So I was browsing the web and came across this gem,

http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/testimony-continues-sumter-co-double-murder-trial/nD2qx/

Here is what bothers me - The defendant, was removed from a mental health facility (previously sentenced to a 75-year commitment in a psychiatric hospital for animal cruelty for killing three dogs and three pet rabbits) to face these charges. He has was declared competent (x2) to stand trial and decided to defend himself (and subsequently was found guilty and sentenced to death).

I'm no psychiatrist but this dude has a prima facie appearance of schizoaffective / manic, grandiose delusions. While in the de jure sense perhaps he is competent, but I question if this is because of his destructive/irresponsible behaviour in representing himself/his courtroom behavior (see video)...

Idk. What do you all think... This just bothers me.

Competency is a fluid thing. There are standards that must be met in the state of Florida both for representing oneself, and for competency to stand trial. The standards themselves are different. If the questions of competency is again raised, he is again sent back for more treatment, if the judge agrees with the evaluator's opinions.

As Scalia famously said, "While there is little doubt that preserving individual dignity (to which the Court refers) is paramount," he wrote, "there is equally little doubt that the loss of dignity the right [of self-representation] is designed to prevent is not the defendant's making a fool of himself by presenting an amateurish or even incoherent defense. Rather, the dignity at issue is the supreme human dignity of being master of one's fate rather than a ward of the State—the dignity of individual choice."

At first I thought you meant he was sentenced to death for killing the dogs and rabbits, which was cool.
