My friend told me in order to be a dentist, you need to have good hand dexterity. So if my hand shakes when I try to cut soap (which he suggests), I should forget about it. So, I am wondering are there anything that I can do at home to test my dexterity?? Should I just give up dentistry if my hand shakes when I work with small things?? Is hand dexterity something that's trainable?

Thanks!

well if your hand shakes a lot, then ya, that is not a good sign....but if you are just an average person who has average hands, I think manual dexterity is something that you learn in dental school.....

dentistry is just like anything else you use with your hands.....just practice and practice, and you will become a pro....just like learning a guitar....

Sewing (with your hands of course, not machine) is a great way to improve on your dexterity!

What is so special about cutting soap to test your manual dexterity? Is this a common test I am unaware of? Thanks to those that reply.

Take up fishing. More specifically, fly fishing. Then, learn how to tie flies. You'll develop great manual dexterity in no time at all.

play console video games to improve finger dexterity.

Pick your nose 😀

Take art class, sculpture.

When where I pick my nose, I always end up bleeding because I stick myself with my fingernail. Can I become a dentist if I can not pick my nose? 😕

Seriously, shaking could have resulted from being nervous. Where you caving soap in front of others, for a test, or to just try it out. I remember I did a wax carving of a tooth at LLU summer program orientation for pre-dents and I shook a little at first but calm down when I saw others horrific work.

😴 Great way to practice.

Get some chaulk. Carve the statue of liberty. If the chaulk breaks you lose. Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars.

That's the way the DAT used to be in the 70's... I think it all just comes with practice... Maybe painting by numbers, wood carving, or playing an inst. might help?

Hey,

Adequate skills will come with (years of) practice for the average person. When your hand shakes is it resting on something or just floating? I know some who have hands that tremor but it isn't a problem once they have their working hand resting against a tooth or something stable. If this isn't the case consider consulting a physician about it to see if he/she can do something to help (I seem to recall individuals who told me they were prescribed meds such as propranolol to help control hand tremor).

Cheers

Soap Curving is one of the section in the Canadian DAT and it SUPPOSELY tests your manual dexterity. However, many people find this useless and a waste of time.
