What's the story with the thesis requirement at the University of Michigan Medical School? I can't find jack about this requirement on the website. At my interview the Dean just mentioned it in passing.
the bottom line is that we don't really know what the thesis requirement entails. over 60% of the class each year does research over the summer after m1, so for most of us, it's really a moot issue. also, the thesis is wide in scope, so i think (i'm not sure) if you do some clinical experience thing, like shadowing, instead of research, you can maybe write something up about that experience and have it count towards the requirement. also, during the 4th year, you have the option of doing a "research rotation" i think, for a few months maybe... so you can get that taken care of then. i really don't think it will be a big deal at all, but then again, i don't know for sure. in any case, i don't think this kind of thing should be a deal-breaker for anyone. many schools are instituting similar requirements... duke/yale/stanford/etc. these schools are "research schools", after all.
