I'm going to summer school, and I have an agreement with my parents to get a job while I go. I also plan on starting hospital/clinical volunteering this summer also. Now, I'm pretty sure I'll be spread really thin this summer trying to balance a part-time job, volunteering, and school.

Has anyone done anything like this before? If so, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm actually kind of excited about it, it gives me a lot of responsibility and prepares me for the 'real world' in a sense. I'll have my car finally and that will make things a lot easier.

Yes. Make sure you schedule things out well. I use a little desk calendar and that thing saves my life all the time. You should be fine if you organize yourself properly. Good luck!

Thanks! Are u currently doing this? If so what's your job if you don't mind sharing.

Your situation is quite common, and surprisingly manageable. You'd be surprised how time flies when you're out on your own and free of distractions.

Wow bro, those of us that worked full time, went through college, did ECs, and got accepted to medical school are terribly impressed with the possibility that you might get a part time job.

Alright, go easy on him... I don't think his intention was to brag, it was an honest question.

Yeah, but you would expect someone in college to have a little more maturity. He has almost 90 posts, so he's been around here long enough to glean this kind of information. I imagine he goes to school with people working full time as well.

don't skimp on sleep. things go a lot smoother if you make sleep a priority.

It's not terrible to manage, depending on your class, job, other ECs. For example last summer I took Bio I/II. Required to be in class 9-4 Mon - Thurs, Friday just 9-12. 4-6 read the chapter for the next day. Friday during when the lab hours normally would be, get some volunteering in instead. 6pm on during the weekdays I could spend with my gf/friends or just have some downtime. I worked 12 hours shifts Sat and Sun, giving a decent enough paycheck.

Easily could have fit more in. Find something that works for you and it will not be a problem. I didn't include commuting into that so that was an extra 1 1/2 hours but really no big deal. The biggest problem was just being in class from 9-4 was very tiresome even though I didn't do anything.

Good luck!

I realize that your parents probably worked very hard to put you in a comfortable situation of going to college, studying hard, having a car, health insurance, etc. In addition, this is the life that you have known, so by no means is this any of your doing. However, having a part-time job hardly qualifies for "real world" experience. Furthermore, it may be unwise in future social situations/interview situations to advertise your relative position of societal maturity. Just sayin...

No, no one has ever worked while going to school before. You're really off the edge of the map now... 🙄

Calm down, I was just looking for some additional advice. Sorry if I offended you. I don't want a medal for getting a part-time job, it's just I've never had a real job before, the one I'll get this summer is going to be my first one. And it's funny you mention "maturity." You have no idea what I've been through, and how "mature" I am. I should be the one questioning your maturity, going after someone on an internet message board. What a shame, a guy can't even ask a question without being shat on by a condescending jerk on the internet.

Welcome to the internet.

I never took summer classes during college, but I did often juggle internships, research work, volunteering, and part-time jobs during my summers.

My advice would be to try to find a job where you can work during the evenings - this will make sure that your work schedule and your class schedule don't overlap, and it will allow you to volunteer at a hospital during weekday time-slots, which are often easier to come by.

These jobs are often things like working as a server, cocktail server, bouncer, bartender (age requirements for these vary by state), retail clerk, art/theatre assistant, etc. The hours are long, and the customers can be brutal but you'll learn a good deal about working with people. The money can also be quite good for some of these jobs - when I used to cocktail waitress, I would easily make $200/hour.

However, if this is your first job, many places are likely to turn you down because you lack work experience, and you will have to take what you can get. Apply anywhere you can (start applying at least a month before you want to begin working), and take the best job you are offered - even if it only pays minimum wage.
