, thier tones MEAN NOTHING!!! hehehehe🙂

I know how thursday nights feel like and I wanna wish all of you, who are waiting to hear back from HSPH, a good night's sleep and a happy friday with an HSPH acceptance in your inbox!!!

Good luck!!🙂🙂🙂

Haha, I have been refreshing my email AND the Forum page.

Still waiting as well. Comforting to know I'm not the only one obsessively standing by for news.

I'm right there with y'all! Refreshing email and forum. Good luck to everyone!

I just called the admissions department at Harvard and asked if they had made a decision on my application yet. They said the review process has just begun and that there is no decision yet. I applied to the Department of Society, Human Development and Health. It looks like the SHDH department is still reviewing applications.

Hope this is helpful!

For all of you still waiting on UNC...

I called this morning to check on the status of my applications (MPH and MPH to PhD) and they said that they are meeting on Monday for review. My application was complete in early Nov so I'm not sure whats up... Im guessing I might be in the middle ground pile.... If youre on a deadline with other schools, you can request an emailed decision...

Good luck everyone!!

I just called the admissions department at Harvard as well, and she said I should not expect to find out today...that I will have to wait for one to two more weeks. Ugh!

I actually called again too. And apparently things vary depending on who I speak to, great. I am so tired of this. So now I am being told that my application was still under review when I clearly heard yesterday that a decision was made. So yes for me there is no way I will get an answer today she says. Great. At this point, I am just going to pretend like I never applied to the school (i.e: stop calling and thinking about it) and make a decision based on where I have already been accepted. This is way too stressful.

Another update after contacting JHSPH by phone today: I was told by the admissions office that I should have heard something by now, so she forwarded me to the department of international health- who told me that the SBI track is taking longer than usual this year because they received so many more applicants than they are used to. She wasn't sure what to tell me, because my application is still being reviewed along with everyone else's. So...more waiting in my future!

The wait is getting ridiculous. This doesn't just affect us it affects everyone on the waitlist of the other schools we have been accepted to. If I knew I was rejected from Harvard (or accepted, little chance of that happening) I can commit to a school, send in the deposit, and let the rest of the schools know I won't be going. Then someone else can take my spot. But of course that can't happen because Harvard is taking their sweet time.

Good luck Y'all!
I am waiting till some of you post accpetances here so that we can celebrate together on this forum.

I still obsessively hit refresh on e-mail and forum pages. I think I have done it long enough for it to become a habit. It is really hard to stop doing it!!
Don't stress, have good hope!!

🙂🙂

I also called and they said we should know by March 10th, which sounds about right if they are meeting on Monday. So do they normally snail-mail the decision, but you can request an expedited response via email?

From what I've heard from people who've applied in past years, the rejections are sent out via snail mail and I have a scholarship deadlines coming up in March so I just didn't want to chance losing it holding out to hear their decision

arggg Im literally going crazy waiting 🙁

Good call. Yeah, I got an extension until April 1 from Columbia, but I still want to know asap. Looks like the UNC epi PhD program is sending out email rejections if grad cafe is any indication, but I'm not sure about HBHE. Of the one MPH and one MSPH to PhD student I have talked to there, both didn't find out until April (but both were ultimately accepted). I think they heard via email, with a snail-mail packet that followed.

When I checked my application status on SOPHAS under the school decision, it was showing as "On Hold". What does it mean? Did the admission commitee review my application? Do I need to call the school anbd enquire the outcome?

Has anyone of you have the same experience ? Please share if any.

Anyone applied to the SM(80-credit) in Epi at Harvard and haven't got a decision yet?

Hey everyone. I was wondering whether columbia MPH for HPM has already sent out acceptances already? lol

I got into usc mha for full tuition and into dartmouth, but waiting on columbia.

lol

waitlisted for harvard sm2 epidemiology 🙁 though I haven't heard of anyone else getting waitlisted, so that makes me feel slightly better (by a fingernail).

does anyone know how big the waitlist is and historically how many people they accept?

Anyone else still waiting to hear from Columbia? I'm not feeling very good about them anymore, but I'd still like to know. Ugh!

Yeah, I'm still waiting to hear back from Columbia SMS. My GRE scores arrived super late, so I'm not surprised.

How late is very late? They had my application completed according to their system on 12/3.

is anyone else still waiting on Harvard? 😕

I'd really love to have a decision (good or bad) from them so I can end "the waiting game" and choose a school to attend in the fall!

sigh, the thing is I can't simply write Harvard off. I honestly would strongly consider their program if I were to get in. this makes the wait even more difficult because until I know from them I won't be able to fully commit to any school.

Has anyone heard yet from Hopkins for MHS in Epi?

Last school...come on!

Constantly checking the Hopkins Application portal, I hope I hear soon. I applied for the MSPH in the Population,Family and Reproductive Health Dept....
