I feel stupid asking this here, but my dad (and my brother) are making me feel like absolute crap saying this over and over again, especially now that it's sept. 30 and I've already submitted my VMCAS app and it's too late to add any more schools, but do you guys think applying to 8 schools is too few? They think I should apply to 15 at the least, and keep bringing it up, over and over again, and won't leave me alone. It's not that I'm a particularly bad applicant (I think I'm pretty average, actually), but since applying is such a crapshoot, they're of the opinion that the more, the better, despite the fact that most schools I didn't apply to accept very few out-of-staters anyway.

We had a person on the UF admissions board talk to our prevet club and he said the board actually thinks its a downside to see more than 10ish schools. Makes them think you dont care where you go and are just trying to apply to as many as possible and hope you get in one. Now I cant say this is the same for every school but just my experience.

I only applied to Mizzou (cause my husband didn't want to leave his job...though now he hates it!) and got in as an in stater. I'll always have a teeny amount of regret for not trying to get into CSU though...ya'll should apply to Mizzou! There's a pretty decent number of OOSers that we have in this class.

Eight sounds fine to me. I don't know if it is true or not, but some people on here have suggested that applying to too many schools may actually work against you in the eyes of adcoms.

Thanks, guys--this really did make me feel better. And they are schools that I think I have a pretty good shot at getting in (or at least, as good as anyone else).

What's so special about UPenn Vet... 😕Why have so many applied there and so few applied to schools like TAMU? Its so expensive and they still take 51% instaters. Is the "Barbaro Story" the reason for so many applicants?

My reaspons for applying to Penn?
- I have the prereqs for Penn (not so for TAMU, WSU, Oregon, and others)
- They accept 49% OOS - that is a HUGE percentage compared to other schools
- They have a phenomenal small animal case load; I believe I read the largest of all the US vet schools

So no, it's not the Barbaro thing for me - I'm not even a LA person!

I applied to Penn primarily for the strength of its equine program. I'm sure Barbaro was good publicity for them, but they've had that reputation for a long time.

Most people don't apply to TAMU because they take only a few, very well qualified applicants from out of state. Also, they have some unusual prereqs (animal nutrition, tech writing, communication)

As sheltergirl said, they have the most lenient pre-reqs, are ranked #4 in the country, have a fantastic reputation and take a large number of out of staters.

3) Tufts
4) Davis
5) Western

Good Luck, all y'alls! :luck:

I thought I'd bring this thread back since I hadn't seen it before...maybe other people haven't either...

As for A&M, I have a theory that since they pulled away from the VMCAS and now only go through the TMDSAS, out of state students tend to be discouraged from applying. That's TWO extra apps just for one extra school. I looked at their stats compared to the other schools to which I applied and A&M is the only school with over half of the applicants from in state.

It's true for me. I totally would have applied to A&M if it didn't mean a whole additional application. I also might have applied if I could have seen what the application looked like without having to register to fill it out. I didn't want to start something (in a way the school could see) if I wasn't sure I'd finish it! So I just didn't apply. I was kind of sad about that, but I guess it worked out ok for me in the end anyway.

There seems to be a bunch of new people on SDN-welcome! I thought I'd bump this thread back up to keep track. Thanks!

I only applied IS at OKSU. I didn't get in because my GPA is *blech* and my experience is *ehh*. I'd go further into detail, but I think that would belong on another thread. In short, I wouldn't have gotten in anywhere else so I'm glad I didn't waste any money. I hope to apply to more next year... or the year after that?
