Thiazides and Renal Artery Stenosis?

Should the use of thiazides be avoided in patients with renal artery stenosis? I am finding conflicting information on the subject. It was my belief that diuretics are (in general) considered to be the first-line of defense for secondary hypertension. Is there a better drug choice for this condition?

Thiazides are generally 1st line for HTN according to JNC-7 guidelines, but you must take into account hepatic and renal function. What is the patients Cl? Remember that in Renal artery stenosis ACEI and ARBs are contraindicated. There are other options avail. I believe alpha antagonists can be used.
