Just thought I'd start up a thread about computer usage about schools to help out incoming students w/ computer purchases. Just continue this thread w/ your school's name and some brief comments regarding computer usage.

Vanderbilt: Heavily-dependent on Microsoft/Windows-based computers/software, so I wouldn't recommend getting a Mac. A few classmates w/ macs couldn't dispaly the online powerpoint presentations correctly last year and I'm still not sure if the issues have been resolved. Email system based on an Outlook-like-web-interface that loses some functionality if u're not using Internet Explorer (i.e. some features are disabled if you're using Mozilla/Firefox). If you buy a computer AFTER class starts, you can get the financial aid office to reimburse you once u submit them a copy of the receipt.

Something like 95% of all computers run on Windows. Chances are, your professors and school develop course-related material using Windows software. Therefore, it would behoof people to get Windows-based desktops or laptops for school. Macs or Linux machines are not a good idea because of compatibility issues. My 0.02 cents.

I agree. Med students have more important things to do than become linux gurus.
