The "Where Should I Go on Vacation?" Thread!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have you ever been to New York? Supposedly, everyone has to visit NYC at least once.

I'll go to NYC next year when my cash barrel is filled more. I'm not down with spending $200/night for a crap hotel.

I should go to Orlando....never did go as a kid. Go on all the lame rides and such....pick a fight with Mickey....mmm....good times.

Listen to some Jimmy Buffet songs for inspiration. There's a Margaritaville in NOLA, but you just missed Mardi Gras.

I've always wanted to go to Rome. How about Hawaii?
Skiing in Colorado?
Cabin and fishing in the Ozarks?
My parents went to Dominican Repulic and had a good time at a resort.
Been to San Diego once, I had a good time - zoo, Sea World, boat ride, tour of aircraft carrier.
I've never been to Disneyland 🙁

my next vacation will prob be Hawaii.
my girlfriend wanted me to go to Romania to visit family...not quite my idea of a vacation unless we get to travel Europe, which we don't have time for (yet).

I was kidding about Amsterdam....I'm not going overseas...haha. I don't have $2k extra to plop down on airfare. I will in a few years when I get more established. Hell, I still live in a trailer down by the river.

San Diego moved to the "contender" list.

Yeah, but Romanian/Ukrainian/Russian (you know that area...) women are the most beautiful on Earth. I'd hit up Moscow....the wife's Russian, I could probably swing that in the future.

Also, if a location has one of these, it gets a free upgrade on the awesomeness factor.

San Diego or skiing in Colorado.

my dad said stay at the Hotel Coronado in San Diego, but didn't want to spend the money.
Stayed at a Holiday Inn or something right on the water, it was nice. get up, look at the water/boats, etc.

Haha...I'm actually not old enough to rent a car. You need to be 25...which I won't be until May. I can give people Morphine....but I can't handle the responsibility of borrowing a car for a week. Wow. I guess some allow you to rent with a surcharge....$15/day (****ing ridiculous). I'm pretty sure that's discriminatory pricing...

stay downtown San Diego, bunch of nice restraunts and bars (house of blues) with live music. walking distance to the pier. bunch of dudes on bikes with carts to give you rides as well.
hotels might have free shuttles to zoo/sea world?

maybe they have Segways to rent or something.

Bull! You don't have to be 25. I rented a car over Christmas. They'll just charge you more than a person who's 25+.

If you think you can make in Mexico City, go. It would be a cheap trip. Just don't do anything stupid. You don't wanna rot in a Mexican jail.

Bull what? I clearly stated it costs $15.

Hmmm....I'm actually more afraid of being stabbed to death...

I'm hopefully going to the Riveria Maya (I believe its ~1 hour south of Cancun--very nice, all inclusive), Hawaii, Colorado, or Virginia/Washington DC (to see family). I'm really hoping for the first!

Have you thought about California, NY, or Vegas? Alaska is supposed to be beautiful.

Ok. It looks like San Diego is the best option thus far.

Let us know when you make up your mind so that we can assist you with your travel plans.

Here's a list of beaches. Maybe someone can give you the inside scoop.

By the way, how do you hyperlink a word so that when you click it, you're redirected to that web address?
Nevermind. I just figured it out.

Good night everyone and peace out, yo!

Ron Burgundy: Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.
Veronica Corningstone: No, there's no way that's correct.
Ron Burgundy: I'm sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don't know what it means. I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.
Veronica Corningstone: Doesn't it mean Saint Diego?
Ron Burgundy: No. No.
Veronica Corningstone: No, that's - that's what it means. Really.
Ron Burgundy: Agree to disagree

Consider San Antonio. There's a Sea World, a Six Flags, a decent zoo, lots of awesome food, AND a Dave and Buster's. Downtown has the Alamo (not very impressive to tell the truth) and the Riverwalk, which is gorgeous. It's only an 90 minutes away from Austin, which has great music, the largest urban bat colony in the U.S., and transvestite homeless guys on 6th street. You could stop in New Braunfels on the way to Austin and go to Schlitterbahn, which is consistently rated as one of the world's best waterparks. Or you could go southeast to Galveston or South Padre Island, which are supposed to be lots of drunken fun. Plus, San Antonio would probably be cheaper than San Diego. It's easy to get around San Antonio and the weather is usually nice and warm.

I'm going to San Diego next month for APhA2008, though, and I think that it will be a fun trip!

south america...avoid europe right now, exchange rate kills.

guess being from so cal...i dunno, i wouldn't vacation here. hard to get around w/out a car, and even if you have one, be prepared to fight traffic.

Go to mexico? cabo? cancun? my friends shoot off guns and go on ATV's when in cabo.

If you need recs for Mexico City let me know...I lived there for 6 years.

San Diego's another great choice...only city in Cali I'd consider living in...because you don't feel like you're in California.

How about Costa Rica? Or do you have 30K miles on American? If so, they're having an incredible deal to Tahiti. I'm thinking about going in May.

It's just another thought, but... You might be able to set up an "interview" with a company that's willing to defray the airfare cost. The only problem that I can think of is that you would have to "interview" for a position that actually exists and that would limit your travel destinations. You know what they say though... it's better when it's free.

Here are a few job openings:
Target
Walgreens
random companies

We're having a record cold winter here in Toronto, but our spring comes fast. PM me if you end up coming here; I can recommend some places.

I agree about the awesomeness of our Pride celebrations; even if you're not gay, (and I'm not), the partying is for everybody. A couple of years ago, I left work after an especially stressful shift and decided to decompress by going for a walk through downtown. Long story short, I accidentally ended up marching in the **** Parade. Everybody was cool (and no, I didn't take my top off).

If I had money and some time off, I'd go to Cuba. My brother and his wife have been there lots o' times and one of my friends loves it there so much he's learning Spanish. Some friends went there recently and I vetted the prescription drugs they took with them for donation purposes; there's free health care but the embargo makes it difficult for Cubans to get medications. My friends were taking a whack of antibiotics (mainly newer, more expensive agents like respiratory fluoroquinolones), asthma inhalers and BP meds (calcium channel blockers and B-blockers mostly).

Better yet... invite yourself over to Epic or Old Timer's house; no seriously, if you visit Dallas or Philly, you might be able to hang out. Traveling alone can get a little boring, and they seem to be up for guests. You might have to eat a sub sandwich if you visit Old Timer or drive the golf cart if you hang out with Epic.

I know there's a Dave & Buster's in the Dallas area. I was going to go there with my aunt and cousin about ten years ago, but they wouldn't let minors in after a certain time(if I remember correctly). That's the only reason I even know what D&B's is.

Your Could Try Dallas, home of :

Dave & Buster's World Headquarters
2481 Manana Drive
Dallas, TX 75220
214-357-9588

Maybe you could pick up your grand prize there.....

But seriously, do Kona on the Big Island of Hawai'i.

It was 75-80 F here this past weekend, blue skies and sunny. Enough to convince you to come to San Diego?

Plus, there is a Dave and Busters maybe a 10 minutes drive from downtown. If you decide to do something outdoorsy (aside from planting yourself on the beach🙂), now is a good time of the year to go whale watching.
You will have a great time if you come to SD, there's a million things to do.

Let me know if you need an inside scoop of where, when, how much etc.

Yeah +1 for san diego. Let me know if you go, I can direct you to a few good mexican food places. mmmmm....once you have some carne asada fries, you'll never want to leave here again. haha.

I got a month and some change to decide. Gimme some ideas folks....

A few cities pop in my head....Austin? San Diego? Lala land? Vegas? San Francisco? Toronto? Amsterdam? _________?
I vote for Lala Land! I hear they have more than one D&B!

I'll go to NYC next year when my cash barrel is filled more. I'm not down with spending $200/night for a crap hotel.

Check out biddingfortravel.com to get pretty hot deals on hotels! I'm not sure if you're familiar with the website, but they basically give you guidance on how low you can bid on priceline. I always get great deals that way when we travel!

btw, OT but have you decided where you're going to work after vacationing? (Not that I'm nosey or anything! 😀 Just curious :meanie: )

Stay home and save your money you foo...

unrelated.. I'll be in Orange County then in San Diego in less than 2 weeks. I will golf a lot. Then I'll write and tell you all about it.

Who wants to take me out to In and Out??
