I am a New Yorker... and Times Square at night still fascinates me 🙂 If you have some cash, try to see a Broadway show. You can see RENT for $20 by going to the theater 2 hours before showtime (by 6pm for an 8pm show) and entering your name into a lottery. They call about 30 names and if you're name is called, you get 2 tix for $20 each! (or 1 ticket if you put down that you only want 1.) These are front-row seats too. This is a great way to see an awesome show. Also you can try TKTS, which is a half-price ticket vendor in the middle of Times Square (46tth and Broadway.)

South Street Seaport may be fun - it's downtown by Wall Street so you can see Ground Zero down there and the Wall Street hustle and bustle too. You could go to Rockefeller Center and see a live taping of The Today Show. When are you traveling? I might have some other suggestions based on when it is.

PM me for restaurant suggestions and that type of thing if you need!

spend some time in central park....near shakespeare's garden....really nice area to just sit around for an afternoon and people watch...also...herald square area (34th street) has some nice shopping areas....what I would do is take a nice walk from times square on going uptown on fifth avenue to central park...nice window shopping along the way....and definitely see a play...I recommend Phantom of the Opera....get it through TKTS....I got front row seats for $40.....and if you're applying to NYU...then go to Greenwich village and get an idea of where you may be doing a lot of studying down in Bobst Library.....

go see dave letterman.

go watch the yanks lose, hahahahhahaahha

If you want to check out the Statue of Liberty without wasting most of your day, go on the Staten Island Ferry round trip. It starts in Battery Park, is cheap, and it takes you right by the island. You can get some good views of the statue, as well as the Manhatten skyline. Ofcourse it doesn't stop so you won't be able to get on the island, but that looked like it wasn't worthwhile to me anyways.
This tip is about 12 years old so if something has changed, hopefully someone will correct me.

5 days in Manhattan gives you plenty of time to see lots. Enjoy the feel of the city. Head uptown and take it all in. Visit the American Musuem of Natural History (pretty cool stuff and a cheap ticket to get in, you could spend 4-5 hours easy there). Relax in central park. Enjoy midtown and Times Square. See the Empire State Building. Catch a Broadway show. Walk around SoHo and Tribeca. Go to Magnolia Bakery, as was mentioned. Head downtown and see Wall Street, Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty.

You should take some time to plan it out, and remember that there is more to NYC than Manhattan. The Bronx zoo is an awesome site. What a great interview trip!
