Third Timers!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You know BlackKAT this might be a really good idea. Anyone bored and want to read my PS????????? 😉

I had a variety of people read (2 vets...an M.D....family) but I think maybe since they "know" me they transposed that into the essay instead of thinking that these admissions people are going to read it without having ever met me first. SO I am afraid it doesn't convey an image of myself. Maybe it might be nice to get some people's opinions that have NEVER met me! Plus I think I am ignorant as to WHAT people write in their PS...Creativity probably is not my strong suit!

I'll read it. I dont have time for major edits but I can give general feedback about how to make it better or what you can change. PM me and i'll give you my email!

I'll read it, and if you want I will send mine as well so you can get an idea of what other people do write? Like BlacKAT I probably won't do much major proofreading/editing but it might be good to have multiple opinions on the big idea...

Ditto to reading your PS, and I'd be happy to swap mine and let you see what I wrote as well.

I think the biggest piece of advice I can give (with or without reading your PS) is to think of 2-4 things that you definitely want the ad coms to know about you. Then when people read your PS ask if they picked up on those 2-4 things in your essay. This also helped me get a lot of constructive comments on how to make those things stand out even more and cut out some of the fluff.

Shoot it this way and I'll read/edit it.

I will be a fourth timer next year. . . All you third timers that offered to read the PS, would you care to critique another?? Nyanko, I feel like my sitiuation is very similar to yours, congrats to you all on making it in!! I am hoping this next app cycle will be my last.

sure PM me

edit: wait im confused, did you want only third timers to read it? anyway, id be happy to!

I'd be more than happy to read anyone's PS and give some feedback! You can also read mine as well if you'd like. Anyone can PM me and I'll give you my email address! Oh and i'm not a third timer (1st actually yay!) but it couldn't hurt!

Man, I want help with my PS but I won't be able to really rewrite it until after I've done some more stuff this summer (not that I'll change it completely). By then time I'm ready, you'll all be started with your first years and you'll be busy as heck!

Ditto that. I'm totally bored and have no life anyhoo.

twelvetigers....I promise to you I will read your ps whenever you want. As long as you give me some notice!

plenty of first years took time out to help me with mine...even reading it multiple times until we were satisfied with it. i really appreciate the help i received (especially from the UC Davis 2013ers...so helpful!) so i'll definitely be willing to put in some time helping others with personal statements this fall!

I promise I'll help you!
And for some strange reason I disappear off of here, you can hunt me down and kick in my door :-D

We start relatively late (Sept. 1) so I'm sure I will be able to help out this year! That is, if I'm not beating myself over my head with writing my thesis all summer.

Moderators, it's not often that I suggest we imitate the pre-allos, but they have a sticky for each application period that is dedicated to PS readers. I think it should be specified that it's for regulars only - like 10+ posts or something - but it might be worth a shot.

I'll read yours! Just give me like, 4 weeks notice and I'll try to pencil you in 😀

Or just whenever. Doesn't take too long to read a PS.

Oh, CSU. Dear, dear CSU! We love you but you frustrate us so! I'm sorry TurquoiseWolves... I feel your pain and frustration. I will be a third time applicant there this year as well. Maybe this will be our year!

I don't really have any advice (since I apparently can't please them either), but I do know that they seem to really love upper level 'ologies. I work with 2 other people who were also rejected from there (our clinic was 0 for 3 this year🙁) and lack of upper level bio classes was mentioned to both of them (and me last year... but I took more in the last year so she said I was good there now... but of course I still feel like I need more, with basically no way to get them.).

I don't know if there is any truth to the not going to undergrad in the state being a problem, but I didn't either so I hope it isn't! Regardless, that simply can't be changed so I refuse to worry about it! I will of course worry about everything else.

So sorry to not have more advice, but just thought I'd let you know I am in a similar boat! We can do this! And if it cheers you any (??), I am turning 34 shortly so to me it sounds like you are ahead of the game at 26!

P.S. I hope I can take some of you up on the PS offer too😳. I was told my PS was "good" at the file review, but I wish I had asked for more specifics about it! Not sure if I am going to do a total rewrite, or if I will just edit/modify the one I have. But come summer either way, I'd love to get some more input!

P.P.S My VMSAR book came in the mail today (I ordered a new one just for the heck of it I guess), so does this mean it is time to get serious about my list of schools? ACK!

THANKS gone2dogs for the encouragement. You definately aren't alone....I'm thinking this year is our year 😉

I don't suppose any of those upper-division -ology courses were "online" were they????????

I wish I could find more! I took Histology through CSU and genetics (through Berkeley extension) and now animal nutrition (kansas), but otherwise I haven't found much online. I was considering Immunology though Berkeley, but I haven't read much good about it on SDN (searched all forums and found some people who took it) and it really sounds like it would make me miserable. There is an upper division animal anatamy class in the fall also through CSU that was reccommended... still considering it myself, even though I know CSU won't see the grade. I think either metro state or CU Denver has a cell biology type class online... but I don't think they offer it in the summer and I would have to go search again for it.

Sorry I don't know of more, but if you find any, let me know!

I've heard good things and bad things about their classes, but might be worth looking into.

Online Pharmacology, offered over the summer: http://continuinged.uml.edu/online/Current_Semsearch_detail.cfm?coursenum=34.501&secnum=-061

Other UmassONLINE classes: http://www.umassonline.net/CourseBrowse.cfm

And this one was my Plan B: Online Medical terminology, animal behavior, pathophysiology, marine biology, epidemiology, immunology, pathogenic microbiology, essentials of pharmacology, pharmacology, etc: http://catalog.sln.suny.edu/content.php?catoid=7&navoid=54

Also there are:
Veterinary Science
• VETM 330-IN1 - Veterinary Client Relations • VTS 111-S20 - Veterinary Medical Terminology

😍 Be careful, some of them are offered through community colleges, are only 1 credit, or are lower level, so just make sure they'll do what you want them to 🙂
If looking at big "ologies" see if any are through Stonybrook University--very highly respected med school there, so a great science program.

Also, Turquoise, check your email!

I second TT on making a sticky for PS readers. I would, fyi, be happy to read anyone's PS. Also, I'm quite sure there were several threads from last year with links to several peoples PS's that helped me out A LOT!

You can put me in the PS reader category as well. Think it'd be too early to start a thread? I don't know when everyone starts on their applications. I'm a 'last minute' kinda guy myself lol.

I've already reviewed a couple of personal statements, and I must admit...it's kind of fun! Keep them coming haha
