One of the schools I'm very interested in doesn't allow third year away rotations (only fourth year). Is this common? I thought that one of the reasons for away rotations in third year was to scope out residency programs, and that it'd be too late to do this in fourth year. Am I mistaken?

I believe most US MD schools with affiliated hospitals require their students to do their core rotations (medicine, surgery, ob/gyn etc.) at those sites. Then in your 4th year you can choose do aways where you'd like.

I think it's better this way, because you'll be much more prepared to show yourself off to potential residency programs during your aways after having done your core rotations at your home institution.

However, I think this differs for DO and Carribean schools, as many of them do not have affliated hospital for their students to rotate through. Thus, their students are forced to do there core rotations away.
