I have been following this company for a bit and it seems the media have labeled the company and its Wunderkind CEO some marvel of modern medicine. The founder/CEO has a charming story about dropping out of Stanford and using her college money to found the company.

Now when delving deeper , just what is this company offering that hasn't been around for over a decade? Seriously, their claim is to be able to analyze a drop of blood and give accurate lab results. I am sorry but I have been using that technology for years, it's called and iStat. The only novel clinical test they have FDA approval for is a new test for HSV1, which frankly doesn't really mean much for the world at large. Now tell me again why this CEO is a tech billionaire? Seriously I want to see something amazing here because so far I can't find it. I see an over-valued company and overhyped technology.

When Theranos has an IPO, I'm investing at least $250k.

Seriously, why? It's overhyped technology that offers nothing new if you do your homework on the company. Maybe short their stock, but holding it?

When Theranos has an IPO, I'm investing at least $250k.

In general buying a stock on IPO day is a terrible investment. They are priced to make money for the bank and the private sellers. Good company or bad, the question is always how much you pay before determining if it's a great investment idea. Theranos could be the best company in the world and still be a bad investment idea if it's IPO is priced too high.

So what's funny is that they claim these tests can be done with a drop of blood but 25% of their testing is done with standard venipuncture and blood draws. I still don't buy the hype. Why aren't Siemens, bard, quest and these companies tanking or acting to buy the new technogy before it destroys their business?

Interesting links, PainDrain, I likewise have seen this wunderkind CEO touted all over the place in the media. Just shows you gotta do your own research (as you've clearly done).

Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes responds to a Wall Street Journal article that alleged the company's success in blood test technology may be misleading.

Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes responds to a Wall Street Journal article that alleged the company's success in blood test technology may be misleading.

And her response was......???

Members don't see this ad :)
Yes I read her response. Let me paraphrase: "trust me because I am so revolutionary and my ideas are so powerful that people hate me but I must shrowd my ideas in secret so people won't steal them."

She has to learn that if people are going to trust her then show the results. Not some bull**** She had hundreds of millions at her disposal. Run the studies, publish the results.

There are several who have seriously questioned her company and we aren't talking hacks and people with an ax to grind.

"Here's why Google Ventures didn't invest in Theranos"

"Maris tells Business Insider that his firm decided to pass on investing in Theranos in 2013 — because it had questions about the company's technology.

"We looked at it a couple times, but there was so much hand-waving — like, Look over here! — that we couldn't figure it out," Maris tells Business Insider. "So, we just had someone from our life-science investment team go into Walgreens and take the test. And it wasn't that difficult for anyone to determine that things may not be what they seem here."

That employee found that when he went to get a test done, Theranos wanted more than just a drop of blood in one of its "nanotainers." He denied a full venous blood draw, and ended up getting called back a week later because they wanted him to give more blood."

This company is a fraud until proven otherwise. I hope that someone demands to know the truth so this BS of investing massive amounts of money on bogus tech doesn't continue. I would also venture to guess that the darling CEO Ms. Holmes will be exposed for what she is, a good used car salesman at best.

Another example of fraud in the healthcare sector would be Martin Shkreli. Before he made a name for himself as a complete D-bag who bumped the price of a cheap toxoplasmosis drug by 7000%, he founded a drug company specializing in orphan drugs for rare disease. That company ousted him because of shady behavior and he then founded his most recent venture. Shkreli was a hedge fund manager prior to going into venture capital. He was being sued by several parties for bad behavior from his hedge fund days. Now the Feds are looking into an elaborate scheme where Shkreli used loans and stock transfers from his new drug company to pay off investors who were suing him from his former hedge fund. If the Feds can prove their case then it amounts to fraud and will be his downfall.

Saw that. No IPO anyway.

This kind of thing is why I won't ever put a large amount into a single stock, regardless of my feelings towards it or my pre-conceived knowledge on the topic. Boring Vanguard index funds are fine for me. I'll get rich slow.

But, if you want to buy a few stocks of the largest companies in the USA (true blue chip names, largest 100 companies) and hold until death that would work also as party of your investing philosophy. Even in healthcare I own mostly ETFs and just a few blue chips. For small company stocks I prefer ETFs and Mutual Funds (foreign).

I do own a few "lottery ticket" stocks but those don't even amount to $20,000 total of my portfolio.

I have been following the hype behind this company for the past few years and it is nothing but smoke and mirrors. Their tech is completely bogus and will likely never get to market. I think the rich investors and VC guys who bought into this company will likely be going after them in court soon enough.
