Hello again.

Well, I haven't taken the DAT just yet (this coming summer). I'm currently doing my own research in DNA from goats (gene isolation and concentration comparisons) and chemical breakdown of saturated fats into biofuels (and then turning the resulting glycerin into alcohol, etc.). I've done about 40 hours of shadowing with several dentists in a free children's clinic (and plan to do more this summer while studying for the DAT). My community service hours are low, around 50, most of which coincide with the previously mentioned children's clinic. I will boost those over the course of this year, in hospices, Missions of Mercy clinics, and various others. My GPA's a solid 3.71 (although I'm just taking Orgo now). I'm in Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Kappa Mu, Alpha Chi, departmental honors, and university honors. I was accepted to, and turned down, research last year in biodiesel production, but chose to take an internship instead (I switched majors from mech. engineering). I will be inducted into Phi Kappa Phi in the spring, and will be probably publishing my research later. For leadership, I'm treasurer of MANRRS (minorities in agriculture, although I'm not a minority) [Minority-centered university], I'm an 8-year Army veteran with multiple awards and commendations (as well as combat veteran).

Think I'm okay? Seriously, no sarcasm! I want to apply to a MED program at UNC this summer, or their Molecular Biology/Biotechnology program. But, I'm worried that it will interfere with studying for the DAT. Suggestions?

Thanks!

No sarcasm!!!

The problem is that it's really hard to avoid sarcasm. 🙂

Do okay on the DAT, and you'll be fine. Rock the DAT and it sounds like you'll have your pick of schools.

I'm not sure what these programs are, but if they interfere with studying for the DAT, you're better of trying to do them later. If you can do both at the same time, then go for it.

The only other thing is to do everything early. Get your LORs lined up, make sure they finish early, take DAT early, and submit early.

You could probably use a few more extra-curricular activities. Besides that you should squeak by.

No sarcasm!? Well, that limits what I can say.

Get a 19 DAT and you'll be good, 20 would almost guarantee that you get in somewhere.

And... wait, no sarcasm... never mind.

How can you not expect sarcasm? You must already have zero spare time with all that crap- there's no way you could do more, let alone think you need to do more. Quit braggin and kill the DAT and of course you'll be golden.

Thanks. It kills me to see people with 2000+ community service hours on pre-dents.

My question is, then, should I apply for a MED program or accept another research opportunity this summer while I'm studying for the DAT. I've never had to turn down these type of things, and never wanted to. There's a guy beating my door down, trying to get me to work on gene isolation in his goats. And, another student has offered an opportunity to work with UNC Dental on oligodontia gene studies. It's too good to be true, and I have no idea what to do. My time has gotten so limited that I only really eat about one meal a day. On the plus side, being so busy has made me nicer, somehow.

I'm being told that I'd be a shoe-in for the MED program, but I don't know. I don't want to apply if I won't have the time. The acceptance rate after the program is simply outstanding, however.
My gut's telling me to work on oligodontia, but I'm pretty sure I need to make a move on this fast. Before the invitation is withdrawn.

Back to alkenes!

Oooookay,
Nevermind. I need to pay closer attention. Apparently I'm freaking out a little.

Do schools notice that you have research pending? Say, if I nuke the DAT in the early summer, and apply before I am published?
